The developable rea lies soith of the Colorado u 'i•; -nt: Midland right-af-way on the south side of the Town of Aspen :•s between First and Third Street. This is within tne Aspen 7. , ` 1/ minute quadrangle. Pitkin County Colarado. .. -:.. . j The topography of the lower portion a4 the property consists of the steep northeastern-sloping hillside at the base of < Shadow Mountain where it merges ai.th the artificial berm - .-i'- which is the Colorada 'x Midland right-o4-way. Toward the ''"`d% southeast there is a long, linear depression between the bse - ?, of the mountain ad the old railroad bed. There is a prominent bench t the base of the Copperopolis claim ;. approzimately 74 feet above the base of the depression and =; : . west o4 it. Most of the nillside is covered with conifers up r_•? to LG to 1 inches in diameter. There are number of limestone and dolomite block:s scattered along the hillside ' ;;,i and its base with weil developed foot path system all alonq ,t-+`r, the hillside toard the base of the cli-ffs above. There are ,`j several mine dumps, indicating previous mine workinqs, in -{ this area. ...'i ..sy ;. The geology of the site consists of colluvial and talus r-. material which has bean derived over the centuries from the carbonate and sandstone outcrops above. This material ranqes ; ,y,., from clays silts. and sands to angular rocl:s and 6oulders. _ ---: No outcrops were visible within the re proposed for . ` development. The sandstone and carbonate units on the mountinside above the site are mostly the fulted Leadvil-le l, Limestone, Manitou rolomite, and Sao-atch Guart:ite oi : ,°»;:' F'aleozoic age. ecuse of the complexity of the qeoloqy of " the sitc-, it is difficult to ascertain what unit or units t' .'- tnderlie the proposed development site, 6ut is probably the t-,,.. 6elden Shale or one of the previously mentioned units. The general setting of tfiis geologic sequence of Paleooic rocks is that of the steeply dipping, ,"'`.'-r even overturned, west limb of a north-south trending syncline on Aspen Mountain. The Castle Creek fault zone passes just . west of the subject area. - t :• ' Although each of the four sites will be discussed separately, • t there are three types of geologic hazards which may be a fator on the pro.iect site: 1. Steep nd potentially unstable slopes '.' `;-,J ^c. Rocl:fall zones ; 3 s. Snow slides _ •.:y; , - building site #4 is at the rrest end of the development at the . ,i :_:=`-s- aest edge of r natural bench which should rovide a suitable • x=: ::y site for development. Very little hillside cuttinq aiill be ;, ' ' _'`,`' necessary, and roc{zfall and snow slide nazard is at a minimum ''; hecause of the generl topography and the thick cover of ' ; 1 ; conifers on the hillside above tne site. Nevertheless, i ' . especially if the toe of the hill is going to be cut at all, the rear wall of the home should act as a retaining vall to y.;.; this hillside ad protrude at least four feet above finished '?` grade with no doors or windows on this uphill-facina side. - Site specific soils engineering wil! be necessary as well as ::?:• positive draiage around the site. ± '±; ' ' Buildinq site #3 is t the narrnwer southeast end of this ':"-' bench. Because of this, more of a hillside cut will be ,) necessary. Even thouqh the hillside is somewhat gentler nere :1 . than elsewhere, it is very important that the rear wall ct '..e as a re±aininq wall to replace the material excavated. The ,, same conditions and mitigative recommendations far the -xwt, previously desribed site will also pertain here. In '' . addition, I believe that it is important to conduct a fator of safe±y analysis on the hillside aihere the toe will be 1' removed. .i Puilding site #2 is on a bench fnrmed bY old tailings ',S ' ''``= worM;inqs oit of the Alabma Tunnel. The tailings have been '` in alace for a long time and should be fairly stable, Gut , '1. site specific soils enqineerig will 6e necessary. The rear- f of the homesite should be landscaped so as to direct any, drainaqe around the rear of the site. This site is some•ihzt• more open to small snoti slides and minor roc't:-Fail than the ` :-' .,: _%'=" previous tao; therefore, I recammend that a small berm/trench i.: ;j feature be desiqned around the rear of the home in order to ;: n., protect against these two hazards.
