Re: Pitkin County Airport Master Plan
Dear BOCC:
Last year at this time, Cliff Runge and I submitted a formal proposal to
Pitkin County for the development of a Smaller Carbon Neutral Second FBO on
Lot 2, which was requested to be located on the East Side of the Airport. We
were subsequently informed by Airport Administration that no decisions about
future development on the Airport were going to be made until the completion of
the Update to the Airport Master Plan. Cliff and I looked forward to this planning
process and the opportunity to present our proposal to the County and the Airport
Master Planning Committee ( "Planning Committee ").
Unfortunately, and despite repeated requests, our proposal has neither
been debated or offered as a development alternative to the Planning Committee
during this last year of meetings; nor have we been given the opportunity to
present our proposal to the Planning Committee. On November 7th, the
Planning Committee is scheduled to select a couple of development alternatives
for consideration by the County Commissioners. Our proposal to offset 100% of
General Aviation fuel sold by our FBO, and investing over $10 million dollars in
renewable energy development over the next decade, cannot possibly be one of
the proposals recommended by the Planning Committee, since it has never been
recognized as one of the potential alternatives.
We understand that the Airport Administration does not wish to place
the Commissioners in the public position of choosing between developing tens of
thousands of square feet of hangar space for individuals whose sole agenda is to
have a hanger for their Gulfstreams or the potential for the development of tens
of thousands of square feet solar panels, hydro - electric plants or wind farms.
However, our proposal will demonstrate the viability and profitability of a Carbon
Neutral FBO that could be copied industry wide, is more involved than just the
location of a few buildings on a map, and is not going to just die a death by
committee. We want to make every effort to be heard and given a fair chance.
Mr. Runge and I have over 50 years of combined FBO experience in
Aspen and Rifle, and despite Airport Administration doubts, we can make our
proposed operation a smooth and integral part of the Airport; putting Pitkin
County in the forefront of getting serious about our ever increasing carbon
footprint. We look forward to presenting our full proposal to the Commissioners
and the Planning Committee in the near future.
