Septic permit approved per compliance with the engineer design and specifications dated February 1, 2000 and
memo with initialed strikeouts dated February 9, 2000. Any changes must be approved by this department and
the design engineer prior to them being made.
Design is to add a 750 gallon septic tank in series between the existing 1,000 gallon septic tank and existing 1,000
gallon dosing tank. The existing mound is to be enlarged to 1,167 sq. ft.
Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the Pitkin
County ISDS regulations. The proposed mound is 124 ft from the well, not the required 132 ft. The engineer has
included a statement that the well will not be contaminated.
This department does not endorse any brand of products.
The engineer must do a final inspection of the installation and submit an as -built letter to this department. This
department must also be called for an inspection with a minimum of 48 hours advanced notice.

The fee for a ISDS application is $330 for a permit that takes 6 hours or less for the department to approve. If approval takes
longer than 6 hours, a rate of $55 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time
of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit; second, before

Distance from existing wells. The existing system is 150 feet from an
existing well. The regulations require an additional 8 feet for every 100
gallons over 1,000 gallons. Flow = 4 . 4 bed rooms x z pea/br x 100
gal/day/per x 1.75 = 1,400 gallons per day, this equates to an additional 32
feet, or requiring 132' from the well. The proposed system is a Mound System
and is 124 -feat away from the well at the edge of the fill area and-440—feet
,drom the actual disposal area of the system. So I don't think it's really an
tissue, as ws meet the actual 132' minimum distance requirement to the disposal
area with the design of the system.
Based on the geological conditions and evaluation of risk of contamination of
the well, I am not concerned about the 124 -foot horizontal distance from the
well to the fill area in providing an adequate level of safety against
contamination. I believe the 124 -foot separation between the edge of the fill
and- — — * -- --1-absorptros-area-and the well is appropriate.
I hope these clear up the design and any other issues you may have.

The BROD Residence septic system was installed placed into service in June of
2000. MWE and GDD have inspected the installation of the system and find it
was installed according to MWE's design and PCBH requirements. Slight
modifications were made to maintain the 126' clearance from the well to tha
edge of the field and 132' to the actual system, (IE - The system was moved
-10' east of the proposed location shown on the drawing). This letter is to

The following are my design notes for the addition to the Brod Residence
Septic System design. The site is a flat area next to the home along Snowmass
Creek. This system is an addition to the existing system.
4 - Bedrooms
Approx. 3,000 Square Feet of living area
- 100 gallons per day per person
- A percolation test was not performed as ground water is 4' below existing
grades.
Ground water 4'+\- feet from a surface
Flow = Q = 4 bed rooms x two per/br. x 100 gal/day/per x 1.75 = 1,400
gallons per day.
This requires the new system to be 132 -feet from the well. Existing well is
124' from the edge of the new system and 140 -feet from the actual field.
Tank sizing - 4 - Bed Rooms requires 1,750 gallons of septic tank; Q X 1.25
Reuse the existing 1,000 gallon tank and install one additional 750 -gallon
tank in series for total 1,750 gallons of septic tanks. The new system will
require reusing the existing dosing tank to pump the effluent up to the
proposed Mound system. The existing 1,000 gallon pumping tank in series with
the two septic tanks will be acceptable for this system.
Dosing/pumping tank is a 1,000 gallon single chambered dosing tank which will
allow a dosing volume of - 300 gallons per dose 2-3 times per day.
Area of Septic field required = A
A = Q\ Loading Rate of the soils to be brought in as fill. The Loading Rate,
LR = 1.2 gallons pr Sq ft. per day.
A = Q/LR = 1,400/ 1.2 = 1,167 square feet
The mound system is shown on the attached drawing and discussed in further
detail on the attached memorandum. System total size is -45' X 72', with a
disposal area 50' X 24' laid out to fit site conditions and meet all setbacks
as shown on the attached drawing. Approximately 2.44' of sand fill and 9" of
gravel will be required to be brought in to bring the system a minimum of 4'
above the ground water. Approximately 1.5' of fill will be placed on top of
the system. The design connects to the existing system and extends the system
- 18' more. The length (721) of the existing system does not change, but the
width is increased from 6' to 241. The contractor is to expose the existing
system and carefully extend all materials, (manifold pipe, gravel, sand, fill,
fabric and other materials) needed for the new system. Extend new system using
3' between laterals and 1.5' from the edges of the system to the ends of the
lateral lines
The new tank will be installed in series along side the existing tank. Tees
will be installed on both the inffluent and effluent lines of the tank, set on
the inside of the tank. Set top of line from tee within 1" of the roof of the
tank and extend line downward 12" below center line of tee. Fill tank with
water prior to backfill to check for leaks and leave water in tank for placing
the system in service. The septic tank will be a two -chambered tank and
repiped to allow the flow from the existing tank into the new tank and out,
prior to discharge into the dosing tank.
Reuse the existing manifold (2" Sch 40 PVC from the tank to the distribution
laterals) where it connects to the existing 2" sch 40 perforated PVC. The new
system will require a 1-1/2" manifold to the new 6 new 1" laterals rows.
Connect to the existing 2" manifold at the second existing lateral line with a
2" X 1-1/2" coupling and extend the new 1-1/2" manifold to each of the lateral
rows. Each row of six new laterals consists of 2 - 1" lines, 25' long, on each
side of the manifold. All piping to be bedded in a minimum of 2" under and 6"
over of 3/4" screened rock. See details and attached design memo on materials
and additional information on installation.
Adjustments to fit site contours and conditions may be made per approval of
the engineer. Elevations of the tank and trenches shall be finalized in the
field by the engineer. Installation and operation will be approved by the
engineers prior„tv. o final acceptance. System must meet all PCEH and MWE

