Septic permit approved per compliance with the engineer design and specifications dated November 4, 2003.
Any changes must be approved by this department and the design engineer prior to them being made.
Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the Pitkin

DOME =III
As requested by Nancy MacKenzie of PCEHD, we have prepared a corrected installation observation for
the subject site. The installation was observed on November 18, 2003 and July 6, 2004. The system was
designed under our Job No. 15405.02, last revised November 4, 2003.
The system includes the installation of a 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with
a pump in a Biotubeg pump vault and a gravelless chamber -trench drain field. The drain field was installed
in two trenches, each with one row of 10 chambers for a total of 20 chambers and 310 ft2 of infiltrative
area. A concrete distribution box was installed to distribute effluent to the drain field. A corrected as -built
drawing is included as Figure 1.
The components of the OWS design were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications. Final
electrical connections must be made by a licensed electrician. The construction foreman may activate the
pumping system at his discretion.
If there are questions or if we may be of further service, please call.

Subject: Subsurface Investigation and Revised OWS Design, Proposed Cabin
Beaver Ponds at Lost Basin Ranch, Bane Tract 1
Pitkin County, Colorado
Job No. 15405.02W
Mr. Kaufman,
As requested, we have investigated subsurface conditions at the subject site and designed a revised
onsite wastewater system (OWS) for the proposed cabin. The revisions are based on a new location
for the proposed drain field from our previous report dated May 15, 2003, under Job No. 15405W.
All previous reports should be discarded to avoid confusion. Our firm investigated subsurface
conditions on October 22, 2003.
SITE CONDITIONS
The property is located in a rural area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain
field area has a 25% slope to the northwest, and has a moderate cover of native grasses and aspen
trees. The residence will be served water by an onsite well located more than 100 feet to the west of
the proposed drain field area.
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
The proposed cabin will have two bedrooms and a total living area of less than 2000 square feet (SF).
The OWS design was based on 2 bedrooms and 300 gallons per day (GPD) using Pitkin County
Environmental Health Department (PCEHD) loading of 75 gallons per day per person. The sewage
loading with a peak factor of 1.75 is 525 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and a
garbage grinder.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
A subsurface investigation was performed by digging one profile pit and three percolation holes, 33
to 41 inches deep, at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface materials encountered in the
profile pit consisted of 1 foot of sandy topsoil, underlain by sandy clay with angular rock fragments
to 2 feet, underlain by sandy clay to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. Ground water was not
encountered. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 10 minutes per inch (MPI) to 20 MPI. The
average percolation rate is 17 MPI. Percolation test results are included as Table 1.

Page 2
RECOMMENDATIONS
The proposed OWS includes the installation of a septic tank, an effluent pump, and a gravelless
chamber -trench drain field, at the locations presented on Figure 2. The OWS design is based on an
average sewage load of 300 GPD, a percolation rate of 17 MPI. The installation includes one 1000 -
gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with a pump in a BiotubeTM pump vault in the
second compartment and two chamber -trenches, each with 1 row of 10 chambers. A pump with a
total flow rate of 30 gallons per minute and total dynamic head of 25.7 feet is required to transport
effluent to the drain field. Pump specifications are included as Figure 5. A flow splitter basin, or
equivalent device, is required to distribute effluent to the field.
Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to
minimize compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick,
shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers.
The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix should be
sown at the drain field to re -vegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and may
develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the
field.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of,
and assume responsibility for, ongoing maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring
program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years or more frequently if needed. Effluent
filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping or as needed. There are
daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other non -biodegradable materials into the septic
system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized to reduce the frequency of pumping. Water use
must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a
running toilet can use in excess of 1000 GPD. An additional 1000 GPD loading may flood and
irreparably harm the system.
We caution against the installation of a water softener. The hydraulic loading from the backwash of a
water softener is detrimental to an OWS and a separate drywell should be constructed for the
backwash waste, if a softener is installed. No landscaping or plastic can be used over the field, which
will reduce performance of the field. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should
not be introduced to the OWS. The design of the OWS is based on the treatment of domestic sewage
only. No industrial or hazardous wastes should be introduced into the OWS.
LEMTATIONS
A contractor who is experienced in its installation must install an OWS design. Our investigation,
layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different
from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the change on
the proposed OWS. If the health department modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate
the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon
completion of the OWS

All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial
requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report,
are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have
demonstrated knowledge of the PCEHD ISDS regulations and requirements.
If there are questions, please call. The project engineer for this site is Tim Petz.

The purpose of this fetter is to document the successM completion of the 'Cabin Well' located on
Lost Basin Ranch neer Carbondale. Colorado. Based Upon nkm%t!On that we have revkwred, it
appears that the vies con reliably support the conternplefed development of two residential cabins
to be constructed on Tracts 1 and 5 of the Ranch. A brief summary of the weds CtarachmistI S is
outlined below -
The Cabtn Wed was constructed by the Sheiton Drilling Company on April 29, 2002 under wen

Subject: Installation Observation, Proposed Cabin
Beaver Ponds at Two Shoes Ranch (formerly Lost Basin Ranch), Bane Tract 1
Pitkin County, Colorado
Job No. 15405.02W
Mr. Kauffman,
As requested, we observed the installation of the onsite wastewater system for the subject site on
November 18, 2003 and July 6, 2004. The system was designed under our Job No. 15405.02, last revised
November 4, 2003.
The system includes the installation of a 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with
a pump in a Biotube® pump vault and a gravelless chamber -trench drain field. The drain field was installed
in two trenches, each with one row of 10 chambers for a total of 20 chambers and310 ft2 of infiltrative
area. A concrete distribution box was installed to distribute effluent to the drain field. An as -built drawing
is included as Figure 1.
The components of the OWS design were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications. Final
electrical connections must be made by a licensed electrician. The construction foreman may activate the
pumping system at his discretion.
If there are questions or if we may be of further service, please call.
Sincerely,
