WORK SESSION ITEM:
SENIOR SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD—BUDGET PRESENTATION
Shellie Roy made a presentation to the Caucus detailing the financial status of the County. She covered the details of the
fiscal challenges we are facing and the reasons behind them. She also outlined the proposals for revenue generation. The
meeting then opened up for discussion. Issues raised by the public included the following
• Pitkin County charges too much to build a home
• Pitkin County encourages second home ownership because "normal"people can't afford the fees
• Stop letting people build big/expensive homes
• We need an industrial base in Pitkin County
• Taxation is unfair to those on fixed incomes
• Our homes are assessed by the sales of our neighbor's homes.
• Can the county raise the mil?
• Can we revive the commercial core?
• Make sure you limit the size of the private planes coming into Aspen
• Charge people more to land here
• How will Senior Services be affected? Is this a one-year plan? What if revenues go up?
• Are you eliminating all of the desirable services?
• What is the total sum of all those item listed in the desirable category? What happens to the desirable list if this is
passed?
• Why does open space get more money?
• Commissioners should support weed management
• What question will you ask in November?
• Why can you just raise the mil and keep the money? If we are growing why can't we grow our tax base?
• Can the county encourage development of motels?
• What is the county doing to encourage revitalization of our economy?
• The Ballot questions are our own worst enemy. Make sure you craft it so that it explains, in simple terms, what
will be lost.
• Education and listing what will be sacrificed will make sense to the voters.
• Two staff people would be a drastic blow for senior services
• Why fund catholic charities instead of senior services?
