The purpose of this MOU is to outline the cooperative relationship between the Forest Service,RFfA,and
Pitkin County tor conirolling access on the Maroon Creek Road during the summer months from the National
Forest property boundary to the terminus of the road at the Maroon Lake Campground,and providing public
mass transportation from an off-Forest staging area to Maroon Lake.

Itl. Introduction
�
During the 197D's,visitorship to the Maroon Vatley area had increased to a point where resource damage,
tra�c congestEon,and accident poterrtiai were noi acceptabie.�7a minimize the impacts on the Vailey,a
shuttle bus system was instituted in 1977 to help alleviate the detrimental effects largely attribuYed to
unrestricted motor vehicle traffic. Three agencies have responsibitity in the operation. RFTA oversees the -
- operation of the buses and related facilities. The Forest Service controls access to the valiey and adminis-
ters related functions on the Nationai Forest. Pitkin County maintains jurisdiction of the roadway. � ,

V. THE TRANSIT AGENCY SHALL: .

have adequate capaciry to provide for the anticipated usa as agresd upon in the Annuai '
Operating Ptan.
2. Construct or purchase and erect signi�g related to the bus service from the paint of origination

� 3. Comply with regulations of the DepaRment of Agriculture and ail federal,state,courny,and �
J municipaf laws, ordinances, or regulations which are applicabie to the area of operations
