� REGARDING THE FORMATION OF A COLORADO

"' WHEREAS, Governor Lamm has requested support fran the City and County �
i
on the formation of a State Department of Transportation, and
$
WHEREAS, this new department would be expanded to include not only ';
highways but rail, aviation and public transportation responsibilities, and �+
WHEREAS, there currently exists two programs, Section 18 of tne Federal �
�
Surface Transportation Act of 1978 and Section 33 of the Airline Deregulation �
a
Act of 1978 that hold potential benefit for Aspen and Pitkin County but are � -
��` currently not being adequately utilized due to the lack of a State Department �
.�; �
of Transportation, and �
WHEREAS, the creation of a Department of Transportation is viewed by the
City and County as being beneficial to developing much needed alternatives to �
� automobile travel �

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Aspen and Pitkin County
support in principle the creation of a State Department of Transportation, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Aspen and Pitkin County will work
with state representatives to insure that Colorado developes a true multi-modal
f
organization with adequate budget and staff to deal effectively with the
� highway and non-highway transportation issues in Colorado.
