If approval takes longer than 6 hours, a rate of $65 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit; second, before final approval of the ISDS permit. Application for an individual sewage disposal system is hereby submitted. The work was done as a supplement to our previous study conducted for Schlumberger Construction dated August 10, 1998, Job No. 198 178-1. We previously conducted a subsoil study for foundation design at the residence site west of Lower River Road and presented our findings in a report dated March 31, 1998, Job No. 198178. A profile pit and three percolation test holes had been excavated within the designated septic disposal system area prior to our arrival as shown on Figure 1. The subsoils exposed in the Profile Pit, below about llh feet of topsoil, consisted of 2'/x feet of stiff sandy silty clay overlying medium dense clayey sand and gravel with scattered cobbles to the bottom pit depth of 10 feet. No free water was observed in the pit and the soils were slightly moist to moist. Percolation test holes had been hand dug in the bottom of the three shallow backhoe pits and soaked with water by the client on April 14, 2003. Pitkin County was notified for inspection of the Profile Pit. Percolation testing was conducted on April 15, 2003, by a representative of Hepworth - Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. The percolation test results are summarized on Table 1. Percolation test results indicate infiltration rates between 15 and 40 minutes per inch with an average of 32 minutes per inch. The soils exposed in the percolation test holes varied from silty sandy clay to clayey sand and gravel. Based on the subsurface conditions encountered and the percolation test results, the tested area should be suitable for a conventional infiltration septic disposal system. Lulu Subdivision, 2527 Lower River Road, Pitkin County, Colorado SE .Job No. 23026.01 Dear Marty: Pursuant to your request, attached herewith is a letter/report presenting our findings in regard to the design of an Onsite Wastewater System (OWS) at the above referenced Site. This design is based on our evaluation of the site conditions with information provided by others for use in supporting your application to Pitkin County. Our recommendations are in accordance with Pitkin County and the State of Colorado ISDS Regulations. Pitkin County must permit any proposed improvement to the site. We have reviewed the information forwarded to us, conducted a site visit, formulated an OWS design and created a site plan with construction details as part of our scope of work. Conclusions Based on our findings we believe that the design and installation of an approved OWS, to serve a proposed barn/accessory dwelling unit on your residential property, is feasible in accordance with the Regulations of Pitkin County and the State of Colorado. We recommend that anew 1000 gallon septic tank be installed that will discharge effluent to a 300 square foot soil absorption trench system. The soil absorplion system can be installed in natural soils and will be located within the current building envelope down gradient of the proposed barn/ADU, as delineated on the attached plan. The system will meet all required setbacks and be installed within the general boundaries indicated on the plan. Our design is outlined below and delineated on the attached site plan. Site Location The subject site is located at Lot 2, Lulu Subdivision, 2527 Lower River Road, near Woody Creek, in Pitkin County, Colorado. The Site comprises over 35 acres with an approximate 1.8 -acre building envelope that will accommodate the proposed absorption field for the ADU. The site is bounded by undeveloped Agricultural lands and scattered residential acreages along Lower River Road. Existine Site Conditions The site is located on agricultural land. The site has slopes (6-10%) generally toward the Southwest. The existing ground surface in the proposed septic area is an area with an approximate slope of 6.5%, The site is covered with pasture grasses. Domestic water is supplied by an existing water well. The site has been historically irrigated. The proposed absorption field is located in excess of 500 feet away from the well location and in excess of 200' from any irrigation ditch. 502 Main Street • Suite A3 • Carbondale. The maximum number of rooms to be utilized as a bedroom is 1. The minimum size of the new OWS shall be based on an equivalent 2 -bedroom home. Therefore the system is designed to handle the flow from an equivalent 2 -bedroom hoose.' The proposed improvements will include a new OWS system with appropriate site grading. The new structure is to be generally located in the location shown on the plan. %ve bc�c�d C7Y 106 01 -t- Subsurface Conditions 3kOT4sc C hU S I- )01-t i S, A subsurface investigation and percolation test was conducted on April 15, 2003 by Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc (HP). The results are attached in the HP report dated April 18, 2003, lob Number 198 178-1. The subsoil encountered at the site consists of 1 '/2 foot of topsoil overlying 2'/2 feet of stiff sandy silty clay overlying clayey sand and gravel with scattered cobbles to the maximum depth explored in the profile pit of 10 feet. Groundwater was not encountered in the test profile pit. Percolation testing utilized three test holes, which yielded the following absorption rates. The fastest measured rate was 15 minutes per inch and the slowest measured rate was 40 minutes per inch. The average percolation rate is 32 minutes per inch and is suitable for a conventional absorption system. Desitin Criteria The proposed residence is a 1 -bedroom caretaker unit. The design flow is calculated as follows: The new ISDS shall be based on a minimum of 2 -bedrooms for a structure 700 S.F. or larger. Install with risers to the surface. Insure that the tank and risers are water tight. Install an inlet tee baffle and an outlet tee baffle with an effluent filter. The effluent filter shall have an accessible handle. 