This letter should serve as a revision to the plans for the Goldstein cabin located in Section
22, Range 82, West, Township 85 South, near the Frying Pan River in Pitkin County,
Colorado. Due to poor initial percolation test results, Nelson Environmental performed a set
of percolation tests recently, and we have subsequently revised the absorption system size
required.
Nelson Environmental has provided percolation test results a 18 inutes per inch, done in the
same area as originally tested. These results signify a Class soil as per the Pitkin County
ISDS regulations. The contractor is in the process of estimating cots for different alternatives,
so I am providing the requirements for an absorption bed, absorption trenches, and seepage
pit (drywell) design as follows:
The required area for an absorption bed using infiltrator units and taking a 40%
reduction is 862.5 square feet (21' x 42' bed, effective area = 882 square
feet).
2. The required area for absorption trenches using infiltrator units and taking a
50% reduction is 562.5 square feet (192 linear feet of trench, effective areas
= 576 square feet).

As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and
percolation tests to design a septic system for the proposed residence on property owned by you.
We conducted this study according to Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations_ on Individual
Sewage Disngsal Systems on September 14, 1994. We have based our findings on the
subsurface conditions encountered in this area.

A soil profile pit, within the proposed absorption area, was reportedly excavated to a depth of
eight feet below the existing grade. No groundwater was encountered, and bedrock was not
present within eight feet of the surface of the ground.
There were gravels and cobble intermixed within the soil matrix from three feet down, with
diameters ranging from two -inches to over three feet. There appeared to be less cobble and more
fine silty sand in the shallow portion of the excavations to three or four feet. The subsurface soil
conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate

the percolation testing was run, consisted of silty sands, fine gravel, and cobbles rocks extending
below the percolation test hole depth, and to a depth of fifty-five to sixty inches. These tan sands
and gravels were well consolidated and exhibited no tendency to swell, although some smearing
and compaction occurred from the pressure of the excavating equipment.
Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption area South of the building. Three
shallow holes were hand dug in the bottom of backhoe excavations to a depth of approximately
fifty-five or sixty inches. The percolation holes had been excavated earlier. Four inches of gravel
was placed in the percolation test holes. The test holes were pre-soaked by adding water the
evening before and again every hour for four hours before beginning the percolation test. There
was no water remaining in any of the percolation test holes after the initial presoaking period.
The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the sands
have an average percolation rate of 11 rninutes per inch and are acceptable for a conventional
infiltration design for the on-site sewage system.
Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area
for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in
this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is
some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soil across the site may
not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation if
further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be
advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluation of our
recommendations.

13.04.030 Jurisdiction for water quality.
Pursuant to C.R.S. 1973, 31-15-707(1), and for the purpose of maintaining and
protecting its municipal water supply from injury and pollution, the city shall exercise regulatory
and supervisory jurisdiction within the incorporated limits of the City of Aspen and over ail
streams and sources contributing to municipal water supplies for a distance of five (5) miles
above the points from which municipal water supplies are diverted. (Ord. No. 44-1981, § 1;
Ord. No. 12-1983, § 2: Code 1971, § 11-1.3)
13.04.040 Discharges unlawful.
Within the jurisdictional areas defined in section 13.04.030, it shall be unlawful for any
person to discharge from either a point on a nonpoint source any pollutant or engage in any
activity which will result in the degradation of water quality below the standards set forth in
section 13.04.020. (Ord. No. 44-1981, § 1; Ord. No. 12-1983, §§ 2, 3(b): Code 1971, § 11-1.4)
(g) Pollutant means dredged spoil, solid waste, incinerator residue, sewage,
garbage, sewage sludge, munitions, chemical waste, biological materials, radioactive
materials, heat, wrecked or discarded equipment, rock, sand, cellar dirt and industrial,
municipal and agricultural waste, dirt and slurry.

7. All materials, installation practices, setback
requirements, 'etc., shall comply with the Pitkin County
Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulations.
2. Piping to system shall be standard sewer pipe, ASTM 2729 Sewer
& Drain Leochfie/d Pipe. (use ASTM 3034 or better in traffic areas)
J. The area disturbed by construction shall be reseeded with
native grosses to prevent erosion.
4. Use risers as needed to bring septic tank access hatch
within 6" of finished grade.
5. Cost iron pipe of equal strength or other pipe properly
supported to prevent failure by settling shall extend
from tank for o distance of at least five feet (5) from
the inlet and outlet ends.
6. The following preventative maintenance schedule 15
recommended to prolong the life of the system.
o) Pump septic tanks of least once o year.
b) Check plumbing fixtures on o regular basis and repair
OH leaks which can odd substantial amounts of water
to the system.
7. The Contractor and Owner shell take whatever measures
are necessary to assure that a) the septic tank and
sewer lines are completely water tight to prevent
%nfiltrotion of groundwater into the system, and
b) the system is installed to prevent freezing of
gravity sewer lines.
8. The Pitkin County Environmental Health Deportment and
the Engineer shall be notified when construction
commences and kept abreast of the construction progress
SO that sufficient inspection can be performed to assure
conformance with these plans. Provide a Mir
