The revision is based on qt M*fD0tW V*kth6. carmaker iii ftM 19111 April 30, 2OQk design letter. All previous designs should be discarded to avoid confusion. SrM CONDTITONS The property is in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has a 15% slope to the west-southwest and a thick cover of native grasses, sagebrush and sparse scrub oak The residence will be served by aMW lord 202*0 from the drain field. The sewage loading with a pealing factor of 1.75 is 2275 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and garbage grinders. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS A subsurface investigation was performed by digging four percolation holes, 32 to 36 inches deep, and one profile pit at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface materials in the profile pit consisted of 6 inches of topsoil, underlain by slightly silty, gravelly, sand, with roots, underlain by slightly silty, gravelly, sand, and sandstone colluvium to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. No ground water was encountered. Percola- tion tests indicate percolation rates of 18 to 27 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate iSM %WI.Arcolation data is presented in Table 1. RECOMMENDATIONS The installation must include two septic tanks and six chamber -type drain field trenches installed at the locations presented on Figure 1. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of dispersal gravel. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mer should be sown at the drain field to revegetate the surface. These mires do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbio- degradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LEW TATIONS An OWS design should be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the change on the proposed OWS. If the health department modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of the APEED ISDS regulations and requirements. If there are questions, please call. The CHURCHO& Assoc Edward O. Church, P.E.
