This team will meet between 2-4 times next year to provide input from the public official and resource manager perspectives. It would be great to have Pitkin invoived but I understand if BOCC approval is necessary and there is not enough time.Piease [et me k��ow if we can list Pitkin County in this letter. Again, there is no financial commitment,just an agreement to provide one or more representatives for the Community Advisory Team.Aspen Global Change Institute hopes to submit the proposal by the end ofi the week(the deadline was extended to 1 1/16). Email secured by Check Point ,v � 1 THE C[YY OF ASPEN November 14,2012 Dear Grant Review Committee, On behalf of the City of Aspen, 1 would like to express my support for the Building Resilience to Drought in the Upper Colorado Basin:Adaptation Strategies for the Roaring Fork Watershed project. This project will not only benefit my community and our neighboring communities, but it will serve as a replicable model for other areas, especially in the Intermountain West. , Aspen is in the Roaring Fork watershed on the Western Slope of Colorado.Our region, like many places, is experiencing growing concerns about the impacts of climate change and variability, some of which we are already seeing, such as severe drought and reduced snowpack, increased pine beetle activity and increased wildfire. Com.munities in the Roaring Fork Valley, including Aspen, are committed to doing our part to reduce the threat of climate change. From climate action planning to investments in renewable energy and fostering energy efficiency,our communities are working to address climate change on many fronts.At the same time,we recognize that extreme weather events are already occurring and that we need to prepare for the impacts of climate change, particularly in building resilience to drought, so we are looking to regional adaptation planning. The Building Resilience to Drought in the Upper Colorado Basin:Adaptation Strategies for the Roaring Fork Watershed project will help us by providing analyses and tools that will be essential to adaptation planning and informed decision making here in the Roaring Fork Valley.Though each community in the watershed has unique characteristics and concerns, a regional picture of impacts we can anticipate, as well as mountain community- specific indicators,would be helpful in emergency preparedness planning, utility planning, and preparing for shifting economic factors. The City of Aspen,along with the Towns of Carbondale and Basalt,will commit to providing one or more representatives to serve on the Community Advisory Team. Members of this team will be comprised of"end- users"such as municipal staff, utility managers,elected officials and other community decision makers.The purpose of the team will be to provide input on unique community characteristics, perceived vulnerabilities to climate disruption and what types of data and decision-making tools would best serve communities.
