OF PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO
DECLARING ITS SUPPORT THAT THE PROPOSED THOMPSON CREEK
WILDERNESS AREA AND ADDITIONAL AREA IN THE MAROON BELLS-
SNOWMASS WILDERNESS IN PITKIN COUNTY BE DESIGNATED
WILDERNESS

RECITALS
1. Pitkin County supports developing land use decisions at the local level with input from
all interested parties.
2. Decisions made concerning federal land management impact local communities the
greatest,and any decisions made by Congress must be based on input from these local
communities.
3. Pitkin County believes County Commissioners are appropriate facilitators as they
represent divergent stakeholders interested in wilderness designations and are able to
convene meetings of these stakeholders.
4. Pitkin County Commissioners possess unique authority under federal and state law for
lands in and around proposed wilderness areas.
5. Pitkin County Commissioners support the grassroots process that has previously taken
place to ensure equity to all stakeholders.
6. Wilderness areas are rapidly disappearing, while populations are increasing.
7. Proposed wilderness designations by federal agencies have a dramatic impact on local
citizens.
NOW THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED the Commissioners of Pitkin County,
Colorado that:
1. As a result of the CCI Wilderness Initiative, and other public input processes,Pitkin
County has determined that the Proposed Thompson Creek Wilderness Area in Pitkin
County(22,568 acres)and an additional 330 acres in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass
Wilderness should be designated wilderness.
2. Pitkin County believes this process was thorough and inclusive, and because the decision
was made at the local level with local input, designations of the aforementioned federal
lands in Pitkin County should be implemented.
