The perc rate was 16 minutes to the inch at the bottom of the dry well,
about 12 feet under the surface of the ground. Unfortunately, it is a basement
installation, which precludes the installation of a leech Yield. The septic
tank is set about 6 feet under the ground already, and the back hoe operator
is going about as deep as he possibly can with a 15 foot square hole. This
gives us an effective absorption area of about 370-370 square feet, which is
far short of the required minimum for this particular property (800 ft. deep).
My recommendation would be to tie the washing machine into the mal-
functioning system and this would promote the better breakdown in the septic
tank and also allow an area reduction of about 40% from the minimum requirements.

Conference re: Malfunctioning dry well
This particular dry well is tied into a septic tank set roughly 6 feet
under the surface of the ground already. We discussed a number of options
including replacing a metal septic tank and adding a new dry well and the
options and requirements for such.

Conference. He wanted to know what was necessary for a sewage
disposal system repair permit. There is a problem with the system. He indicated
he had a metal tank, which I requested be pumped and carefully examined to
determine both treatment capacity and condition, particularly in the outlet
baffle. He indicated to me that he thought maybe the tank was installed backwards
to begin with, which I didn't really see as feasible cause of mal -function, but
we'll be able to tell once he gets the tank uncovered and get a look at it.
Inasmuch as he's very deep already with basement plumbing coming into the system,
typical of the installations in the Samuelson Subdivision, at about 6 feet
below the surface of the ground at which point the leach field almost becomes
impractical.
We've had reasonably good perc ratesoyn to a depth of about 12 feet
on other lots and this may be the approach wec have to take in getting this
one repaired. Because it is a duplex, we might have to get into another situation
with replacement of the septic tank, but I really can't say until we get
further along in the situation.
