Both tanks are to be two-compartment concrete with an effluent filter. The absorption field is design to be five trenches with 16 gravelless chambers in each trench for a total of 80 units. There is to be a minimum of 6 ft of undisturbed soil between trenches. The engineer must do a final inspection of the installation and submit an as -built letter to this department. If approval takes longer than 6 hours, a rate of $55 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit: second, before final approval of the ISDS permit. The system was designed under our Job No. 11812, dated October 26, 1999, and revised November 24, 1999. The installed OWS for the four-bedroom residence and caretaker unit includes two septic tanks with effluent filters and eight chamber -trenches. One 2500 -gallon, two-compartment precast concrete septic tank and one 1000 -gallon, two-compartment precast concrete septic tank with effluent filters added to the outlets were placed at individual structures, as indicated on Figure 1. Eight chamber -trenches, each with one row of ten chambers were installed, for a total area of 1240 square feet (SF). A distribution box was added to evenly distribute effluent to the trenches. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1. The components of the OWS were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications. This design should be used in conjunction with our original report, dated November 24, 1999. Our firm investigated subsurface conditions on November 18, 1999. EMSTI(NG AND PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION A fora -bedroom YeWo oa and tato-bedroom caretaker unit/guest house exist at the site. The original loading was determined based on individual detached structures. The main house, which has greater than 6000 SF and 4 bedrooms, required a loading of 130 GPD/person and resulted in an average loading of 1040 GPD. The guesthouse, which has less than 2000 SF and 2 bedrooms, required a loading of 75 GPD/person and resulted in an average loading of 300 GPD. The design flow was 2345 GPD. The existing OWS consists of two septic tanks with a total of 3500 gallons followed by 1240 SF of graveness chamber -trench absorption area A one -bedroom barn with a living area of 392 square feet (SF) is proposed at the location presented on Figure I We propose to incorporate the new bam into the existing OWS. The proposed barn has a living arra less than 700 SF ("392 SF), 1 bedroom, and an average sewage loading of 150 GPD. The average sewage loading of the combined facility is 1490 GPD and 2608 GPD with a peaking fdctor of 1.75. This loading includes a dishwasher, garbage grinder. and washing machine. The residence is served by an onsite well located 228+ feet from the proposed drain field. SUBSURFACE CONDMONS The subsurface investigation consisted of digging 8 percolation holes, 26 to 36 inches deep and two profile pits at the locations indicated oil Figure 1. Subsurface conditions in Profile 1 consisted of 1 foot of sparse topsoil underlain by silty, clayey sand, with large cobble to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. Subsurface conditions in Profile 2 consisted of a sandy root zone to 1 foot, underlain by silty, clayey sand with large cobble to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. No ground water was observed in the test pits. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 8 to 20 minutes per inch (MPl). The !Tgraded design require07-64 of infiltrative area, with a 50% reduction for the use of trenches, 3259 gallons of septic tank capacity. Existing septic tank capacity includes a 2500-gaflon septic tank and a 1000 -gallon septic tank followed by 1240 SF of gravelless chamber -trench absorption area The excess tank capacity built into the ctosting system was based on available tank sizes. The adequacy of the trenches is based on a change in regulations, which allows a 500/6 reduction with the use of trenches- We believe the existing OWS is sufficient to treat the additional sewage from the proposed 1 -bedroom bam. The installation must include a flinch PVC sewer line with a cleanout, connected to the existing 1000 - gallon, two-compartmcrrt, precast concrete septic tank at the 2 -bedroom barn, as indicated on Figure 1. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for continued maintenance of the system In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is iaaalled. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or Was should not be introduced to the OWS. LIMITATIONS A contractor, who is experienced in its irtstallation, should install the OWS design. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those dmribed in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. The revision is based on the relocation of the drain field. Our firm investigated subsurface conditions on November 18, 1999. The revis- ion includes a letter, three figures, Figures 1 through 3, and a continuation of the percolation table. Please remove the appropriate original documents to avoid confusion. SITE CONDITIONS - The parcel is located in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, Colorado. The proposed drain field area has a gentle slope of 2-3% to the west. There is a moderate cover of native grasses in the proposed field area. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION - A four-bedroom residence greater than 6000 square feet (SF) and a two-bedroom caretaker unit/guest house are proposed at the locations presented on Figure 1. We are sizing the OWS based on 6 bedrooms and 1340 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department (APEIID) loading of 130 and 75 gallons per day per person. The loading was determined based on individual detached structures. The main house, which has greater than 6000 SF, is proposed to have 4 bedrooms which requires using a loading of 130 GPD/person and results in a design loading of 1850 GPD. The guest house has less than 2000 SF and is proposed as 2 bedrooms, so loading was based on 75 GPD/person with a 525 GPD design load. The total sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 2345 GPD. This loading includes a dishwasher, garbage grinder, and washing machine. The residence will be served by an onsite well located 208/feet from the proposed drain field. Revised OWS Design Job No. 11812 Page 2 There are irrigated fields to the west, which were wet at the time of our investigation. It does not appear the area of the proposed drain field trenches is affected by the irrigation based on the current dryness of the soil and the sparse surface vegetation. If this property will be irrigated in the future, mounding of the drain field should be considered. RECOMMENDATIONS - We recommend the OWS include installation of two septic tanks, effluent 3 Vol filters, and five chamber -trenches at the locations presented on Figure 1. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 2345 GPD and a percolation rate of 14 MPI. We recommend the installation of one S00 -gallon two co �nLseptic tank at the main house and one 1460 -gallon two-compartment )•ZIS concrete septic tank at the guest house with an effluent filter on the outlet, as indicated on Figure 1. A distribution box with Flow equalizers should be installed to distribute effluent among the beds. We recom- mend the installation of five chamber -trenches, each with 1 row of 16 chambers. The proposed OWS is not oversized for section rotation and rotation should not be done. `=4"v ✓ ^3 �� Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to prevent compaction of the receiving soils. We recommend the bottom of the bed be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of infiltrators. We recommend the surface of the field be seeded after installation of the fields. We recommend using a native seed mix available at seed stores. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. If this specific property is to be irrigated for agricultural purposes in the future, the water may impact the OWS. If irrigation is anticipated, we can modify our OWS design to a "mound" to accommodate a higher ground water level. There is no indication of ground water impacting the proposed drain field by current adjacent irrigation.