RE: Brod SEPTIC SYSTEM DESIGN - Addition
This memorandum is written to give you additional details on the design, materials, and installation of the addition
to the existing Septic System which was designed to serve the Brod home in Old Snowmass. The memorandum is
separated into three sections; I - Septic tank and Mound System design, 2 - Effluent tank design, 3 - installation
and Materials for the system. The design drawing is also attached for additional reference.
1. Septic Tank and Mound System Design:
The location of the home and the site conditions determined the required type of system which was to be designed.
The site is located just above the water table along Snowtttass Creek. The difficulties encountered dealt with the
limited area to work with and included the existing system already in place, existing trees, and high ground water
These items lead to the design of a new system which would add to the existing standard septic tank and Mound
System, and dosing system that lifts the effluent up to a flat area next to the home site for disposal. Please see my
Memorandum dated February 1, 2000 for additional information on the new system and addition to the old system
The system design was based on the ultimate construction of a 4 -bedroom residence, which required at a minimum,
1.750 gallons of septic tanks for the separation of solids and a dosing tank. The existing 1,000 gallon septic tank
can be pumped and reused, ADD an additional 750 gallon tank in series, (TOTAL 1,750 GALLONS), prior to
connection to the existing 1,000 gallon tank effluent pump/dosing tank. The dosing tank is to be cleaned and
reused with the new system, but the pump will be replaced, The new septic tank is to be a double chambered tank.
The three tanks are to be installed in a series with the septic tanks first, followed by the effluent pump tank. The
contractor will be required to connect to the existing system and use the existing elevations.
The water level, the dosing system, and the flow anticipated to utilized by the system determine the size of the
Mound System required. Using 1.2 gallons per square fool, a flow of 1,400 gallons per day requires 1,167 square
feet of septic disposal in the Mound System.
The details of the Mound System, installation, elevations, and location are shown on the attached design drawing
and sheets. The overall system size of the new system will be 45 -feet X 72 -feet. The actual field size is 24 -feet X
50 -feet. The existing system is 22' X 72' and the actual field is 6 feet wide and 50 feet long. The new system will
not increase in length (72'), but will increase in width, from 22' to 45'. The existing transmission piping and
manifold are 2 -inch and the existing distribution laterals are 2 -inch, with the laterals being perforated piping, (1/4 -
inch holes on 36 -inch centers), Sch 40, PVC. The new system will connect to the existing manifold at the second
existing lateral with a 2" X I-1/2" coupling. The new manifold will be 1 -1/2 -inch and extend to the six new lateral
lines. The laterals are to be perforated piping, (1/4 -inch holes on 60 -inch centers), with 9 -inches of gravel under
and 2 -inches of gravel over the pipe. New system is to be laid out similar to the existing with 3' between lateral
lines and 9 -inches of gravel.

