This septic permit is approved as an owner/builder design dated July 30, 2002. Any changes must be approved by
this department prior to them being made. Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and
physical features shall conform to the Pitkin County ISDS regulations.

The design is for a minimum 1750 gallon two compartment septic tank. No alteration to the tank is allowed. Sewage
from the house will gravity feed to this tank. Effluent from
the tank will then be pumped from a pumping tank up to a series of gravelless chamber beds with serial distribution
down the slope. A 30% reduction is taken for use of infiltrator in a bed configuration. There will be a total of 76
chambers.
This department does not endorse any brand of products. This permit must be kept on-site during installation.
This department must also be called for an inspection with a minimum of 48 hours advanced notice. An inspection
of the pump operation will be required.

Plans and specifications of the pro osed individual sewage disposal system have been reviewed and are considered
satisfactory. Permission is hereby granted to the owner or the agent to perform the work indicated in accordance with the Pitkin
County ISDS Regulation in effect at the time of issue. This permit becomes invalid 6 months from the date that the permit was
issued unless system construction has commenced or an extension has been approved in writing by the Department.
As -built drawings must be included with this permit before the final approval will be issued.

The fee for a ISDS application is $330 for a permit that takes 6 hours or less for the department to approve -if approval takes
longer than 6 hours, a rale of $65 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time
of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit; second, before
final approval of the ISDS permit.
Application for an individual sewage dispose syslem3hereby submitted. I hereby certify that the above information is true and
accurate and that I have provided true and accurate information on locations of all existing and proposed wells, contour
intervals, buildings, property lines, ditches, slopes, waterlines, springs, suction or irrigation lines, drinking water cisterns, drain
tiles, irrigation ditches, lakes, water courses, streams, floodplains, dry gulches, and existing septic systems. I hereby certify
that any such features not shown on attached site map are not present. Issuance of the permit does not imply the approval of
any other permit required for construction pursuant to Pitkin County codes. No construction may be undertaken until all
approvals and permits have been obtained.
The Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department, Pitkin County and employees of these agencies will be held harmless
should the individual sewage disposal system fail or malfunction. The permit to construct is issued on information submitted by
the applicant or his/her representatives. The owner assumes full responsibility in case of failure of the system.

As per our correspondence to you on July 6, 2004 and November 2, 2004 as well as on
November 9, 2004, the Environmental Health & Natural Resources Department would
like to remind you that we are still unable to complete the processing of the Individual
Sewage Disposal System (ISDS) permit for the above stated residence/property.
It is mandatory that our office receives an "As Built" letter from the engineer who
designed the system. The letter will confirm that they observed the installation of the
system as designed. Any changes to the system must be noted in the letter or by a new
set of plans. The Building Department will not issue a Certificate of Occupancy for this
property until they are notified that the ISDS permit process is complete.
This office must receive the "As Built" letter no later than February 20, 2006.

Re: Additional Information: Septic leachfield bed design for Hill/Karolides House.
Dear Ms. McKenzie,
In follow up to our phone conversation yesterday, please review this proposed
improvement to our septic design.
After surveying our lot now that our house and garage/art studio structures are underway,
we note that we have enough fall to run a gravity line from the garage/art studio to the
septic tank.
We are planning to install the discharge sewer line from the art studio just below the
elevation of the secondfloor of the garage building. This elevation is 1033 and the septic
system will be located where the natural grade is 1031 (and buried below that elevation)
as shown on the accompanying drawing. The sewage has to travel 60 feet at a slope of
1/4 inch per foot, so it needs to drop 15 inches This is more than enough fall for a gravity
flow line and we therefore propose eliminating the sewage pump chamber that had been
designed to take the sewage from the garage/art studio to the septic tank.

Septic System Design for Hill/Karolides House
The following calculations were based on the Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal System
Regulation, produced by the Aspen Environmental Health Department.
Calculations:
Design Flow, Q = 4 bedroom house x 2 persons/bedroom = 8 persons x 100 gal/day = 800 gal/day x 175%
=1400 gal/day
Septic Tank Vol = 1400 gal/day x 1.25 =1750 gal
Leach Area, A = =1680 SF, where t = avg perk rate. From HP Geotech reports
(attached), for perk test holes #2-5 (note that perk hole #1 was not within the leach field
area) the average perk rate is 1/4(30+40+28+45) = 36 min/in.
We are using the Infiltrator system in a series of bed systems; therefore we can reduce the required leach
area by 30%i.
Reduced A =1680 SF x 0.7 =1176 SF.
# Chambers =1176 SF / 15.5 SF per 2.6' x 6' Infiltrator chamber = 76 required Infiltrator chambers.
Linear Footage = 76 x 6 LF per chamber = 456 required total linear feet of Infiltrator chamber.
Chambers will be at least 20' from structures, 6' from the septic tank, 25' from the water line, 10' from the
property line and 4x farther away from road cuts than the vertical differential between the road cut and the
leach field. Given the above requirements, our site accommodates 485 LF of chambers, placed two lines of

avoid cutting chambers, we will use 78 chambers -2 more than required—totaling 468 LF. Since our leach
field site slopes at approximately a 14 -degree angle (slope = 1:4), the chamber on the downhill side of the
bed will be covered with 12" (min) native backfill, while the uphill chamber will be covered with up to
approximately 36' native backfill. This is well within the Infiltrator specifications of 12"118" of cover.

