The system was designed under our Job No. 16406, dated June 7, 2004. The system includes the installation of a 2000 -gallon, two-compartment, concrete septic tank with a pump in a Biotube® pump vault and a shallow trench drip irrigation drain field. The drain field was installed in eight 8 -foot by 90 -foot sections for a total of 5760 ft2 of infiltrative area. Distribution valves were installed to distribute effluent to the drain field. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1. The components of the OWS design were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications. Final electrical connections must be made by a licensed electrician. The construction foreman may activate the pumping system at his discretion. Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. (HP Geotech) performed a subsurface investigation under Job No. 403 349, dated October 30, 2003, and CHURCH & Associates, Inc. (CHURCH) performed additional percolation testing on May 27, 2004. SITE CONDITIONS The property is in a rural residential area of Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has a 15% to 20% slope to the north-northwest, and has full cover native grasses and sagebrush with scattered scrub oak. Water is provided by an onsite well located approximately 300 feet southwest of the proposed drain field area. The proposed drain field site is not in a confined drainage area and has moderate solar and wind exposure. The site is suitable for use of a drip irrigation or evapotranspiration -absorption (ETA) OWS. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION A three-bedroom residence with a living area less than 6000 square feet (ft2) is proposed at the location indicated on Figure 2. The OWS was sized based on 3 bedrooms and 600 gallons per day (GPD) using Pitkin County Environmental Health Department loading of 100 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 1050 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and garbage grinders. If additional bedrooms in unfinished areas are possible, it is suggested that the OWS be constructed to handle the additional loading. The installation of a properly engineered OWS to serve future build -out can be cost effective. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS The subsurface investigation was conducted by HP Geotech and CHURCH by drilling a profile hole and digging 8 percolation holes, 23 to 70 inches deep, at the locations presented on Figure 1. No ground water was present in the profile hole. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates ranging from 20 minutes per inch (MPI) to 240 MPI. The average percolation rate is 145 MPI. An application rate (AR) of 0.20 gallons per square foot per day (gal/ft /day) is appropriate for this percolation rate. The application rate utilizes slow soil absorption and evapotranspiration. Percolation data is presented in Table 1 and Appendix A. RECOMMENDATIONS The OWS installation includes a septic tank with an effluent pump and a dosed shallow trench drip irrigation drain field, as indicated on Figures 2 through 5. The OWS is designed on an application rate of 0.20 gallftZ/day and a sewage loading of 600 GPD. The installation must include one 2000 -gallon, two- compartment, concrete septic tank with an effluent pump in a Biotube® pump vault in the second compartment. Pump specifications are presented as Figure 5. The drain field installation must include 5760 ftz of drip -irrigation field in 8 sections as presented on Figures 2 and 3. The drip irrigation field configuration can be modified to fit the topography and preserve existing vegetation where possible. The trenches should be backfilled to reestablish the original slope._ Grading and/or retaining structures may be needed in drain field areas to achieve even distribution and separation to ground surface. If this is required, the topsoil should be removed prior to grading and replaced to promote revegetation. The surface of the drip irrigation or ETA field should be seeded after installation of the system. A native seed mix from the area available at seed stores should be used. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic irrigation system should be installed over the field. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. The system is relatively maintenance free, but the owner must have the septic tanks pumped and filters cleaned (hosed off). It is recommended the tank be pumped and filter cleaned every two years. There are daily considerations, such as not putting plastic or other non -biodegradable material into the system. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not al- lowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet will consume in excess of 1000 gallons per day if allowed to flow. An excess 1000 GPD loading could flood and irreparably harm the field. We caution against installation of a water softener. The hydraulic loading from the backwash of a water softener can be detrimental to OWS and a separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a water softener is installed. No landscaping or plastic can be used over the field, which will reduce evapotranspiration from the field. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced into the OWS. LIMITATIONS A drip irrigation design requires installation by a contractor who is an experienced installer. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described are encountered, we should evaluate the effect of the changes on the proposed OWS. Dear Mr. Throm: As requested, Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. has designed an Individual Sewage Disposal System (ISDS) for the proposed three bedroom residence at Lot 31, Sopris Mountain Ranch in Pitkin County Colorado. The study was conducted in accordance with our written agreement for engineering services to you dated October 29, 2003. The data obtained and our recommendations based on the proposed construction and subsurface conditions encountered are presented in this report. Percolation Testing: Percolation tests were conducted on October 14, 2003 to evaluate the percolation rate of the natural soils. One Profile Pit and four percolation test holes were excavated at the locations shown on Figure 1. The test holes (nominal 7 to 8 inches in diameter by about 14 inches deep) were hand dug at the bottom of shallow backhoe pits and were soaked a minimum of 8 hours prior to testing. The soils exposed in the Profile Pit are shown on the Log of Profile Pit, Figure 2, and consist of about 1 foot of topsoil overlying a sandy, silty clay to a depth of about 2 feet. The clay is underlain by a clayey, sandy gravel to about 3 feet which is underlain by a sandy clay to the depth explored. The soils exposed in the percolation test holes were similar to those exposed in the Profile Pit. The percolation tests were performed at depths ranging from about 19 to 70 inches below the adjacent ground surface. Given the wide range in percolation rates observed, we designed the system based upon an application rate of 0.22 gallons per square foot per day (gpd/sf) which correlates to a sandy clay loam as described in Table 4-3 of the EPA Onsite Wastewater Treatment System Manual, February 2002. ISDS Analysis: Based on the subsurface conditions encountered and the percolation test results, the tested area is suitable for an ISDS utilizing the shallow soils for the treatment and dispersal of effluent. The proposed absorption area is located topographically higher than the proposed residence and septic tank and a dosing pump will be required. A site plan showing the proposed ISDS, existing residence, property lines and the minimum horizontal distances of site features relative to the ISDS is shown on Figure 1. All materials and installation should meet the requirements of the Pitkin County Environmental Health Department's 2001 Revised ISDS Regulations. Septic and Dosing Tanks: The septic and dosing tanks will consist of a concrete 1,500 gallon, two chamber precast concrete tank and a 500 gallon precast concrete single chamber tank, or equivalent, respectively. The dosing tank will be equipped with float controlled dual submersible effluent pumps. The 1,500 gallon tank will be used for primary treatment of sewage from the residence. Sewage will gravity feed to the septic tank and then from the septic tank to the dosing tank where the effluent will be pumped to an Orenco Systems, Inc. 4403 automatic distributing valve installed at a high point near the absorption area. The submersible effluent pumps should be enclosed within a screen vault or an approved effluent filter and be installed on the outlet of the 500 gallon tank. Approved risers should be installed on the septic and dosing tanks access ports to allow easy access for maintenance. If the septic and dosing tank riser lids will be installed at grade, with no backfill cover, then the lids should be insulated to provide frost protection. A high water alarm should be installed in the dosing tank 3 to 6 inches above the upper float position. The basement has NOT been approved for any potential bedrooms. If any improvements are made to the unfinished basement, a building permit must be applied for and the septic system sizing should be assessed at that point. The plumbing improvements that have already been installed should have been taken into consideration with the sizing of the current septic system, but since it truly does not create a potential bedroom in itself, EH can sign off on the change order but stresses the system will need to be expanded to accommodate future bedrooms. The measured location must be accurate to 200 feet of the actual location. The location information must include either the 1/4, 1/4, Section, Township, Range, and distances from section lines, or a GPS location pursuant to the Division of Water Resources' guidelines.
