HomeMy WebLinkAboutbocc.packet.09242014 - Pitkin Cares ProclamationA PROCLAMATION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS RECOGNIZING Willard Clapper FOR HIS VOLUNTEER WORK IN PITKIN COUNTY WHEREAS, Willard Clapper was a member of the Aspen Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years, and like his father Willard senior, he also served as Fire Chief WHEREAS, Willard Clapper fought a lot of fires through the years, and even lit a few, during over three decades of 41h of July celebrations. But fighting and lighting fires isn't all he has done for this community; and WHEREAS, as a school teacher in Aspen Mr. C had a long and robust teaching career that had a positive influence on hundreds of local children. After retirement, he continued to work with young people modeling leadership and ethics through a program he and fellow teacher A.O. Forbes founded called "Tomorrow 's Voices"; and WHEREAS, it's hard to keep from smiling when talking about Willard Clapper because he exudes enthusiasm and is nearly always smiling himself Whether he is coaching football or basketball, chatting it up with tourists as a ski ambassador, herding volunteer firefighters, or lighting fuses for the fireworks grand finale, Willard is, and will remain, as much a part of the fabric of this community as the Aspen trees themselves; and WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners recognizes the critical role volunteers play in strengthening the social fabric of our community and wants to honor those who go the extra mile. Ittner, Jr. PROCLAMATION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO RECOGNIZING Connie Taddune FOR HER VOLUNTEER WORK IN PITKIN COUNTY WHEREAS, Connie Taddune has been a Pathfinder volunteer for nearly ten years: and WHEREAS, when Connie Taddune is called upon to cook and deliver a meal to a cancer patient or to the family of a cancer patient she always rises to the occasion"; and WHEREAS, Connie Taddune is the perfect role model to nearly 100 other Pathfinder volunteers who can emulate the love she puts into the preparation of the meals and the extra time she takes visiting with patients if the opportunity presents itself. and WHEREAS, Connie Taddune can be relied upon to give with a smile and offer comfort to many of whom are fighting the biggest battle of their lives. Ittner, Jr. 1 A PROCLAMATION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS RECOGNIZING Terry Rigney FOR HER VOLUNTEER WORK IN PITKIN COUNTY WHEREAS, while Terry Rigney works full time for the Aspen School District managing the high school counseling office, she finds time to go the extra mile for the benefit of students; and WHEREAS, Terry Rigney designed and organized a school mentoring program called "College Trek" that benefits 150 students a year. She coordinates "trekkers" from the community to go to Aspen High School weekly to assist students with everything from job applications and resumes to college essays and scholarship applications; and WHEREAS, Terry Rigney is the past Chair of Spring Board, has volunteered at the Aspen Homeless Shelter, Challenge Aspen, and has been a Sunday school teacher and AmeriCorps volunteer, to name just a few of her extracurricular activities; and WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners recognizes the critical role volunteers play in strengthening the social fabric of our community and wants to honor those who go the "extra mile." Ittner, Jr. T -111111r— PROCLAMATION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO RECOGNIZING Susan Cross FOR HER VOLUNTEER WORK IN PITKIN COUNTY WHEREAS, Susan Cross has gained the reputation as one of the most avid volunteers with Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers (RFOV); and WHEREAS, Susan Cross is known among her co-workers at the Aspen Skiing Company as "Susan -how many trails can one person do -Cross"; and WHEREAS, an avid hiker, bicyclist, and conservationist, Susan has been volunteering with RFOV since 2002; and WHEREAS, in addition to swinging a tool, Susan Cross serves as an RFOV Ambassador on projects and greets volunteers at trailhead tables. She has also been a member of the volunteer development committee since 2009 and has been a huge help in that role; and WHEREAS, Susan Cross has just finished her 3rd year as Buttermilk Mountain Manager where she happens to be the first female mountain manager in the Skiing Company's history and she has been successful in her efforts to recruit Ski Company employees to participate in RFOV work days. Ittner, Jr. • A PROCLAMATION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS RECOGNIZING Paul Pariser FOR HIS VOLUNTEER WORK IN PITKIN COUNTY WHEREAS, Paul Pariser has served as the Chair of the Aspen Art Museum 's New Building Committee since 2011; and WHEREAS, Paul Pariser has volunteered hundreds of hours of his time to oversee the construction, budget, and schedule of the new Aspen Art Museum; and WHEREAS, Paul 's involvement, along with his expertise in the field of real estate development has been essential to the success of the Aspen Art Museum project. and WHEREAS, over 8, 000 people visited the new Art Museum during the first 24- hours after it opened to the public. The facility was paid for entirely by private funds and admission is free; and WHEREAS, the Aspen Art Museum is grateful for Paul Pariser's invaluable contributions to this new addition to our community. Ittner, Jr. 1 ANIL- PROCLAMATION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO RECOGNIZING Mariann Altfeld FOR HER VOLUNTEER WORK IN PITKIN COUNTY WHEREAS, Mariann Altfeld epitomizes the volunteer spirit and gives selflessly of her time; and WHEREAS, Mariann Altfeld has been dedicated to the Aspen Music Festival and School for more than 25 years where she has implemented and led the entire volunteer program; and WHEREAS, today the program encompasses more than 250 volunteers who serve as the face of the festival to the community and visitors alike; and WHEREAS, it is said by her coworkers that Mariann Altfeld is a remarkable woman who is gracious, personable, capable, passionate, loyal, dependable, and a tremendous teammate who leads by example; and WHEREAS, the Roaring Fork Valley is fortunate to have Mariann Altfeld representing our community to guests and fellow residents. Ittner, Jr. 1 PROCLAMATION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO RECOGNIZING Marcia Goshorn FOR HER VOLUNTEER WORK IN PITKIN COUNTY WHEREAS, Marcia Goshorn has long been a volunteer for social good in Aspen; and WHEREAS, Marcia has been a Pitkin County appointee on the Housing Authority Board for 11 years and on the Senior Services Board for three years; and WHEREAS, her volunteer spirit and dedication doesn't end there, her longest volunteer role has been with Komen Aspen where she has been in charge of breakfast for Race for the Cure for more than two decades; and WHEREAS, Marcia also served on the Komen Aspen Board for five years and was president from 2010 to 2013. Her pickup truck reportedly came in very handy to transport tables, chairs, and auction items and it is said that she was by far the most consistent and reliable team player; and WHEREAS, Marcia continues to advocate for access to healthcare for women and their families. She has the gift of giving back and tirelessly helps local causes that connect, collaborate, and commit to local health initiatives. Ittner, Jr. A PROCLAMATION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS RECOGNIZING Kent "Captain" Bigalow FOR HIS VOLUNTEER WORK IN PITKIN COUNTY WHEREAS, Kent Bigalow is a Chicago transplant who has lived in Aspen for more than 40 years. He is affectionately known as "Captain" not only because he is hard-working and intelligent but because of his booming voice that lets everyone know he 's in the room; and WHEREAS, Kent Bigalow assists many seniors who need computer help. He is patient, and very technically knowledgeable; and WHEREAS, Captain is the monthly newsletter stapler at the Senior Center and is a regular member of the popular Mahjong Group, an ancient Chinese tile game similar to the card game Gin Rummy; and WHEREAS, Kent Bigalow was the manager of the Senior Center softball team for three years. He attended every game, kept score and coached first and third bases. He is literally a "team player"; and WHEREAS, it is also not unusual for Captain to volunteer in the Senior Center kitchen. He has carved many -a -turkey on Thanksgiving at the center. Kent Bigalow also volunteers for the Shining Stars Foundation and the skiing veterans who come to Aspen and Snowmass every year. Ittner, Jr. PROCLAMATION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO RECOGNIZING Isabel Wolfer FOR HER VOLUNTEER WORK IN PITKIN COUNTY WHEREAS, Isabel Wolfer is an outstanding senior at Aspen High School. She has distinguished herself as a volunteer for Pathfinders, a cancer patient care organization that meets peoples' needs during particularly difficult times and for the Buddy Program; and WHEREAS, Isabel Wolfer already understands commitment and she is known to "jump in with both feet, heart, soul and mind" to all she chooses; and WHEREAS, Isabel Wolfer was this year's youth representative on the Pitkin County Citizen Grant Review Committee helping to make decisions about the allocation of two million dollars to local non -profits; and WHEREAS, Isabel Wolfer has also found time to lead school clubs including Support Our Soldiers, Health Career Club and Action in Africa, to name a few; and WHEREAS, her teachers and high school counselors agree that Isabel Wolfer is a giver and inclusive beyond her years. They say she always provides the first hello and the last warm good-bye. Ittner, Jr. \-_.