Regulation, produced by the Aspen Environmental Health Department

Studio Pump/Chamber = Zoeller 267 sewage pump (or equivalent) to provide 50 gallon dosing from 100
gallon pump chamber, via 2" supply line to studio distribution box (which will distribute
it to septic tank).
Main D -Boz will provide an examination port for the system, will equalize pressure and will supply
effluent to the Infiltrator® leach field via gravity flow through a 4" line to the uppermost
chamber.
Studio D -Box will distribute sewage from studio to the septic tank via gravity flow.
Alarms will be provided at both pump chambers
Leach Area, A = 45 T e 1690 SF, where t = avg perk rate. From HP Geotech reports
(attached), for perk test holes #2-5 (note that perk hole #1 was not within the leach field
area) the average perk rate is 1/4(30+40+28+45) = 36 min/m.
We are using den Infiltrator system, Standard product, in a series of bed systems, therefore we can reduce
the required leach area by 30%
Reduced A = 1680 SF x 0.7 = 1176 SF.
0 Chambers = 1176 SF/ 155 SF per Standard Infiltrator chamber = 76 required Standard chambers.
Linear Footage = 76 x 6.25 LF per chamber = 475 LF, required total linear feet of Standard chambers
Chambers will be at least 20' from structures. 6' from the septic tank, 25' from the water line, 10' from the
property line and 4x farther away from road cuts than the vertical differential between the road cut and the
leach field. Given the above requirements, our site easily accommodates the 76 chambers, placed in six
beds that are spaced C-0" apart. Each bed is 6'-2" wide and contains two rows of chambers, 6" apart. as
shown on the accompanying drawing. Since our leach field site slopes at approximately a 14 -degree angle
(slope = 1 4, or 25%), the chamber on the downhill side of the bed will be covered with 6" (min) native
backfill, while the uphill chamber will be covered with up to approximately 30" native backfill. This is well
within the Infiltrator specifications of 6"-48" of cover.
Our system will be installed in serial distribution as shown on the accompanying drawings.

Responses:
A. We will be installing an NSF -approved composting toilet (Sun Mar, Clivus Multrum, Phoenix or
equivalent) in the art studio above the garage so that we will only need to pump gray water, rather than
black water, to the septic tank in the front of the house.
B. Please see revised drawings and specifications. We are now using the Infiltrator® Equalizer 36 product
and have calculated our requirement to be 6(8.42 -foot units (rather than 7(6.25 -foot units).
C. 1. The revised drawing shows the drinking water supply line continuing into the garage and then into
the house. Between the house and garage, the entire line will be encased with schedule 40 pipe of
sufficient diameter to slide easily over the line. This will meet the requirement that fresh water supply
lines which are closer than 10 feet from building effluent lines are encased for at least ten feet on each
side of the place where components are closer than this required separation.
2. We have included details on the septic tank as requested.
3. We have included details on the pump and pump chamber as requested.
4. From the distribution box, will use gravity flow serial distribution to the Infiltrator® Equalizer 36
units.
5. Infiltrator® staff engineers, as well as septic system design texts (photocopied and included
herein) recommend that a serial distribution system is the best resolution for a leach field on a
sloping site such as ours. The serial distribution leach field design eliminates the need for equal
length chambers, as noted by Infiltrator® engineering staff (refer to letter from Infiltrator@
engineering staff, included herein).

June 19, 2002. I have received your request for a review of the design. Please note that the review
of septic plans by Infiltrator Systems Inc. (ISI) is not required; ISI does not approve plans, siting, or
system design. However, with regard to your specific design, I have addressed my suggestions
below.
Infiltrator chambers hove been developed to accommodate several design objectives and
varying site conditions. infiltrator chambers have been used successfully on hillsides, often utilizing
serial distribution methods. Systems using serial distribution may be laid out with a some -end inlet,
center inlet, or alternate -end inlet. Please note that ISI's chambers have been installed in the
aforementioned conditions successfully. These systems are often used in many states such as Texas
and Oregon and are included in ISI's design manuals for those states. Please see the partial design
manuals attached. Serial distribution with varying trench lengths is an acceptable use of Infiltrator
chambers. The final design (type of layout) decisions have been typically prescribed by local
codes or by preference of the designer.
The soil test holes indicate clayey sandy gravel at the site. Please be aware that this type of soil is
sensitive to construction activity. Take measures to protect the leachfield site from construction
equipment, activities and material storage.

