WORK SESSION ITEM:
ASPEN SKIING COMPANY-CITIZEN ADVISORY BOARD-BUDGET PRESENTATION
Pat O'Donnell, CEO Aspen Skiing Company, opened the meeting and identified three agenda topics including
BOCC Budget Update, Market Program and Survey Tour and Aspen Retail Issues.
Mick Ireland made a presentation to the advisory board detailing the financial status of the County. He covered
how Pitkin County is financed, what led Pitkin County to this financial situation, why it is a long-term problem
and what service reductions the public can expect if there is no revenue increase. The meeting then opened up
for discussion. Issues raised by the public included the following
• When are cuts effective? -The BOCC suggested that the cuts will be effective January 1, 2003.
• What is the quickest you can put an initiative on the ballot? -August 13 and November 5`h
• My tax bill has doubled. What is the total increase in taxes since 1994? 67%
• What will August IP tax question save (services)? Has not been determined since it is only
$140,000.
• How does the August question read? Mick reviewed the question and explained the Fenton and Tabor
issues.
• You should be as specific as possible about the dooms day scenario. What does it look like if it
doesn't pass and what does it look like if it passes? Then the public can decide if they want to buy
the services you have put on the list.
• You should get the information out to the public.
• The County should pursue more corporate efficiencies. When corporations run into trouble they
can't ask for tax dollars, they have to trim and be creative. The public won't want to give up their
hard earned money until they perceive that they are getting something back.
• We (ski co) need help increasing revenues to help revive the community, like in the base village.
• Can the County find a better way to provide services without a tax increase?
Pat O'Donnell offered to "download"this information to his management team. Mick volunteered to do a
presentation to Ski Co staff if possible.