(t, . , h'� �-t - V•` �:-�� T =% _ �u" '! _ i..f� ter' I'' �'' % f� P 1 -1111r- A PROCLAMATION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS RECOGNIZING Lieutenant Colonel Richard "Dick" Merritt FOR HIS VOLUNTEER WORK IN PITKIN COUNTY WHEREAS, Dick Merritt was a career Marine and served in the Philippines, Japan, Vietnam and China; and WHEREAS, as a retired Lieutenant Colonel Dick Merritt is one of the founders of the Roaring Fork Veterans History Project in association with the Library of Congress; and WHEREAS, Colonel Merritt has spent countless hours interviewing local veterans who have served in World War 11, the 10`h Mountain Division, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq for a permanent video record at the Library of Congress. So far 32 interviews have been presented and shown locally on Grassroots Television; and WHEREAS, Dick Merritt devotes many hours every year as a volunteer for the Disabled Veterans Sports Clinic in Aspen and Snowmass; and WHEREAS, everyone knows Dick as one of the key organizers of the Veteran's Day ceremony in Aspen where he shares stories with the public and encourages his fellow veterans to share theirs. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED, that the Board of County Commissioners is honored to present this proclamation to Dick Merritt for his outstanding dedication and commitment and recognizes him for receiving the Pitkin County Cares Volunteer Service "Community Pride" Award. Ittner, Jr. 1 PROCLAMATION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO RECOGNIZING Diane Anderson FOR HER VOLUNTEER WORK IN PITKIN COUNTY WHEREAS, Diane Anderson has been actively volunteering in Aspen for over 40 years and has been a longstanding board member, supporter, and advocate for the Buddy Program for the last 15 years; and WHEREAS, Diane Anderson has also served many other outstanding local organizations in various roles, such as President of the Board of the Aspen Valley Foundation and the Aspen Art Museum, and on the boards of the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, Jazz Aspen, Aspen Youth Center, Aspen Historical Society, and Aspen Education Foundation; and WHEREAS, it is truly her personal touch that makes Diane stand out as a volunteer. She sincerely gives her heart and soul to making a difference in community organizations by making personal phone calls and sending thoughtful, hand-written letters to donors. She also volunteers in the Buddy Program office and makes meaningful connections with staff which positively impacts the entire program; and WHEREAS, Diane's advice and experience have been critical throughout various transitions of the Buddy Program where she consistently provides steadfast guidance; and WHEREAS, Diane genuinely engages with buddies, donors, board and community members, sharing her passion for the many causes she supports. Ittner, Jr. 1 • 17. r 4` I ` PROCLAMATION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PITKIN COUNTY, COLORADO RECOGNIZING Amy Throm FOR HER VOLUNTEER WORK IN PITKIN COUNTY WHEREAS, for the past 15 years Amy Throm has served tirelessly as a volunteer advocate for RESPONSE: Help for Victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault; and WHEREAS, Amy Throm has regularly taken shifts on the 24-hour helpline every month and provided emotional support, information, referrals, and safety planning to clients in need; and WHEREAS, Amy Throm has accompanied clients to court, to meetings with law enforcement, and to the hospital for sexual assault forensic exams. She provides caring, non judgmental, confidential, and knowledgeable advocacy to individuals while they are experiencing significant trauma, confusions, and feelings of hopelessness; and WHEREAS, while many people volunteer with RESPONSE, no one has remained an advocate as long as Amy even though the work can be very demanding emotionally and logistically; and WHEREAS, as the current Vice -President of RESPONSE, Amy governs gracefully, while bringing tremendous value, experience, time, and talent to the organization. She is visionary and her positive energy is contagious.
