The system was designed under our Job No. 15405.02W, dated September 8, 2004. The single system serves both historic cabins. The system includes the installation of 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septictank with gravity flow to the distribution box from Cabin I and a 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with a pump rn a Biotube® pump vault from Cabin 2 as indicated on Figure 1 The control panel was installed in the basement of Cabin 2. Two gravelless chamber -trenches were installed. The drain field was installed in two trenches, each with one row of 10 chamal bers for a tot of 20 chambers and 310 ft2 of infiltrative area. A 5 -outlet plastic distribution box with a 45-degrec turndown was installed to distribute effluent to the trenches. The components of the OW S design were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications. Final electrical connections must b» made by a licensed electrician. The revisions are based on a new location for the drain field and the addition of an effluent pump from our latest revised design, dated August 13, 2004. All previous designs should be discarded to avoid confusion. Our firm investigated subsurface conditions on June 19, 2003. SITE CONDITIONS The property is located in a rural area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has a 10% slope to the south and has a moderate cover of native grasses and sagebrush. A pond is proposed 50+ feet to the southwest and a domestic water cistern is proposed 25+ feet to the west of the drain field area. Water is provided to the site by an onsite well, located 100+ feet to the west of the proposed drain field, PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION There are two proposed cabin restorations at the site. The eastern cabin is to be restored to 2 - bedrooms with a living area under 2000 ft2 and the western cabin restored containing a toilet and sink only. The OWS was sized based on 2 bedrooms, a toilet, and a sink sized for two people each, for an average loading of 360 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (PCEHD) loading of 75 GPD per person per bedroom, 25 GPD per person per toilet, and 5 GPD per person per sink. The sewage loading with a peak factor of 1.75 is 630 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and a garbage grinder. If additional bedrooms in unfinished areas are possible, it is suggested that the OWS be constructed to handle the additional loading. The installation of a properly engineered OWS to serve future build -out can be cost effective. Subsurface materials encountered in the profile hole consisted of 6 inches of topsoil, underlain by silty, sandy, clay with sparse cobbles clay to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. Ground water was not encountered. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 16 Minutes Per Inch (MPI) to 27 MPI. The average percolation rate is 20 MPI. Percolation test results are included as Table 1. RECOMMENDATIONS The proposed OWS includes the installation of two septic tanks, an effluent pump, and a gravelless chamber -trench drain field, at the locations presented on Figure 2. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 360 GPD and a percolation rate of 20 MPI. The installation must include one 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet at the eastern cabin and one 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, concrete septic tank with a Biotube® pump vault in the second compartment at the western cabin. Pump specifications are included as Figure 6. The drain field must have two rows of 10 gravelless-chambers each, for a total of 20 chambers and 310 ft2 of infiltrative area. A flow splitter basin, or equivalent, is required to distribute effluent to the trenches. Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to minimize compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the trenches should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix should be sown at the drain field to re -vegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and may develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the field. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of, and assume responsibility for, ongoing maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years or more frequently if needed. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping or as needed. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other non -biodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized to reduce the frequency of pumping. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet can use in excess of 1000 GPD. An additional 1000 GPD loading may flood and irreparably harm the system. We caution against the installation of a water softener. The hydraulic loading from the backwash of a water softener is detrimental to an OWS and a separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. No landscaping or plastic can be used over the field, which will reduce performance of the field. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. The design of the OWS is based on the treatment of domestic sewage only. No industrial or hazardous wastes should be introduced into the OWS. eD • • Revised OWS Design Job No. 15405W, Historic Site, 9/9/04 Page 3 LIMITATIONS Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the change on the proposed OWS. If the health department modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. Hyman Aspen, CO 81611 RE: Lost Basin Ranch Cabin Well and Homestead Well Pump Test Dear Gldeon: T-073 P.002/012 F-556 July 29, 2003 Resource Engineering, Inc. has evaluated the data from the July 21 & 22 — 24 hour pump tests of the Cabin and Homestead wells that were performed by Samuelson Pump Company. This letter summarizes our evaluation of the data and provides recommendations for long term operation of the wells, ',Homestead Well The Homestead well is approximately 150 feet deep. The water level at the start of the test was 30.71 feet below the top of the well casing. The well was pumped at 15 gallons per minute for 24 hours and water level dropped continually throughout the test. After 24 ££burs the water level was at 56.63 feet, a total of 25.92 feet of drawdown. At the end of the test the water level was approximately 93 feet above the bottom of the well. Approximately 21,600 gallons was pumped during the test. Figure 1, attached, shows the drawdown curve for the pump test. With pumping time .displayed on a logarithmic scale the pumping level is shown to decline at a steadily Increasing rate. This Indicates that the well In mining the aquifer and Is not capable of .pumping at a sustained 15 gpm. At 15 gpm It Is probable that the pumping level would continue to decline until the water level reaches the pump Intake. The data cannot be used to determined how long this would take. The well's recovery after pumping also confirms that the aquifer's Inability to maintain a sustained 15 gpm pumping rate. The water level in the well did not fully recover 24 hours after pumping stopped. After 24 hours of recovery the water level was still 5.9 feet below the starting level. If a well were fully recharging the residual drawdown would have reached zero at T/T' of 2 or greater. Cabin Well The Cabin well Is a slightly better producer than the Homestead well although the behavior is similar. The Homestead well is also approximately 150 feet deep. The water level at the start of the test was 29.23 feet below the top of the well casing. The well was pumped at 15 gallons per minute for 24 hours and water level dropped continually throughout the test. Approximately 21,600 gallons was pumped during the test. Figure 3, attached, shows the drawdown curve for the pump test. With pumping time displayed on a logarithmic scale the pumping level Is shown to decline at a steadily increasing rate. This indicates that the well In mining the aquifer, pumping at a rate faster than the welt can sustain. This Is also confirmed by the well's recovery after pumping. After 24 hours of recovery the water level was still 2.3 feet below the starting level. Figure 4 graphically depicts the recovery. Conclusions • The wells are not capable of a sustained pumping rate of 15 gallons per minuie. If pumped continually at 15 gpm there Is a risk that both wells will pump dry. This is a greater risk for the Homestead well than for the Cabin weft. • Ground water recharge from irrigation In the Bane meadow will benefit the wells. Had there been Irrigation occurring during the tests the Initial water level would have likely been higher and the drawdown less over the course of the tests. Maintenance of flood irrigation In the meadow is important to help maintain the wells. Both wells are adequate for in-house uses In large residences but Irrigation uses should be very limited. Recommendations • The pumping rate from each well should be restricted to 10 gpm by installation of flow control valves. This will help limit the drawdown in the wells and help ensure that the wells are not pumped dry, • Sufl9clent storage should be provided to meet peak demands greater than 10 I gpm. Fora large residence 5 to 10,000 gallons is recommended. Foran Individual small cabin a lesser amount, 1,000 gallons is recommended. • The most Important recommendation is that frrigation from the wells shoufd be severely restricted. Use in the residential landscape irrigation system should be limited to the early and late Irrigation season when water is not available from the Lost Basin Pipeline or Bane Ditch. The raw water irrigation sources should be utilized as the primary irrigation source for all landscaping to the maximum extent possible. Landscape Irrigation circuits that rely on the wells in early and late season should be designed for a maximum flow rate or 10 gpm.
