The permit and record drawing was provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (Parcel ID #2467-273-02-001). The subject OWTS consists of one 2000 -gallon, two-compartment concrete septic tank followed by a 1000 -gallon, single -compartment concrete septic tank with a pump. The absorption area consists of a pressurized gravelless chamber bed with six rows of 13 Standard Infiltrator® chambers for a total of 1209 square feet of infiltrative area (using 15.5 square feet per chamber). The septic tanks are located in a landscaped area to the east of the residence. The only lid accessible from grade was the outlet of the second tank. B&R Septic personnel uncovered the remaining lids for the inspection. The inlet side manhole lid of the 2000 -gallon septic tank is partially covered by a heated stone patio. Access to this side of the tank was minimal and the inlet tee was not able to be verified. The outlet side of the tank was uncovered and an outlet tee was present. We recommend adding an effluent filter to this tee. If a filter is added, it must be cleaned annually, or as needed. B&R Septic did not believe that the inlet side of the single compartment 1000 -gallon tank was brought to grade, so this manhole lid was not uncovered. The outlet manhole lid of the second tank in series was accessible from grade. A pump, replaced in July 2011, was present and the alarm was tested. The control panel is located in the crawl space. A sprinkler box was installed over the access to the inlet side of the 2000 -gallon septic tank for accessibility from grade. A riser was also added to the outlet side of this septic tank for access from grade. Sludge and scum levels in the septic tanks were measured during the inspection. There was approximately 12+ inches of sludge in the first compartment of the first tank. The pump chamber had approximately 6 -inches of sludge. We recommend pumping both septic tanks prior to the property transaction. Photographs taken during installation of the system are included in this report. The 2000 -gallon septic tank appears to have a mid -seam. Both septic tanks were installed in groundwater. The absorption area appears to be located under an irrigated yard area. We recommend minimizing irrigation over the absorption area. Although inspection ports were noted on the engineer drawings, 3 0 0 none were observed at the time of the inspection, limiting our ability to assess the condition of the absorption area. The absorption area showed no signs of surface saturation, and had no indication of failure at the time of the inspection. This evaluation is not a guarantee of future system performance. This inspection is good for one year. Recommendations: • Add effluent filter to outlet side of first tank. If filter is added, this filter must be cleaned annually, or as needed. We recommend the Orenco® Biotube Jr. Effluent Filter. • Minimize irrigation over absorption area. • Pump septic tanks.
