WHEREAS, the Pitkin County Diountain,Rescue Group is a °.';;=� •
nonprofit organization having as its purposes the search for and •`��"
rescue of lost or injured persons and the provision of search and '� _
rescue volunteers when the need arises and when called upon to do =�

WHEREAS, such services of the Pitkin Covnty Mountain Rescue ����_'�. `
Group are of benefit to the County, its residents and visitors, '°�' ` ..
and the County Sheriff; and �°��,,

F" WHEREAS, the Pitkin County Mountain Rescue Group has assumed . r••.
the responsibility as one of the primary response team(s) for �� '
search and rescue in Pitkin County, Colotado; and y :."
WHEREAS, the sheriff of Pitkin County, Colotado, has fhe
responsibility, and therefore the concomitant authority, for
coordination of all search and rescue operations within (the
local) County, Colorado, pursuant to Section 24-33.5-707 (10), 10
CRS (1985 Cum.Supp.);anc7
WHEREAS, the sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado frequently
requests the services provided by the Pitkin County Mountain "
Rescue Group; and ;,
WHEREAS, the Pitkin County Mountain Rescue Group and the
; sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado, desice to clarify their
relationship during search and rescue operations or missions;
NOW, fiBEREFORE, be it understood by and between the parties
as follows:
1, The sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado, has the ultfmate +.
responsibility and avthority for the coordination of all search
and rescue operations and missions within Pitkin County, Colo-
rado.

2. The Pitkin County Mountain Rescue Gcoup, its members,
other search aad rescue units the Pitkin County Mountain Rescue
Group requests to assist it, and their members will participate
in search and rescue operations and missions only at the request � ._:,;=>;�-�:'

3. Nothing in this Memorandum of Understanding shall be
construed to prevent the Sheriff or the Board of County Commis-
sioners of Pitkin County, Colocado, from establishing, formally •
or informally, standard proceduces for reporting directly to the
Pitkin County Mountain Rescue Group incidents which are or
potentially could culminate in a seasch and rescue operation or '��.'j�:�_
mission, or providing for the automatic response of the Pitkin j":�:';; �
County Mountain Rescue Group to search and rescue opezations or ;:��:.; :
missions within Pitkin County, Colorado. Any snch procedure `.�

shall reguire prompt notification to the County Sheriff of such ;:�,-.
incidents and that an automatic response has been initiated. N'
4, Attached hereto and incorporated herein by this ref- �`''
erence is a list of those members of the Pitkin County Mountain ��.'
Rescue Group, effective April 1. 1987, who will, from time to �°..' `
time, be participants in search and rescue operations or missions ',�:.+. •
for the benefit of the County and at the request of and subject `.�
,, to the control of the County Sheriff. In performing such �;
opecations or missions, the persons whose names appear on the • r•.,
list are authorized volunteers of the County. Names may be added !
to the list upon agreement of the Pitkin County Mountain Rescue
Group and the Covnty Sheriff and names may be deleted from the
Iist by the County Sheriff or by the Pitkin County Mountain
Rescue Group upon written notice to the other.
� 5. Attached hereto and incorporated herein by this ref-
` erence is a calendar of approved training exercises for the
Pitkfn County Mountain Rescue Group during 1987. Whi1e perform-
ing these specific training exercises, the members of the Pitkin
� County Mountain Rescue Group are authorized volunteers of the ?
j County.
