If approval takes longer than 6 hours, a rate of $55 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time of application. All of the components of the system had been installed, but no backfilling had taken place. The installation of the system was in conformance with the intent of the design, however, the type of absorption bed was changed from Infiltrator units to a standard gravel bed. According to Steve of Rudd Construction, Tim approved the modification in the leach field design and inspected the system 6-2-98. The existing septic system must be decommissioned. The septic tank must be pumped & then either filled with dirt, crushed, or crushed and taken to the landfill. It is this Department's understanding that the leach field will be removed to the landfill. Box 568 Snowmass, CO 81654 Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Tests for Replacement Individual Sewage for the Commercial Parcel Buildings of Parcels of Land situated in Tracts 55 and 64, Sections 17, 20, and 21, Township 8 South, Range 86 West of the 6th P.M., numbered as 24825 Highway 82 Dear Ed and Cherie, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., has performed a soils study and percolation testing in order to design a replacement septic system for the existing residential and office buildings at the subject site. We conducted this study according to Article 5 of the Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulation ation on Thursday, April 16, 1998. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered at that time. Along with your engineer's plans for the design of the onsite wastewater system, please furnish the attached permit application and related information, this letter and a copy of the enclosed data sheets to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department in order to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Existing Commercial Parcel Construction and Site: The 4.423 -acre part of these tracts is proposed to be split and become a separate commercial property. Currently this parcel has five buildings on it. The greenhouse, open stable, and frame garage are not habitable. As you have shown us, there are three employee dwelling units with a total of six bedrooms in the front of the shop building. In addition, in the two-story open storage/frame office building to the east side of the property, there is another upstairs dwelling unit and the first floor office with a bathroom used by 3 or 4 employees during a regular eight hour workday. As we understand, the existing septic system for these buildings will need to be removed from the right-of-way when Highway 82 is soon widened in this area. A new system is required. To conform to current requirements we have assumed the following wastewater flows from the existing employee dwelling units and the office. It certainly appears possible to provide a replacement system in the area available on the property. Existing Onsite Sewage System: A conventional 1250 -gallon septic tank and an 864 square foot seepage bed constructed in 1976 currently serve this part of the property. The seepage bed is partly located under the berm and close to the South property line. We have previously furnished you with a copy of the County septic permit for these buildings, which includes a rough as -built drawing of the current septic system placement. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile pit, excavated earlier by either the geotechnical engineers or the Colorado Department of Transpiration, within the area considered suitable for an additional on-site wastewater disposal system absorption field, was dug to a depth of approximately ten feet. As we understand and believe, this excavation revealed that no groundwater or solid bedrock encountered to that depth. The first few inches of the percolation test excavations revealed a thin layer of topsoil. At depths below the topsoil and to a depth of four feet, the subsoil consisted of a red fine sandy to silty loam and a few small, fractured sandstone fragments, the final twelve to sixteen inches of the subsoil was a lighter reddish sandy and gravely loam with a few loose cobble fragments below a depth of four feet in the excavations. Percolation Testin¢: The subsurface soil conditions were reevaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were excavated to a depth anticipating the installation of a level Infiltratorrm seepage and were dug to four and one-half to five feet, approximately the same elevation as the bottom of the proposed replacement absorption area. The test holes were prepared by hand -digging a twelve -inch diameter hole to a depth of sixteen inches in the bottom, of three backhoe pits excavated to a depth of four feet. Three inches of gravel were placed in each test hole after all loose soil had been removed and the test hole sidewalls roughened. The test hole preparation avoided smearing the soil surfaces and removed loose cobble in the sidewall and bottoms of the holes. 11 Percolation Tests to Establish Criteria for a Replacement Individual Sewage System Mountain West Trees Commercial Parcel 24825 Highway 82 05/14/98 Page 3 The percolation holes were pre-soaked by adding water to a depth of fourteen inches above the gravel layer the morning before the test measurements were performed and at regular intervals throughout the day. Water was added every hour or two for eight hours during the day before the percolation test measurements were done. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the sandy clay loam soils had an average percolation rate of 27 minutes per inch. Soils with percolation rates in this range are considered suitable and are acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the replacement on-site sewage system. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to information supplied by the property owner and the generally accepted practices in this area used for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation, if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so that we may reevaluate our recommendations.
