I did call isabel calderon yesterday and thought that Steve Howard had already approved this cedar shake material for the roofing. After receiving your email and reviewing the material again, I see that Steve only approved the barn to be of this type of roofing material. Therefore, I would concur that the house would not be allowed to use this class "B" cedar shake material that was used on the barn. It needs to be constructed of metal or class "A" non combustible material. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. To be further described as Parcel "B ", as shown on the plat of Shelly Burke, recorded January 27, 1999, in Plat Book 48, Page 42. The existing 1041 Approval, Resolution #97-41 in paragraph 14 -b- (1) calls for "roof construction to be metal or class "A ", non- combustible (no wood shake /shingles) material with no flat roofs." The applicant is requesting to be allowed to use wood shakes with additional fire protection measures, and eliminate the prohibition on the use of wood shake /shingles. This is very confusing to anyone in the construction industry, as there are Class "A" materials, and there are non - combustible materials. There is no such thing as Class "A ", non - combustible. It is either or, not both. It is our intention to provide a Class "A" fire retarded shingle, with a 1 -hour fire rated assembly below the shingles. During the development of the construction documents for the barn /caretaker the architect, Mark Berthold, requested from the building department to add a layer of ' /2 ' fireproof gypsum board below cedar shakes. With the full roof assembly of 5/8" fireproof gyp bd., 2x12 Rafters, 3/4" plywood, '/2" fireproof gyp bd., this provides a 1 hour rated fire assembly. It was specified that the shakes be treated with "CHEMCO" Fire Retardant. This gives the shingles a Class "A" Fire Rating. This detail was reviewed and approved by the Aspen and Basalt Fire Protection District Marshals. Attached is a copy of the approved detail and back up testing information from several agencies demonstrating the Class "A" rating for the shakes. It was intended that the main residence would be of the same assembly. It was designed both structurally and architecturally with this in mind. It would only make sense that if a 1 hour roof construction with Class "A" shakes was approved for the barn that the same assembly would be acceptable on the main residence 100 ft away. The structures location on the site sets back from the top of a shallow bank coming up from the river and clear of existing trees and under growth. This vegetation will be thinned as specified in Section 14, Wildfire Mitigation Measures. The location to Snowmass Creek also provides an excellent water source for fire protection. In closing it seems to that the applicant has addressed the issues of concern for wildfire by providing a Class "A" shingle with a structural assembly with a fire rating of 1 hour. Reissued November 1, 1996 1.0 SUBJECT FTX Pressure - treated Wood Shakes and Shingles CEDAR-PLUS Pressure Treated Wood Shakes and Shingles 2.0 PROPERTY FOR WHICH EVALUATION IS SOUGHT - 2.1 Weather Resistance 2.2 Roofing Classification 3.0 DESCRIPTION FTX and CEDARPLUS pressure treated wood shakes and shingles shall be produced from No. 1 grade western red cedar shakes or shingles, complying with the applicable code. Shakes and shingles, having a maximum moisture content of 25 percent, are pressure treated with a proprietary fire - retardant chemical. The bundles shall be labeled as indicated in the Identification portion of this report. Installation shall comply with instructions described herein for the Class B and Class C roof coverings, except additional weather protective measures are necessary in areas subject to roof ice buildup and wind driven snow as required by the applicable code. 4.0 INSTALLATION 4.1 GENERAL Wood shakes or shingles shall be installed on minimum roof slopes of 4:12, except as described herein. When installed on minimum roof slopes of 3:12, an underlayment of not less than a listed Type 15 felt complying with ASTM D 226 shall be used and the installation shall be approved by the local building official having jurisdiction. The roof valley flashing shall be fabricated of not less than No. 28 gauge galvanized sheet corrosion resistant metal applied over an underlayment of not less than Type 15 felt. The metal shall extend at least 8 inches from the centerline each way for wood shingles and 11 inches from the centerline each way for wood shakes. The hip and ridge weather exposure shall not exceed those permitted for the field of the roof. 4.2 CLASS B ROOF COVERING 4.2.1 Shake Installation FTX and CEDARPLUS pressure treated western red cedar shakes are applied over a substrate of not less than 1/2 inch (limm) thick plywood with exterior glue which shall be installed in accordance with the applicable code. An underlayment of Type 30 complying with ASTryl D 226, 36 inch (914mm) wide asphalt saturated organic felt is installed under the 15 