Stan wants to know if Pitkin will require an engineered design, or if Pitkin County is still providing system designs. The original design for the site was created by Mr. nelson of Pitkin County, so he is wondering. The barn will have''/2 bath and a custodian's sink, plus 4 -horse stalls and a horse wash bay. I have explained to Stan that the horses will provide raw waste to the floor of the stall, and that the wash bay should be provided with a momentary contact valve for the washing hose to ensure it does not run when unattended. Can you get back to me on this and let me know how you would like to proceed? Site Conditions 0 The site includes an existing residence and other miscellaneous structures as shown on the enclosed site plan. The terrain in the proposed building area is relatively flat that contains overlot grading consisting of fill placement. The ground surface generally slopes to the west and southwest and has a sparse vegetative cover. 2. Field Investigation I conducted a second field exploration on June 21, 1999, and observed constructed the additional test pits requested by the Pitkin County Environmental health Department. The proposed septic field location was shown directly southeast of the proposed building envelope and approximately 110 linear feet east of the exiting water supply well. The size of the proposed new residence is 8000+/- square feet and includes 7 total bedrooms and/or similar rooms. This distance is very short and does not allow for a traditional infiltration system. Several other options were explored and each had limitations and was not acceptable to the Pitkin County Environmental health Department. Another possibility was to identify another location that may be suitable for a conventional infiltration bed. During this investigation I concluded that the northeast corner of this property offers a suitable location for a conventional septic field. 3. Excavation of Profile Pits The property owner as shown on the site plan prepared by the owner's architect excavated five percolation pits. During my field investigation of these profile pits I observed sandy silty clay soils with varying size cobble stones to a depth of 5 to 6 feet from the exiting ground surface, and 8 to 9 feet from the proposed septic system field. The soil layers were uniform in all five - profile pits and the top 12 inch to 18" layer consisted of topsoil and loam overburden. 4. Percolation Testing Five percolation test holes were dug in five adjacent test pits, labeld and numbered as shown on the enclosed site plan and soaked with water. BOX 7894 ASPEN, COLORADO 81612 33 0 PERCOLATION TESTING 0 Percolation tests were conducted on May 6, 1999 to evaluate the feasibility of an infiltration septic disposal system at the site. One profile pit, a profile boring (Boring 3) and four percolation holes were dug at the locations shown on Fig. 1. The test holes (nominal 12 inch diameter by 12 inch deep) were hand dug at the bottom of backhoe pits and were soaked with water one day prior to testing. The soils exposed in the percolation holes are generally similar to those exposed in the Profile Pit and Boring 3, and consist of about 5 to 9 feet of fill overlying silty clays and sandy gravels (see Fig. 3). Percolation testing at P-1 was not performed since the pit was based in the fill. The percolation test results, presented in Table II, indicate average percolation rates from about 36 to 60 minutes per inch. The faster rate was in the gravel soils and the two slower rates in the silty clay soils. Based on the subsurface conditions encountered and the percolation test results, the tested area should be suitable for a conventional infiltration septic disposal system. We recommend the infiltration area be based in the natural soils. A civil engineer should design the infiltration septic disposal system. LIMITATIONS This study has been conducted in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering principles and practices in this area at this time. We make no warranty either expressed or implied. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon the data obtained from the exploratory borings and pits located as indicated on Fig. 1, the proposed type of construction and our experience in the area. Our findings include interpolation and extrapolation of the subsurface conditions identified at the exploratory borings and pits and variations in the subsurface conditions may not become evident until excavation is performed. If conditions encountered during construction appear different from those described in this report, we should be notified so that re-evaluation of the recommendations may be made. This report has been prepared for the exclusive use by our client for design purposes. We are not responsible for technical interpretations by others of our information.
