Nelson Environmental & Wastewater Solutions, Ltd JUN 0$1996 ENVIRONMENTAL HEALI-H ASPEN / PITKEN June 2, 1996 W Ms. Kim Reid S Spur K Guest Ranch 26617 Frying Pan Road Meredith, CO 81642 Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for a Replacement Individual Sewage System for Cabin #l, Spur K Guest Ranch Located in the NE 1/4, NW 1/4, Section 21, Township 8 South Range 83 West of the 6th P. M., Pitkin County, Colorado Dear Kim: As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation test on the subject property. The purpose of this work is to permit a design of a proposed replacement septic system for the existing #1 cabin residence located on the subject property. We conducted this study according to Section 5-1 through 5-5 of Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulation (Revised May 1995) on May 29, 1996. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. We will furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at our earliest opportunity so that a permit to construct the onsite sewage system may be obtained. Existing Construction and Building Site: The guest lodge and cabins are believed to be constructed in the late 1800's and into the late 1940's. This cabin residence for which the replacement septic system is being proposed is one of about twenty structures on a tract of approximately 20 acres. The cabin residence is a one bedroom, one bathroom log home The total living area of this residence is approximately 500 square feet. There are several additional small cabin structures on the parcel. Each is presumed to have some sort of existing septic system. The #1 cabin site is located in a meadow with a gently rolling topography, sloping at less than a 15% grade toward the Frying Pan River. Typical of this area, the vegetation pattern of sagebrush and native grasses covered most of the property. There are several spruce and pine trees around this cabin site and interspersed throughout the property. Water to the residence is supplied from a surface spring feeding a central distribution water line. The water line appears to be located on the North side of this house. There are several small irrigation ditches routed through the parcel and two small ponds around the main lodge. However, none of the water courses is located within 50 feet of this proposed septic system. The Frying Pan River is located across the Frying Pan Road below this cabin site. It is estimated to be 250 away from and 30 feet below the cabin site. Lie P.O. The size and construction of this and the other septic systems on the property is unknown. A replacement septic tank was set to the west side of the cabin prior to our arrival. There was also a partially exposed absorption trench behind the cabin leading to the Northwest. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile pit was excavated at the proposed drywell location in conjunction with this investigation. The profile pit was ten feet deep. It revealed that the soils on this portion of the lot consist of a surface layer of shallow dark brown loam topsoil about 12 inches thick overlaying a reddish, gravely sandy loam to a depth of four and one-half feet. Below those layers were two additional layers One consisted of a of light gray silty sand, and the other below that from a depth of six feet to the bottom of the profile hole, consisted of a grayish brown sandy loam and gravel. Cobbles from a few inches to four feet in diameter to were present in the soil matrix throughout the profile pit. The shrink/swell potential of the soils appears to be low. The soils were somewhat moist from the Spring runoff, and there was little smearing and compaction caused by the excavating equipment. Bedrock was not encountered, and there was no evidence of a water table to the depth of the profile excavation. Percolation Testing: The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedure at the approximate location shown on Figure 1 (Site Plan) and on Figure 2 (Existing Conditions Around Cabin #1). A test hole was excavated at the bottom of the profile pit in the area proposed absorption system. Percolation testing was performed in the proposed drywell absorption area. This testing was performed in a shallow hole dug with hand tools at the bottom of an excavation to a depth of ten feet. The percolation hole was pre-soaked before our testing measurements by adding water the evening before and sixty gallons of water over an eight hour period during the day before beginning the percolation test measurements. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. The percolation test result was quite consistent and indicate that the gravelly sandy loam soils have a percolation rate of 6 minutes per inch, a satisfactory percolation rate for the installation of drywells under Pitkin County criteria. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation, if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so that we may reevaluate our recommendations. If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the office. Sincerely, 11— _/&_ Robert F. Nelson, R.E.H.S. President Reviewed By-. The letter presents an installation report for the Onsite Wastewater System (OWS) design for Honeynut Cabin #1 at the Spur K Guest Ranch. The OWS was designed in our letter of July 8, 1996. We understand the repair field was installed during the week of July 8, 1996. We nor our representative Bob Nelson were called to observe the installation. We talked to Tom Dunlop of the Pitkin County Health Department. He indicated he observed the installation on July 12, 1996 and the area of the field was per the design. Because we were not called to observe the installation, we cannot certify the installation. We can transmit our knowledge of the in- stallation, which indicates the OWS was installed per the design. ENGINEERS & GEOLOGISTS July 8, 1996 Spur K Guest Ranch, ATTN: Kim Reid 26617 Frying Pan Road Meredith, CO 81642 Subject: OSDS Design - Cabin 1, Honeynut Spur K Guest Ranch NW 1/4, SECTION 21, T8S, R83W, 6TH P.M. Pitkin County, Colorado Job No. 7601 Dear Ms. Reid, 01996 ENVIRON • E •' "L '' ', As requested, we have prepared an Onsite Wastewater System (OWS) design for Honeynut Cabin #1 at the Spur K Guest