or 18 inch (381 or 457 mm) long starter course at the eave line. An 18 inch (457 mm) wide interlayment of Type 30 asphalt saturated organic felt is applied between shake courses in such a manner that no felt is exposed to the weather below the shake butts nor between the individual shakes. Shakes are laid with a minimum sidelap of 1 1/2 inches (38 mm) between joints in adjacent courses. Spacing between shakes shall not be less than 3/8 inch (10 mm) nor more than 5/8 inch (16 mm). Shakes shall be fastened to the sheathing with two hot dipped zinc coated nails positioned approximately 1 inch (25 mm) from each edge and approximately 2 inches (51 mm) above the exposure line. Nails shall be a minimum No. 13 gauge with a 7/32 inch (6 mm) head diameter and of sufficient length to penetrate 3/4 inch (19 mm) into the sheathing or through the thickness of the sheathing, whichever is leis. The starter course at the eave shall be doubled. Fifteen inch (381 mm) or 18 inch (457 mm) shakes are permitted to be used for the final course at the ridge. This report is limited to the specific product and data and test reports submitted by the applicant in its application requesting this report. No independent tests were performed by, the National Evaluation Service. Inc. (NES). and NES specifically does not make any warranty, either expressed or implied, as to any finding or other matter in this report or as to any product covered by this report. This disclaimer includes, but is not limited to, merchantability. This report is also subject to the limitation listed herein. 4.2.2 Shingle Installation FTX and CEDARPLUS pressure treated No. 1 grade western red cedar shingles shall be applied over a substrate of not less than 1/2 inch (13 mm) thick plywood with exterior glue. The pressure treated shingles shall be laid and fastened to the plywood decking as described for pressure treated wood shakes _in Section 4.2.1 of this report, except that underlayment and interlayment is permitted to be omitted. 4.3 CLASS C ORDINARY ROOF COVERING FTX and CEDARPLUS pressure treated shakes or shingles shall be installed as described for the Class B roof covering, except the substrate is permitted to be spaced sheathing complying with the applicable code. 5.0 IDENTIFICATION Bundles of treated wood shakes and shingles shall contain a label noting the shingle or shake grading agency and compliance with U.B.C. Standard No. 15 -3 or 15 -4. An additional label noting the pressure treater's name and address, the quality control agency's name, "FTX and CEDARPLUS Pressure Treated Shakes and Shingles ", the Class B or Class C rating and this NES report number, also shall be affixed to each bundle. (NER- QA214). 6.11 Chemco, Inc.'s Ferndale, Washington plant quality control manual for fire retardant pressure treated cedar shakes and shingles, Revised April, 1996. 7.0 CONDITIONS OF USE The National Evaluation Service Committee finds that FTX and CEDARPLUS pressure treated wood shake and shingle roof covering systems described in this report comply with or are alternatives to the 1996 BOCA National Building Code, 1994 Standard Building Code with 1996 Revisions, 1994 Uniform _Building Code, and the 1995 CABO One and Two Family Dwelling Code subject to the following conditions: 7.1 The treated wood shakes and shingles shall be installed in accordance with this report. 7.2 The wood shakes and shingles shall be pressure treated under a quality control program with inspections by Fire Tech Services, Inc. (NER- QA214). 7.3 The Type 30 asphalt saturated felt underlayment and interlayment shall be listed products. 7.4 This report is subject to re- examination on a periodic basis. For information on the current status of this report, contact one of the participating members of the NES. 7.5 Wind uplift is not within the scope of this report. The UL -790 10 Year Weatherin Test: The Standard In Determining Fire Resistance of Roof Covering Materials Test procedures to determine the fire resistance of roof coverings were originally developed by Underwriters Laboratories prior to 1920. The test standard (UL -790) has been amended over the years to reflect changes in roofing materials. The tests have also been adopted by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 256) American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM- E108), and Uniform Building Code (UBC 15 -2) The tests provide comparable fire resistance values among roofing materials. The tests are considered to be representative of fire conditions that originate outside of homes. All roofing products are subjected to three tests: Intermittent Flame Test Spread -of -Flame Test Burning -Brand Test With the introduction of fire retardant wood roofing materials, the tests were amended to include additional tests for wood products. These are: Flying -Brand Test Rain Test Weathering Test Intermittent Flame Test This test shows a roofing material's resistance to flames from adjacent burning material. The roofing materials are exposed to intermittent