Any changes must be approved by this department and the design engineer rior to them being made. Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the Pitkin County ISDS regulations. Engineer has stated that a 50 ft setback from the ditch to the absorption area is appropriate to prevent contamination. This system will consist of one 1000 -gallon two-compartment tank with a pump in the second compartment for the cabin; a 2,000 gallon single -compartment tank in series with one 1500 gallon two-compartment concrete tank with dual effluent pumps in a biotube pump vault for the main house. The common absorption area is ten trenches, each with 14 gravelles chambers, for a total of 140 chambers. This permit must be kept on-site during installation. The engineer must do a final inspection of the installation and submit an as -built letter to this department. This department must also be called for an inspection with a minimum of 48 hours advanced notice. The system was designed under Job No. 15405.02W, dated July 9, 2003. The system includes the installation of a 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with a pump in a BiotubeTM pump vault at the caretaker unit. It is understood that a 2000 -gallon, single - compartment, precast concrete septic tank followed by a 1500 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with dual pumps in a Biotube'rm pump vault will be installed at the main residence at a later date as part of a tank only permit. A gravelless chamber -trench drain field was installed in 10 rows of 14 chambers each for a total of 140 chambers and of 2170 square feet of infiltrative area. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1. The components were installed in general conformance with plans and specifications. A licensed electrician must make power supply connections to the control panel. The construction foreman may activate the pumping systems at his discretion. The previous design, dated May 15, 2003, incorporated just the guest cabin and should be discarded to avoid confusion. Our firm investigated subsurface conditions on June 22, 2003 and July 7, 2003. SITE CONDITIONS The property is located in a rural area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has a 10% slope to the northwest and has a moderate cover of native grasses. The residence and guest cabin will be served water by an onsite well located 244+ feet to the northeast of the proposed drain field. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION The proposed residence will have five bedrooms with a total living area of greater than 6000 square feet (SF) and the guest cabin will have two bedrooms with a total living area of less than 2000 SR The OWS was sized based on 5 bedrooms and 1300 Gallons Per Day (GPD) for the main residence and 2 bedrooms and 300 GPD for the guest cabin using Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (PCEHD) loading of 130 gallons per day per person and 7�Aallons per day per person, respectively. The sewage loading with a peak factor of 1.75 is 2800 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and a garbage grinder. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS A subsurface investigation was performed by digging one profile pit and three percolation holes, 19 to 22 inches deep, at the locations indicated on Figure 2. These percolation rates are consistent with other percolation tests performed by our firm in other areas of this building envelope. Percolation test results are included as Table 1. RECOMMENDATIONS The proposed OWS includes the installation a septic tank with effluent pumping system at the guest cabin, two septic tanks with dual effluent pumps at the main residence and a gravelless chamber -trench drain field, at the locations presented on Figure 2. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 1600 GPD and a percolation rate of 58 MPI. The installation must include one 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent pump in a BiotubeO pump vault at the guest cabin and one 2000 - gallon, single -compartment, precast concrete septic tank followed by one 1500 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with dual effluent pumps in a Biotube® pump vault at the main residence. The septic tank for the guest cabin may be up-sized. A gravelless chamber -trench drain field bed should be installed, as indicated on Figures 2 and 3. The drain field must have 10 rows of 14 chambers each for a total of 140 chambers and 2170 SF of infiltrative area. The pump at the guest cabin must have a total flow rate of 30.0 gallons per minute, and total dynamic head of 21.2 feet and the pumps at the main residence must have a total flow rate of 30.0 gallons per minute, and total dynamic head of 21.8 feet, each. Pump specifications are included as Figures 6 and 7. The septic tank specifications are based on minimum sizing criteria and may be over -sized if desired. Based on soil conditions, elevation difference, and evaluation of risk of contamination of surface water and ground water, it is not necessary to add 8 feet additional distance for each 100 gallons of wastewater per day of design flow over 1000 gallons per day as specified in the table to prevent contamination. The 50 - foot separation between the proposed absorption area and the irrigation ditch to the south is appropriate to prevent contamination. Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to minimize compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the trenches should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix should be sown at the drain field to re vegetate the surface. These minces do not require irrigation and may develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the field. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of, and assume responsibility for, ongoing maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring pro- gram, the septic tank should be pumped every two years or more frequently if needed. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping or as needed. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other non -biodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized to reduce the frequency of pumping. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet can use in excess of 1000 GPD. An additional 1000 GPD loading may flood and 'irreparably harm the system. The hydraulic loading from the backwash of a water softener is detrimental to an OWS and a separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. No landscaping or plastic can be used over the field, which will reduce performance of the field. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. The design of the OWS is based on the treatment of domestic sewage only. No industrial or hazardous wastes should be introduced into the OWS. LEW[TATIONS A contractor who is experienced in its installation must install an OWS design. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the change on the proposed OWS. If the health department modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations.