The new system will tie directly into the existing system, using similar materials, depths, widths, cover, and other
features. The contractor will need to carefully expose the existing system, taking caution to the limit the
disturbance of the system. The new sand depth starts at the existing sand depth of 1.44 -feet and is 2.44 -feet at the
end. The sand is to be a medium sized sand with the following characteristics: 25%+ between 2.0 and 0.25mm;
30-35%- between 0.25 and 0.05mm; and 5-10% between 0.05 and 0.002mm. This sand is similar to the masonry
sand available at Roaring Fork Sand and Gravel. installation details and instructions are attached to this
memorandum. Total height of the system is -- 2.44' sand, 12" gravel, and 1.5' fill, for — '
Effluent Pumping Tank:
The existing effluent pumping tank will be reused and will be required to pump the effluent from the septic tank to
the septic field in the terrace above the home site. The tank capacity is approximately 1,000 gallons. The tank was
sized in order to get the required additional septic tank capacity and to cycle the pump operation of the system.
The new pumping system is required to pump the effluent up approximately 14 -feet of elevation difference and 26 -
feet of piping and head losses, for a total of 40 -feet of head at 70 gpm. The existing pump will need to be replaced.
The new pump we have chosen for the system is a submersible, by Hydromatic Pump, Model number SPD -100H, a
bronze pump system, with a piggyback float system. The pump is a 1.0 horse power, single phase, 115 Volt unit,
with a 2 -inch discharge and a built in diaphragm level control system or optional float system to regulate the
operation of the pump based on water levels in the tank. The existing pumps are not sized correctly and cannot be
reused. The pump operation and installation is simple, as the water level in the tank rises it switches on the pump,
which operates until it reaches the bottom of the pump and shuts the pump off. We can reused the operational float
level system for the tank. If it needs to be replaced, use a double float system, also by Hydromatic, Model 3900.
The pump is to set on the floor of the tank approximately 6 -inch above the floor. (Design details for operational
water levels in the tank are to be field determined by the design engineer. The type of pump control depends on
the dimensions of the tank). Please check to see if the existing tanks controls meet these recommendations, if they
do, they can be reused with the new system.
The pump operates at a approximately flow rate of 70 gallons per minute at the required 40 -feet head, and pumps
the effluent up to the manifold just prior to the distribution laterals. The manifold distributes the flow into the
laterals. The flow is evenly divided into the 8 lateral piping systems, (6 new and 2 existing). Additional
information on the selected pump is enclosed for your review and use.
At your option a second pump could be purchased as a backup or stand by pump. This would shorten the system
down time and inconveniences which will occur if the pump breaks down or has other problems. The cost of the
second pump is approximately 51,200.00. It is not required, but is recommended.
If not already installed, the effluent tank is also required by the County to be equipped with a high water level
alarm system to alert you when a pump has failed to operate or another problem has risen. The high water level
alarm system is operated by a float, mounted on the tank wall, which is activated when the water level rises to a
chosen point above the normal operating pump level. The float signals a red light and a buzzer, which should be
located in your adjacent mechanical room or garage. The buzzer can be turned off manually signaling
acknowledgment of the problem, but the red light stays on until after the water level drops back down. This is a
required safety feature which assists the owner in the satisfactory operation of system by letting you know you have
a problem before it becomes an emergency situation. The system we have chosen is a Tank Alert 1. by S.J. Electro.
(See design drawing for additional level control details. Please check to see if the existing alarm can be reused.
2 - 2 -inch PVC conduits from the adjacent home to the new effluent pumping tank can be reused. One is for power
to the pump and the other one for the high water level control system. Please inform the electrical designer of the
home of these additions.
Installation and Materials
The septic tank can be obtained from Copeland concrete products in Rifle, or from the locally in Emma from
Dreager. The tanks should be located as shown on the drawings and installed level. The access ports are to be
sealed water tight and brought up to within 6 -inches of final grade. If in the event the tanks are too high, minor
landscaping may be required to bury them. The invert elevations for both tanks are critical to the operation of tite
pump and should be followed closely. The blockouts for the inlets and outlets are also required to sealed water
tight to prevent infiltration.
All piping, pump, and alarm system materials can be obtained from Dodson Engineering products in Glenwood or
Grand Junction Pipe in Basalt. The 4 -inch piping from the house to the septic tank and to the pumping tank is
SDR 35. All manifold, distribution, and lateral piping is to be Schedule 40 PVC. All Piping should be installed at a
minimum depth of 3.5 -feet. The pumping line is to be laid with the shown slope to permit the line to drain back
into the tank after each pumping cycle to prevent freezing. The laterals are to be installed as shown on the
drawing and are need to be installed to within + or - .01 -feel. (See attached design drawing for bedding details and
additional installation notes.)
The septic system installation can be done by any excavation contractor who is familiar with this type of project. If

RE: WILTON SEPTIC SYSTEM DESIGN
Dear Bob:
As per our telephone communication last week, this letter is written to inform
you of the status of the proposed septic system on lot 4 of the Oh -Be -Joyful
subdivision owned by Clifton and Ann Wilton, McLaughlin Water Engineers, Ltd.
have been hired by the Wilton's to design the septic system for the proposed
residence on the lot. The design and the installation of the system will be
completed next spring. We do not have adequate percolation tests at the
location of the proposed system to complete the design at this time. These will
obtained next spring once the ground thaws. The system will be designed to
meet all Pitkin County Environmental Health requirements and will be submitted
to you for approval upon completion of the design and prior to installation.
The Wilton's and their representative Nancy Smith would like to proceed with
the required Pitkin County building application, which includes the septic system
permit this winter. I hope this letter assuring you that the system will be
designed by a professional engineer, meeting all Pitkin County requirements, will
allow the Wilton's to proceed with their building application without delays due
to the incomplete septic system design.

On Wednesday December 5, 1990, I made a site visit to lot 4 of the Oh -Be -Joyful DANIEL M PETRAMAU
subdivision owned by Clifton and Ann Wilton, to inspect the recently completed
septic system installed on the property. The septic system was generally
installed according to the plans and specifications, by McLaughlin Water
Engineers, Ltd. On my site visit, I calculated the float elevations for the dosing
tank and the floats were installed by the contractor. The pump was connected
and ran as designed. The control system for tank levels and high water alarm
system operation was also verified during my visit. Attached is a copy of the
design drawing with corrections and dosing tank information for your files.