04/24/2003 14:28 970-704-0313 • Percolation Test Results SOPRIS ENGINEERING • PAGE 04 Marty Schlumberger SE lob No. 23026.01 April 22, 2003 Page 3 The results of percolation tests indicated the average percolation rate of 32 minutes per inch is within acceptable ranges for conventional absorption systems as required by Pitkin County regulations. The field is sized by using the standard absorption area equation based on the design flow and a percolation rate of 32 mpi. A soil absorption trench system, utilizing gravelless leaching chambers is recommended. Pitkin County allows a 50% reduction in the size of a trench system utilizing gravelless leaching chambers. Soil Absorution System DesiZn Based upon the percolation test rates, the standard absorption area equation is: A (SF) = 0*(t) h : where A = Area; Q = flow (gal/day) 5 t = time in minutes This design calculation results in a recommended minimum absorption area: A = 525 *(32) " = 600 sq. ft. 5 Apply a 50% reduction for utilizing gravelless leaching chambers. A = 600 sq. ft. (0.50) = 300 sq. ft. Assume 15.5 square feet per chamber: 300 sq.ft. = 19 chambers 15.5 sq.ft/chamber Use 21 chambers Use a 300 sf of absorption area with 21 gravelicss leaching chambers: We recommend using a trench system composed of 3 trenches containing 7 standard infiltration chamber units in each row. Equal distribution is recommended by use of a distribution box. We recommend that each trench be connected with individual distribution lines coming from a distribution box. Each trench is to be constmcted level, however each succeeding trench may be stepped down in elevation with respect to existing grades. A minimum of 6 feet of undisturbed earth shall separate individual trenches. The trenches shall be constructed not to exceed a maximum depth of 3 feet. An inspection port should be installed on the top mid -point cutout at each end chamber in the trench row. This will allow for checking the performance of the system over time. Effluent Distribution S stem A gravity distribution system will be utilized to transport effluent from the septic tank to the absorption trench chambers. An effluent filter will he installed in the secondary compartment of the septic tank to reduce potential suspended solids and biological loading to the absorption trenches. A 4" discharge line will discharge effluent to a distribution box installed up -gradient and adjacent to the trenches. The 4" PVC effluent discharge line will be installed with a minimum 1% slope. The effluent will be equally distributed from the distribution box through individual distribution pipes to each trench. The distribution pipes will connect to the head of each chamber row. A splash plate shall be installed on the trench bottom surface below the inlet. Construction and Inspections Prior to construction of the permitted system the engineer should be contacted well in advance to provide adequate time to discuss the system components with the contractor, answer questions, resolve any conflict issues and schedule inspection site visits based on construction progress. We highly recommend that the contractor/installer contact the engineer to discuss the ISDS system, and construction schedule prior to construction. County Regulations require that the Design Engineers of record perform site inspections of the permitted system during construction and provide "As -Built" documentation of the installed system to the County after construction is complete. The Regulations further require site inspections and approval by the County Environmental Health Department of the exposed components of the system prior to backfilling. Therefore the County Environmental Health Department should also be contacted and notified of the construction schedule. ISDS Operation and Maintenance A properly designed and utilized ISDS system should require minimal maintenance. Several factors influencing the need for maintenance include: actual wastewater flows versus design flows, the volume of kitchen/domestic waste (excluding human waste and toilet paper), excessive household chemicals or other toxic liquids and the physical integrity of the system components. It is recommended that the septic tank, absorption field and inspection ports should be inspected annually. The tank, effluent fillet and other applicable components sbould be visually inspected Bi -annually for debris, wear, damage, leaks, or other potential problems. In general, for a properly utilized system, septic tanks should be pumped and inspected every 2 - 4 years. The effluent filter should be cleaned every six months and at the time of pumping. Absorption fields should be maintained with suitable cover and kept free of root invasive plants. Positive surface drainage away from the absorption field should be maintained. General Notes 1) All materials and installation practices shall conform to the Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal Regulation. 2) All sewer lines and distribution lines in the system shall be 4" Schedule 40 or SDR -35 PVC unless specified otherwise on the plans. 3) Add a two-way clean out on the service line from the proposed residence. 4) The system shall be plumbed to provide equal effluent distribution into the trenches. 5) The contractor shall ensure that the concrete septic tank and sewer lines are watertight. 6) The absorption field area must be protected to prevent damage from vehicular or livestock traffic and must be crowned to divert drainage runoff away from the trenches to minimize surface infiltration. 7) The leaching chambers shall be installed level in the trenches. A splash plate shall be installed on the trench bottom surface below the inlet in each row to prevent scouring from the effluent. The top of the backfill over the chambers shall be covered with filter fabric or other suitable pervious material to prevent the migration of fines from the overlying topsoil layer. 04/24/2003 14:28 970-704-0313 0 SOPRIS ENGINEERING • PAGE 06 Marty Schlumberger SE Job No. 23026.01 April 22, 2003 Page 5 8) The trenches must have a minimum cover of 12 inches. A final cover of topsoil, suitable for vegetation, a minimum 4" deep, shall be placed from the top of the pervious cover layer to the finished surface grade. 9) The absorption trenches must be sodded or covered with vegetative ground cover. Our design and recommendations are based upon data supplied to us by others. If subsurface or site conditions are found to be different from those presented in this report, we should be notified to evaluate the effect it may have on the proposed ISDS. If the County Enviromnental Health Department requests changes or modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the effect on the ISDS. AN EFFLUENT FILTER SHALL BE INSTALLED ON THE DISCHARE TEE IN THE SECONDARY COMPARTMENT OF THE 1000 GAL. SEPTIC TANK. FILTERED EFFLUENT WILL DISCHARGE TO A DISTRIBUTION BOX. EFFLUENT WILL BE EQUALLY DISTRIBUTED TO THE ABSORPTION TRENCHES VIA INDIVIDUAL 4" DISTRIBUTION LINES. 2. THE MINIMUM SLOPE OF THE DISCHARGE LINE FROM THE TANK TO THE FLOW SPLITTER BASIN SHALL SHALL BE INSTALLED AT A MINIMUM 2% SLOPE. THE INDIVIDUAL DISTRIBUTION LINES SHALL BE INSTALLED AT A MINIMUM OF 2% SLOPE. ALL DISTRIBUTION PIPING, CONNECTIONS AND FITTINGS SHALL BE TIGHT AND INSTALLED TO INSURE EQUAL DISTRIBUTION THROUGH THE SYSTEM. 4.
