The Community Development Department coordinates the review of these activities /events by various referral agencies in order to ensure that the activities /events are conducted in a safe manner, and that any impacts on the community or on public resources are mitigated by the permittee. Following review of the application, the Community Development Director will issue an Administrative Determination granting or denying the permit. Each little moment in the bigger films that I make are like little pieces of the puzzle to a bigger picture. If a moment in one of my movies is false or missing, the whole picture has... well, a hole. That's what I selfishly love about this spot. It allows me to work in the micro moments and make a mini movie that is full of life (it also strengthens my moments muscle). _ The moments in this film are familiar to us. Simple, human moments we've all felt and experienced. We know what it's like to face adversity, have a bad day and want to give up, but dig deep and find a way to persevere. To render these moments truly, we must capture them from inside, to convey them as experience rather than observation. The story we're really telling is not about an athlete at work, but rather the interior experience of something we all know about. Much of my aesthetic vision comes from the idea of looking at things we might have seen before in a new way. I want to rediscover what is new and fresh about these relatable moments. That doesn't mean bells and whistles and a bag of magic tricks: it means intimacy (with Heath), authenticity (with the world), and vision (with the storytelling power of images). The underlying message here is how transparent human technology has become and how seamlessly we have integrated it into our daily lives. I'll convey this with a film that gently captures the relatable human truth of this terrific story, one that makes transparent small moments of interior life and celebrates the human spirit, drive, and our wonderful tendency to overcome. i� El Paralympian There have been many times in my life - -after a discouraging 18 -hour slog in an editing bay, for example -- when a text from my wife or a picture from my kid buoyed my mood and kept me going when I'd rather give up. This film should seek to capture a universal human experience -- overcoming the reluctance of a discouraging day to pursue your goals --and in this Heath is no different from anyone else... Except he is - he is one of a kind. And 1 want to embrace his uniqueness while simultaneously reveal what is universally true about him. The most straightforward and honest way to approach a story like this is to shoot Heath as a normal guy. We won't avoid his prosthetics, but the story is not about them. They are incidental. The common truth is the challenging of facing down the negative voices inside you and - -with the help and support of loved ones -- listening to your higher calling. I want to see this moment as Heath sees it and feel it as he feels it. Highly subjective. POV In his heart and soul and mind. We should feel Heath has had a hard day, see the challenges of training were particularly difficult this day. We should understand that in his physical demeanor - -the slumped shoulders, aching back, and stiff neck as he sits in the locker room prepared to call it a day. If possible, I'd like to film some scenes of Heath on the slopes, dealing with difficulty: bad weather, mistiming a mogul, missing a gate, or wiping out. Seeing quick flash cuts of his "bad day" intercut with the moment in the locker room will help tell the inner story of what he's facing down. We should see these images from his POV, as if he's replaying them in his head, unable to not think about them. Every ski jacket now has a phone pocket designed in to it, and smartphones are as much at home on the slopes as they are everywhere else in our connected lives. We'll treat this tech just as naturally; the tech should be completely integrated into the moment. When the text or photo arrives from his family it's like a St. Bernard with a Bask of brandy; we should be more focused on its genuine curative properties of the liquor than on the presence of the dog. M r-i O �J rT I The Beauty of the Real Capturing the interiority of this scene will require a DP with the simplicity and sensitivity to get the camera into the moment in ways that illuminate rather than objectify. I'd like to use one of the DPs from my feature films, (hopefully Andrij Parekh who shot BLUE VALENTINE), someone who can tell a visual story simply while capturing its natural beauty. The film shouldn't feel as though we are trying too hard; instead, we should capture the natural aesthetics of reality. It should feel like a movie without ever feeling overproduced. We want to avoid cliches, and if we find ourselves outside these moments we'll lose the sense of connection I want. We'll rather work in a way that makes the viewer feel like they are sitting on Heath's shoulder in the locker room We should project a participatory quality that makes us feel as if we're there, and we'll get that from a camera that is both loose and elegant. Locations In Which We Live I think the right location gets you halfway to that sense of authenticity that will make this spot unique. Small details, like the echoing ring of a mountain locker room and chipped tile of a shower stall, get us to a real place, one that feels inhabited. Our production designer simply finishes the job, to give us the storytelling details that communicate the message. +K::!
