The Redstone Coke Ovens are an important historic feature in Pitkin County. The Redstone Beehive Coke Ovens are located within the West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway, on State Highway 133 at the entrance to Redstone. The Coke Ovens are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As an important landmark, they are designated as the Redstone Coke Oven Historic District 5PT451. The town of Redstone, including the Redstone Inn, Cleveholm Manor (the historic 'Redstone Castle), and many homes in the town and along Redstone Boulevard, are also listed in the National Register and are recognized as valuable assets in the preservation of Colorado's history. The Redstone Historical Society, the Pitkin County Open Space and Trails Commission, and the Colorado State Historical Society all worked together to obtain grants and funding to purchase the coke oven site. This initiative took place to protect the site from demolition or development; however, the ovens themselves need restoration work to prevent further deterioration. This grant would present that opportunity. The Pitkin County Historic Preservation Officer, Redstone Historical Society, and Colorado Preservation Inc. will work together to ensure the most sensitive preservation of the coke ovens. These entities bring many years of historic preservation experience to the project. The project will follow the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Rehabilitation. After the project, the property will remain in the ownership of Pitkin County. Operations will consist of annual monitoring of the structural integrity of the coke ovens and vegetation management of the site. The facility will be used to educate the public about the history of the area and the importance of the coke ovens to the community of Redstone, the Crystal River Valley, and the nation's coal mining and railroad era history. This project will protect and enhance an important feature of the byway, will preserve the historic nature of the site, and will protect the archaeological integrity of the historic coke ovens. The town of Redstone and the mining site of Coal Basin are adjacent to the Coke Ovens. This site is one of the many highlights for visitors and motorists while enjoying the scenic byway and the Crystal River Valley. Thank you for your serious consideration of this grant request. These structures were listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1990. Our support is based on the premise that this project will provide much needed funding for stabilization of 76 existing Coke Ovens and allow 4 Coke Ovens to be restored to their original working condition. Pitkin County Open Space & Trails provided partial funding for the acquisition of the Historic Redstone Coke Ovens in 2004 in order to preserve and place the site into public ownership. The Redstone Coke Ovens have architectural significance; a grant furnished in 1995 by the Colorado Historical Society provided funding for an archeological stabilization assessment. Currently there is no designated funding source for this type of restoration project thus a C -DOT Highway Enhancement Grant would allow preservation work to begin on these historic coke ovens. As every year goes by, it seems that a few more bricks are dislodged, and the ovens degrade a little further on the way to ultimate ruin. The ovens are such an unusual and interested artifact of our past, that I hope a program of stabilization and restoration can be undertaken. And, if a few of the ovens could be restored to their original condition, then the program would be a great benefit to the public, particularly if a placard were erected which told how the ovens worked and described how they changed coal to coke, and the resulting advantages. Thank you for your consideration. 3 di / y Thai( Redstone Historical Society May 16.2006 Trustees Jim Lewis Pitkin County Land Management Ron Sorter 76 Service Center Road Presi0enr Tel. 983-1767 Aspen, CO 81611 sorters @,of oat Michelle Sorter Dear Mr. Lewis: V Ann Martin Our organization wholeheartedly supports your efforts in obtaining grant funding to help fleas Dick Simpson stabilize and restore the Redstone Coke Ovens. We think there isn't a project that could secr display more vividly the impact transportation has had on this area. Barb Albin Jeff Bier The town of Redstone was built to house the men (and their families) who fired these Bev Goss ovens. Here, the finest deposits of metallurgical coal in the West were brought down by Sue McEvoy narrow gauge from Coalbasin to be coked, then shipped to CF &I in Pueblo to be Dwell Munsell Nar_ry transformed into the steel that built the new America. Present -day state highway 133 lies right atop (and shares its centerline) with the original Crystal River railway, whose rails were removed in World War II to help build howitzer and shell. Those rails were made from steel smelted using the coke from these ovens. First, a wagon road, and then a railway, now a highway, running right by the ovens. We're convinced its travelers would benefit from stopping there and being able to really grasp the human effort expended through that span of time. Our organization has received assurances from the last owners of this property (a coal mining concern) that they would donate to us examples of the original coking tarry cars, rails, and other historic machinery to help complete the display of the few ovens you intend to restore fully to their 1903 vestments. We will assist you in every way possible. Thank you for your efforts on behalf of this tiny but proud little village. Best Regards, Rpn Sorter 0520 Redman Boulevard Redstone. The proposed project is located on the West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway and would be a strung candidate for funding under the TE category of "Scenic Byways." The Redstone Beehive Coke Ovens are an important landmark along the byway and have been a popular interpretive stop for a number of years.
