In Support of the Aspen Ambulance District Ballot Question 1 A
RESOLUTION NO.ljgy -2014
Whereas, first responders from the Aspen Ambulance District are there for us 24/7 and now they need us to
be there for them by voting yes on ballot question IA; and
Whereas, a yes vote will ensure that highly trained personnel with modern equipment respond when you call
911. Aspen Ambulance responds to accidents roadside, in private homes, in businesses, on construction sites,
at our ski areas, at our schools, the airport and on public lands throughout its 164 square mile district.
Whereas, a yes vote will also allow the Aspen Ambulance District to maintain and purchase state-of-the-art
communications and medical equipment, replace aging ambulances, and create secure facilities for today's
larger -sized ambulances; and
Whereas, Aspen Ambulance District services are not limited to medical response. We rely on them to train
the community in CPR and the use of AEDs. Ambulance District personnel help administer flu shots,
distribute kids' ski and bike helmets, they support wellness fairs and give stand-by medical support at special
events and school athletic events; and
Whereas, the Aspen Ambulance District has made significant efforts to reduce costs while increasing service
and efficiency. The current budget is not sustainable due in large part to reduced health insurance payments,
an aging and inadequate garage and office facility, rising costs for fuel, vehicle replacement, and specialized
medical equipment.
Whereas, residents in the Aspen Ambulance District currently pay less than $4 per $100,000 of assessed
property value for this vitally important service. A yes vote on 1 A will cost the property owner just over
$6 per $100,000 of assessed residential property value. This is the only time in the Ambulance District's
32 -year history that they have asked voters in the district to reset their mill levy.
Whereas, we ask residents in the Aspen Ambulance District to join us, and the other Friends of the Aspen
Ambulance District, including the Aspen Skiing Company, Aspen Chamber Resort Assocition, and Public
Safety Council, to support of this critical ballot question.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of Pitkin County,
Colorado that, we encourage and support a yes vote on ballot question IA.
