CO 81654 ASPEN/PITKIN Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Tests for an Individual Sewage System for a Barn, Agricultural Building, and Detached Caretaker Unit at the Kirianoff Residence Located on a Tract of Land in Section 21, Township 8 South, Range 85 West of the 6th P. M., numbered as 0099 Lower River Road Dear Pat and Greg, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation tests necessary for design a septic system for the proposed barn and detached caretaker residence. We conducted this study in accordance with Article 5 of the Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulation. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. We will furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at our earliest convenience so that they may specify minimum design requirements and issue a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Proposed Construction: The proposed barn is to be a frame agricultural building of 4000 square feet with one bathroom and seven horse stalls. Contained in the barn is to be a one bedroom caretaker unit of approximately 700 square feet. Site Conditions: The property is a developed parcel of approximately 110 acres along the Roaring Fork River in Snowmass, Colorado. There is an existing residence on a portion of the property. The drinking water to the barn is to be provided from the existing well. The road and access drives are constructed to the property and the barn. The barn building site is on a portion of the lot located above a large meadow and just below the County Trail. It is approximately five hundred feet from and forty feet above the Roaring Fork River. The upper part of the lot is covered with some scrub oak brush and grass. The lower part of the lot is primarily irrigated meadow. There are several irrigation ditches in the area, and the closest is just below the pad for the agricultural P.O. All ditches in the area are proposed to be lined with a large ADS corrugated culvert. The ground surface of the barn site appears natural throughout the proposed area of building and within the site of the absorption field. The ground slopes to the Southwest at a 10% grade in this area. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile pit was excavated to a depth of approximately nine and one-quarter feet. The profile excavation was done about thirty feet below the staked barn site, across the major irrigation ditch. No groundwater was encountered and bedrock was not present within the top nine feet of the surface of the ground. The top five inches of the profile excavation was a reddish, brown fine sandy loam topsoil. Below the topsoil to a depth of 95 inches, the substratum was a reddish brown fine sandy loam of relatively uniform consistency. The sandy loam exhibited some slight smearing and compaction from the pressure of earthmoving equipment, and appeared to be somewhat expansive. Below a depth of 95 inches the reddish sand loam was intermixed with some gravel and cobble and was more calcareous. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedure at the approximate location shown on Figure 1 and Inset A. The subsoil in which the percolation testing was conducted consisted of a reddish brown fine sandy loam. The soil was well consolidated and showed a tendency to swell. Percolation Testing: Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption area West of the excavated area of the barn building site and horse arena. The shallow holes were dug with an posthole digger to a depth of thirty inches. The test holes were cleaned out with hand tools and gravel was placed on the bottom of each hole. We pre-soaked the percolation test holes by adding water approximately eight hours before starting the percolation test measurements. The test holes were refilled every two hours thereafter until evening. No water remained in any of the percolation test holes after each of the initial presoaking periods. 0 Kirianoff Barn and Caretaker Unit Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for an Individual Sewage System 0099 Lower River Road December 20, 1995 Page 3 The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. The results indicate the fine sandy loam subsoil has a percolation rate of 9 minutes per inch. This soil is considered acceptable for a conventional infiltration trench design for the on-site sewage system. Limitations: This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation, if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluate our recommendations. If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the office. Sincerely, V/ 7 4r' Robert F. Nelson President Reviewed By: Ole" ay ammond, P.E.
