Please call Wm. Howell ,9273656 in old Smass. Gateway Mesa. He has a
permit to install, but wants to reduce the size of his development
now. This may reduce the size of his leach field. It is the house at
the top of the subdivision next to Susan Murphy's. He was going to
install infiltrator. Permit application should be in Alpha file.
Thank you

Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual
Sewage System Design for Lot 3, Block 3, Filing 2, Gateway to
Snowmass Mesa Subdivision, numbered as 1591 Gateway Road
Dear William,
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd.,
performed a soils study and percolation testing for design of an
additional septic system for the proposed addition to the residence
at the subject site. This study was conducted in accordance with
Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations On-site Sewage Disposal
Systems on Wednesday, May 12, 1993. The data obtained and our
recommendations are based on the proposed construction and
subsurface conditions encountered are presented in this report.
Proposed Construction:
The proposed -caretaker residence will have a single bedroom and
bathroom. We understand that you plan to incorporate the following
features into the construction project:
1) A 1.6 -gallon flush toilet for the caretaker unit.
2) A laundry facility for both the existing main residence
and the caretaker unit.
Site Conditions:
4
The site is a lot in the upper portion of Filing 2 of the Gateway
to Snowmass Mesa Subdivision. A multi -tiered residential structure
was constructed on the property in the late 1970's with a typical
on-site sewage system for the three-bedroom residence. An
inspection of the sewage disposal system site indicated that the
existing septic tank - absorption bed system is functioning as
designed.
The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of
the additional absorption field, slopes rather steeply to the south
at about a 25% grade. There are several natural drainages in the
area, the most predominate one about 100 feet easterly of the
building envelope. The drainages were dry. Mancos shale outcrops
on the top of the hill above the residence and on the ridge to the
east of the site where the subdivision road ends in a cul-de-sac.
Subsurface Conditions:
A soil profile pit, within 50 feet of the proposed absorption area,

was excavated when the original permit work was done in 1979. That
excavation revealed that no groundwater or bedrock was present
within eight feet of the surface of the ground.
The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard
percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on
Figure 1. The test holes were excavated prior to our arrival at
the site. In general, the subsoil consisted of colluvium derived
from weathering and erosion of the hillside deposits. There was
only a very thin layer of organic topsoil. Below that a silty clay
with large amounts of shale fragments was encountered. The soils
were not well consolidated.
Percolation Testing:
Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench
area south of the building site, set by staking and string. This
testing was performed in two hand dug holes. The percolation holes
had been excavated earlier and pre-soaked the evening before and
the morning of our testing. A layer of gravel was placed in the
bottom of each test hole.
The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I.
These results indicate the soils have a percolation rate of 5 to 10
minutes per inch and should be acceptable for a conventional
infiltration design for the additional on-site sewage system.
Limitations: This report has been prepared in accordance with
generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage
disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations
submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from oitr site
visits at the locations indicated on Figure 1. There is a
possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the
subsurface soils across the site may not be evident and may need
further evaluation if excavation reveals conditions different from
those described. This office should be advised of these situations
as soon as possible so reevaluation of our recommendations can be
done.
If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please
call the office.
Sincerely, ReviE
