Septic permit approved per compliance with the engineer design and specifications dated January 13, 2000. Any
changes must be approved by this department and the design engineer prior to them being made.
Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the Pitkin
County ISDS regulations. This department does not endorse any brand of products.
The engineer must do a final inspection of the installation and submit an as -built letter to this department. This
department must also be called for an inspection with a minimum of 48 hours advanced notice.
System design calls for a 1250 gallon two compartment tank with a pump in the biotube vault in the second
compartment. Distribution box must have a baffle. Two lines running into two trenches, each having 1 row of 9
chambers. Trenches must have a minimum of 6 feet of undisturbed soil between them. A setback of at least 50
feet to the irrigation ditch must be maintained from the absorption field. The area where the absorption field is
installed should not be used as a horse corral. This area should remain free of traffic of any kind.

As requested, we observed the installation of the onsite wastewater system (OWS) for the subject site on
December 12, 2001. The system was designed under our Job No. 11948W, dated April 25, 2000.
The system includes the installation of one 1250 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank
with a pump in a BiotubeTM pump vault in the second compartment. Two gravelless chamber trenches
were installed, each with one row of nine chambers, as indicated on Figure 1. A concrete distribution box
was used to distribute effluent to the beds. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1.
The pump and BiotubO'm vault were in place at the time of our site visit. The OWS construction foreman,
Tony with Haberman Construction, may activate pumping system at his discretion. The components of
the OWS were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications.

Dear Mr. I laberman,
As requested, we have reviewed the subsurface conditions reported by HP Geotech for the subject site and
prepared an onsite wastewater system (OWS) design for the proposed residence. The subsurface
investigation was performed on October 18, 1999.
SITE CONDITIONS
The property is located in a rural residential area in Pitkin County where OWS are required. There are
several existing buildings located on the property with a two-bedroom residence proposed as indicated on
Figure 1. The Crystal River flows south to north along the western portion of the property and there is a
seasonal irrigation ditch flowing through the center part of the property from south to north. The proposed
drain field area is relatively flat, and has thin cover of native grasses. The proposed residence will be located
topographically lower than the drain field. There are two existing wells located 500+ feet from the
proposed drain field.
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
A two-bedroom residence with an area less than 2000 square feet (SF) is proposed as presented on Figure
1. We have sized the OWS based on 2 bedrooms and 300 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin
Environmental Health Department (APEHD) loading of 75 gallons per day per person. The design sewage
loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 525 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and garbage
grinders. The drain field is to be a minimum of 100 feet to all wells and 50 feet from the irrigation ditch.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
HP Geotech performed a subsurface investigation by digging 3 percolation holes, 50 to 62 inches deep, and
one profile pit at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions in Profile 1 consisted of 1.5 feet
of topsoil, underlain by silty sand to 4.5 feet, underlain to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet by silty
sandy gravel with scattered cobbles. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 12 to 17 minutes per inch
(MPI). The average percolation rate is 14 W1. Percolation data is presented in Appendix A.
RECOMMENDATIONS
We recommend the installation of a septic tank, a pump, and two chamber -type trenches installed at the
locations presented on Figure 1. The OWS design is based on a design sewage load of 525 GPD and a
percolation rate of 14 MPI. The installation requires one 1250 -gallon two-compartment precast concrete

septic tank with a pump in a Biotube vault in the second compartment, as indicated on Figure 3. Total flow
rate of 25 Gallons Per Minute (GPM) and a Total Dynamic Head of 46.5 feet is needed for the pump. Pump
details are present on Figure 4. We recommend the installation of two trenches, each with 1 row of 9
chambers with 4" PVC perforated pipe place on the surface of the ground. A distribution box is required to
distribute effluent to the fields.
Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to
prevent compaction of the receiving soils. We recommend the bottom of the bed be scarified with a
pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers.
The surface of the field should be seeded after installation using a native seed mix available at seed stores.
These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler
system should be installed over the field.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of
and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, we
recommend the septic tank be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as
applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic
or other nonbiodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized.
The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed
for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas
should not be introduced to the OWS.
LIMITATIONS
An OWS design should be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation,
layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably
different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on
the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to
evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon
completion of the OWS
All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements,
septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to
the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of
the APEHD ISDS regulations and requirements.

Percolation Testing: Percolation tests were conducted on 1:9, :4999 to evaluate
the feasibility of an infiltration septic disposal system at the site. One profile pit and
three percolation holes were dug at the locations shown on Fig. 1. The test holes
(nominal 12 inch diameter by 12 inch deep) were hand dug at the bottom of shallow
backhoe pits were soaked with water one day prior to testing. The soils exposed in the
percolation holes are similar to those exposed in the Profile Pit shown on Fig'. 2 and
consist of about 1'/z feet of topsoil and 3 feet of medium dense silty sand overlying
relatively dense silty sandy gravel with cobbles. The percolation test results are
presented in Table II. The percolation test results indicate an infiltration rate between
12 and 17 minutes per inch with an average of`' ° JWh. Based on the
subsurface conditions encountered and the percolation test results, the tested area should
be suitable for a conventional infiltration septic disposal system.
Limitations: This study has been conducted in accordance with generally accepted
geotechnical engineering principles and practices in this area at this time. We make no
warranty either expressed or implied. The conclusions and recommendations submitted
in this report are based upon the data obtained from the exploratory pits excavated at the
locations indicated on Fig. 1, the proposed type of construction and our experience in
the area. Our findings include interpolation and extrapolation of the subsurface
conditions identified at the exploratory pits and variations in the subsurface conditions
may not become evident until excavation is performed. If conditions encountered
during construction appear different from those described in this report, we should be
notified at once so re-evaluation of the recommendations may be made.
This report has been prepared for the exclusive use by our client for design purposes.
We are not responsible for technical interpretations by others of our information. As
the project evolves, we should provide continued consultation and field services during
construction to review and monitor the implementation of our recommendations, and to
