The design of the Biotube filter allows only the "clear zone" liquid into the filler (due to the holes in the filter half way down the filter housing) and not the 'scum! or 'sludge' layer. It will not clog anymore than on the inlet of the second tank. The OWS was designed under our Job No. 10559, dated January 11, 2001. The system includes the installation of a 2000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet, followed by a 2000 -gallon, two-compartment precast concrete septic tank with a dosing siphon. Six chamber -beds were installed, as indicated on Figure 1. Beds `A' have 2 rows of 1 I chambers, and beds `B' have 3 rows of 1 I chambers, for a total infiltrative area of 2387 square feet (SF). A distribution box with flow regulators was installed to distribute effluent among the chamber -beds. The distribution box is large enough to handle the discharge from the dosing siphon. The irrigation ditch to the north of the drain field has been lined appropriately with a PVC liner 188 feet from the drain field. Photos are included as Figure 2. The subsurface investigation and percolation test was performed on November 8, 2000. All previous designs and/or revisions should be discarded to avoid confusion. SITE CONDITIONS - The site is a 20 -acre parcel with a 2 -acre building envelope. The lot has a moderate cover of grasses with random shrubs and small trees. The proposed field area has a 3-5% slope to the southwest. The proposed structures will be served by an onsite well located 238+ feet from the proposed drain field. An irrigation ditch is located north of the proposed field area. The irrigation ditch will need to be lined if the required setback distance of 188 feet cannot be met. If a pond is proposed within 188 feet of the drain field it must be lined appropriately. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION - A six -bedroom residence having greater than 6000 square feet (SF) is proposed at the location presented on Figure 1. We are sizing the OWS based on six bedrooms and 1560 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department (APEHD) loading of 130 gallons per day per person. The average daily sewage loading is 1560 GPD and the design loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 2730 GPD. The loading includes washing machines and garbage grinders. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS - Subsurface conditions were investigated by excavating one profile pit and four percolation holes in the proposed field area. Subsurface materials consisted of sandy clay with sparse roots to four feet, underlain by clayey sand with scattered rock fragments to the maximum depth explored of 10 feet. No bedrock or ground water was encountered. Percolation tests indicate rates of 13 to 80 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate is 38 MPI. RECOMMENDATIONS - Two septic tanks, a dosing siphon, and six chamber -beds must be installed at the locations presented on Figure 1. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 1560 GPD and a percolation rate of 38 MPI. The installation must include a 2000 -gallon two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet, to be followed by a 2000 -gallon two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with a dosing siphon in the second chamber. A 250 -gallon dose is required. Six chamber -beds, four beds with two rows of 11 and two beds with three rows 11 chambers, must be installed, as indicated on Figures 1 and 2. A distribution box with flow regulators should be used to distribute effluent efficiently throughout the beds. If access cannot be maintained, a flow splitter basin with flow regulators must be installed in place of the distribution box. The distribution box must have a minimum of seven outlets to be able to effectively distribute a 250 -gallon dose. Vehicle movement over the drain field bed area during construction should be kept at a minimum to prevent compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the beds should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of dispersal gravel or chambers. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the beds. A native seed mix should be placed. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE - The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every 2 years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIMITATIONS - A contractor experienced in OWS installation should install the OWS. Our investiga- tion, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions consider- ably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firth must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of the APEHD ISDS regulations and requirements and install the OWS accordingly. Each system is composed of a well and a holding tank. From the holding tank, water will flow to a pittess well for each individual lot. Each lot will pump water for the home, from the pittess well to their individual on-site water facilities, This water will be metered at the pitless well. Two-inch waterlines serve each building envelope. Each holding tank has three floats in it to operate the system well pump; Float 1 - high water; float 2 - operating water level; float 3 - low water. A flashing red light will activate at the well site when the low water float is activated. Low water will allow an average day's use of 350 gallons per day for each house as a reserve. The common part of each water system is the well, well pump, tank and floats. The individual part of each water system is the pitless well and pump, water meter and waterline to residence. The homeowner is responsible for all improvements inside the building envelope. Itis our opinion each house will need at least one "in-house" pressure tank, Each house is to have a sprinkler system. A private fire cistern will be supplied by the common water system. The size of this private fire cistern and pump is dependent on house size and sprinkler system design. The water system has been designed to accommodate 5000 square feet of landscape irrigation per lot. Lots 1,2 & 3 Water System This water system is located on Lot 1. Well 4 serves this water system and produces more than 27 gallons per minute. A 6000 gallon tank is buried near the well. Lot 4 Well 5 serves this lot. Only the well exists, as it is an individual well for a single lot. Total well production is 11.6 gallons per minute.