Ranch. Subsurface conditions were investigated by Nelson Environmental & Wastewater Solutions, Ltd. and CTL/Thompson, Inc. SITE CONDITIONS - Cabin #1 is a part of the Spur K Guest Ranch as pre- sented on Fig. 1. The cabin is located in a rural mountain area where OWS and wells or springs are used. The well and the Frying Pan River are greater than 100 feet from the proposed drain field. EXISTING CONSTRUCTION - A 500 square foot (SF) one bedroom cabin exists as indicated on Figs. 1 and 2. The type of existing OWS at the cabin is unknown. At the time of our site visit, a new 1000 gallon two compartment septic tank to the southwest of the cabin, as a part of the repair. A sewer line between the cabin and septic tank had been installed. A seepage pit was proposed, but because ground water was encountered, a drain field will be required. The minimum design for an OWS in Pitkin County is a 2 bedroom system, so a 2 bedroom system will be required for Cabin #1. The sewage load for a 2 bedroom cabin is 300 gallons per day (GPD) at 75 GPD per pat- ron, assuming 2 people per bedroom. Pitkin County requires a safety factor of 1.75 which includes a garbage grinder and washing machine. The ground surface slopes gently to the south. The slope at the drain field is 10% to the south. There is a sparse cover of native grasses. There are rounded boulders at the surface. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS - The site is located in a valley. The valley has glacial deposits in the vicinity of the Spur K Guest Ranch. Sub- surface conditions were exposed in a large pit at the proposed field and indicated in logs of profile borings by CTL/Thompson. Subsurface materials consisted of 12 inches of topsoil underlain by interlayered glacial till consisting of clay and silt layers, sand, and boulders and cobbles. Water was encountered or observed at depths of 6.5 to 11 feet. A profile of ground water is indicated on Fig. 2. Percolation tests were performed by Nelson and CTL/Thompson with percolation rates as ranging from 2 to 6 minutes per inch (MPI). We believe the CTL/Thomp- P.O. RECOMMENDATIONS - The results of our site visit indicates an OWS can be installed as presented on Fig. 2. The OWS design is based on a sewage load of 300 GPD and a percolation rate of 28 MPI which is based on a sand filter design. Based on the variable subsurface materials, we recommend establishing 2 feet of filter material below the dispers- al gravel. With the existing large pit, site preparation must be done to fill the pit. We recommend the pit be filled to a depth of 2 feet below the planned bottom of dispersal gravel with minus 6 inch onsite material. We recommend the installation of a 18 feet by 31 feet sand filter field, for an area of 558 SF. From the depth of 2 feet below the bottom of the dispersal gravel, 2 feet of filter material consist- ing of minus 2.5 inch onsite material should be placed to the bottom of the dispersal gravel elevation. The field should be constructed similar to the details presented on Figs. 1 and 2. The existing 1000 gallon two compartment septic tank is suitable. We believe the proposed OWS is suitable to serve a 2 bedroom facility. As Cabin #1 is a 1 bedroom cabin, we believe an additional 1 bedroom cabin could be connected to the system. We discussed this with Pitkin County personnel, but they were not willing to connect a second cabin to the OWS. If you would like to connect a second cabin, we recommend installing a water meter for the 2 cabins and establish water use is below the design 300 GPD and then request connecting the second cabin. The owner must realize an OWS is different from a public sewer system. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. We recommend the septic tank be pumped at every 2 years. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable materials down the septic system. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals mal- function. To illustrate the point, it should be noted a running toilet will consume in excess of 1,000 GPD if allowed to run. As the system is designed for 300 GPD, an excess 1000 gallon loading will flood and irreparably harm the system. LIMITATIONS - Our layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be called to observe the sub- surface conditions. If proposed construction is changed, we should be notified to evaluate the effect of the changes on the proposed system. If there are any queAtf call. E. O. CHURCH, INC 72 Edward O. Galena Aspen, CO 81611 Attention: Ms. Betsey Kipp Subject: Percolation Test Results Spur K Ranch Pitkin County, Colorado Job No. GS -1878 As requested, we performed percolation tests at the Spur K Ranch in Pitkin County, Colorado. This letter presents the results of our tests. On June 18, 1996 we drilled two (2) percolation holes and two (2) profile holes at the approximate locations shown on the attached Figure 1. Drilling was performed using a combination of 6 inch diameter air rotary and 4 inch diameter solid flight auger techniques. Drilling was directed by our engineering geologist who logged the soils penetrated by our borings. Summary logs of the soils penetrated are shown on Figure 2. Our exploratory borings penetrated nil to 1 foot of organic clayey to silty sands underlain by silty to sandy gravels with cobbles and boulders. One foot thick lenses of sandy silts and clayey gravels were found in the silty to sandy gravels in our borings P-1 and P-2. Free groundwater was encountered at 11.5 feet in our boring Profile -1 the day of drilling and at 6.5 feet in our borings Profile -1 and P-1 one day after drilling. Slotted 2 -inch PVC pipe was installed to 10 feet deep in our percolation borings P-1 and P-2. The annulus was backfilled with 3/8 -inch diameter washed rock. Our percolation borings were saturated the day of drilling and percolation testing was performed the following day. Test results are presented on the attached Figures 3 and 4. We recommend a design percolation rate of greater than 5 min/inch. Groundwater is likely present below the planned septic absorption area. We suggest advancing a test pit or exploratory boring to four feet below the planned CTL/THOMPSON, INC. CONSULTING ENGINEERS 234 CENTER DRIVE 0 GLENWOOD SPRINGS.