gas flames of 1,300 °F to 1,400 °F. A 12 miles per hour wind is applied to the test deck until the test is completed. Spread -of -Flame Test A spread -of -flame test is used to determine the fire resistance of most building materials. For roofing materials, the roof deck is exposed to a gas flame of 1,300 °F to 1,4007 for 4 to 10 minutes. A 12 miles per hour wind is applied to the test deck until the test is completed. Burning -Brand Test This test exposes roofing materials to burning brands constructed of wood, simulating an exposure to burning materials. A typical burning ember in a large fire is approximately 1/4" in size. The burning brands used in this test are 60 to 1,000 times that size. A 12 miles per hour wind is applied to the test deck until the test is completed. Flying -Brand Test Treated wood roofing material is tested to determine if the product will create flying embers in a fire situation. the treated wood is exposed to a gas flame of 1,300 ° F to 1,400 °F for 4 to 10 minutes. The wind applied to the test deck is increased to 18 miles per hour during this test. Rain Test This test is designed to try to flush fire retardants out of the treated wood. The roofing material is exposed to twelve weekly cycles of 96 -hours of water exposure (67.2 inches of water) and 72 hours of drying at 140 °F. The wood is subjected to a total of 806.4 inches of rain, equivalent to 24 years of rain in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Identification -The Certi -Guard label Identifies cedar shakes and shingles which have been pressure - impregnated with tire- retardant polymers to provide permanent fire protection. Class C shakes and shingles are identified by their blue Certi -Guard label. Class B shakes and shingles are identified by their red Certi -Guard Label. Class C and B labels must identify the treating company, the independent testing laboratory, and the building code research number. Material -Certi -Guard products are manufactured using #I grade handsplit shakes, 41 ,grade taper -sawn shakes or ml grade red cedar shingles. Application -Class C Rated Roof: Class C rated shakes or shingles shall be placed over spaced or solid sheathing. Class B Rated Roof: Class B rated shakes or shingles shall be placed over a minimum 1/2" solid sheathing. *Class A Rated Roof: Class B rated shakes or shingles shall be applied over a roof deck assembly consisting of a minimum 1/2" thick water- resistant gypsum board, applied to spaced or solid sheathing . A layer of spaced or 1/2" solid sheathing is then applied over the gypsum sheathing, to which the Class B shakes or shingles are applied. *Note: Check with your local building codes for other approved ClassA roofuna systems. Type X gypsum board or Dens -Deck may be installed over spaced or solid sheathing. If installed over spaced sheathing, pre - measure the nailing surface. You must have a solid nailing strip ecery five inches. Horizontal joints of the gypsum board must meet on the solid nailing surface. Type X gypsum board or Dens -Deck is to be used as a nonstructural fire barrier. Roof Pitch and Exposure Proper weather exposure is important. and depends largely on roof slope. On roof slopes of 4" rise in 12" horizontal run (pitch 1/6) and steeper, the standard exposures are: 5" for 16" shingles: i 1/3" for 18" shingles; and 7 1/2" for 24" shingles. On roof slopes less than 4/12 to a minimum of 3/13, reduced exposures are recommended Roof Application Shingles normally are applied in straight. single courses. Shingles must be doubled at all eaves. Butts of first- course shingles should project 1 1/2" beyond the first sheathing board. Spacing between adjacent shingles (joints) should be 1/4 ". Joints in any one course should be s. parated not less than 1 1/2" from joints in adjacent courses, andjoints in alternate courses should not be in direct alignment. Fasteners Hot dipped zinc coated nails or stainless steel staples are recommended. However, any U.B.C. approved corrosion- resistant fasteners can be used. Apply each shingle with two (only) fasteners. Each fastener should be placed not more than 3/4" from the side edge of the shingle and not more than I" above the exposure line. Use 3d (1 1/4 ") nails for 16" and 18" shingles and 4d (1 1/2 ") for 24" shingles. In all cases, fasteners should be long enough to penetrate at least 3/4" or through the sheathing. Drive them flush, but not so that the head crushes the wood. Valleys The roof valley flashing shall be provided of not less than No. 28 gauge pre - painted baked enamel metal applied over an underlayment of not less than Type 15 felt. The metal shall extend at least 8 inches from the center line each way. WARNING: Both raw and fire retardant treated cedar v +a "", I \ �"'- products contain a level of tannic acid that can cause corrosion to unprotected metals and concrete surfaces. Pre - painted galvanized or pre - painted aluminum gutters are recommended. Initial water runoff over both raw and fire retardant cedar can cause stainin *.