Step 4: Since settlement may take 6-12 months, the construction area should be resodded or reseeded immediately using grasses adapted to the
area.
E. Septic Tank and Pump Chamber Installation
Step 1: Excavation depths for the septic tank and pump chamber are determined largely by what is necessary to obtain gravity flow in the sewer
from the point where it leaves the house. A two percent slope is required for the house sewer to the septic tank while a one percent slope is sufficient
for a pipe carrying septic tank effluent. Make sure both tanks are tightly sealed against groundwater seepage before installation. The pump chamber
should be the same size or larger than the septic tank to allow for at least one day of reserve storage of effluent after the high water alarm is activated
due to pump or float failure.
Step 2: Carefully level both the septic and pump tanks for proper operation after their installation. Access must be provided to all parts of both
tanks to allow for inspection and maintenance. Use 4 -inch diameter PVC sewer pipe (ASTM -D-2665, 3033, or 3034) with water tight connections
between the house and the septic tank and between the septic tank and pump chamber. Footing and roofing drains must not be connected to the
septic system. Crown backfill to a height of 6 inches over the tanks to allow for settling and to divert surface runoff (Figure 11).
Step 3: Install a submersible sewage effluent pump or siphon in the pump chamber that has the head and discharge characteristics recommended
by the FACTS program. This recommendation is designed to balance pump characteristics against the hydraulic requirements of the piping network.
Try to select a commercially available pump with a high confidence factor (a measure of the pump's ability to meet the head and discharge
requirements of the piping network) from the list of pumps generated by FACTS. Do not select a pump that is different from those recommended
unless the FACCS program was used to redesign the pipiog network for the characteristics of that particular pump. The proper pump or siphon
should give an even discharge from all dosing holes in the soil disposal area. Set the pump 6-8 inches above the tank floor on a large platform of
cement blocks m prevent settled sludge from interfering with the operation of the pump and pipiog network (Figure 12).

additional percolation testing at the subject site. The work was done in addition to our
agreement for Professional Services to you, dated November 12, 2001.
Two percolation test holes were excavated and soaked with water on June 11, 2002 by
the client and at the locations shown on Fig. 1. The subsoils exposed in the percolation
holes (P4 and P5) consisted of clayey sandy gravel with cobbles.
Percolation testing was conducted on June 12, 2002, by a representative of Hepworth -
Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. The percolation test results are summarized on Table I.
Pitkin County requires a professional civil engineer design the septic disposal system.

Dear Alexis and Doug:
As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. visited the
subject site on November 14, 2001 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support
and perform percolation testing. The findings of our work, recommendations for the
foundation design and percolation test results are presented in this report. The work
was done in accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to
you, dated November 12, 2001.
The proposed residence will be one story with a loft and consist of strawbale/post and
beam construction over a walkout basement level. Construction of the house is planned
for the spring of 2002.
At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut to rough slab
subgrade in one level up to 11 feet below the adjacent ground surface and daylighting to
the east. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted mostly of dense,
clayey sandy gravel with cobbles. Topsoil and excavation spoil were observed in the
eastern portion of the excavation. The results of a gradation analysis performed on a
sample of the clayey sandy gravel with cobbles (minus 5 inch fraction) obtained from
the site are presented on Fig. 2. No free water was encountered in the excavation and
the soils were slightly moist.
Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed
construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural gravel soil designed for
an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,500 psf can be used for support of the proposed
residence. It was recommended to Doug Hill to remove the topsoil and fill soils in the

eastern portion of the excavation and extend the bearing level down to dense gravel
soils. Footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet
for columns. Loose and disturbed soils, finer -grained soils and any existing fill in
footing areas should be removed and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed
natural gravel soils. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate soil cover
above their bearing elevations for frost protection. The subgrade should be protected
from freezing until backfilling is completed and concrete should not be placed on frozen
soil. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local
anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 10 feet. Foundation
walls acting as retaining structures should be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure
based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of at least 55 pcf for on-site soil as backfill. A
perimeter foundation drain should be provided to prevent temporary buildup of
hydrostatic pressure behind the walls and prevent wetting of the lower walkout level.
Structural fill placed within floor slab areas can consist of the on-site soils compacted to
at least 95 % of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. Backfill
placed around the structure should be compacted and the surface graded to prevent
ponding within at least 10 feet of the building.
Percolation tests were conducted on November 14, 2001 to evaluate the feasibility of an
infiltration septic disposal system at the site. One profile pit and three percolation holes
were dug at the locations shown on Fig. 1. The test holes (nominal 12 inch diameter by
12 inch deep) were hand dug at the bottom of shallow backhoe pits and were soaked
with water by the client one day prior to testing. The soils exposed in the percolation
holes are similar to those exposed in the Profile Pit and consist of 1 foot of topsoil
overlying dense, clayey sandy gravel. Percolation test results indicate infiltration rates
between 30 and 120 minutes per inch with an overall average rate of 63 minutes per
inch. The percolation test results are presented in Table I. Pitkin County requires that
a civil engineer design the infiltration septic disposal system.
The foundation recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation
of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface
exploration to evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation
influence. This study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the footings have
equal or better support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be

greater than indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface
conditions. In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface
conditions below the excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data
obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this
letter.
