Speer, for the purpose of evaluating the on-site wastewater disposal and water supply systems serving the existing dwelling. The inspection was done at your request. This letter is our opinion of the suitability and compliance of the systems with local and State public health codes and accepted sanitary practices. A review of our office records indicates that the sewage disposal system consists of a 1250 gallon concrete septic tank and 1525 square feet of absorption trench area constructed in 1984. A copy of the individual sewage disposal permit is enclosed. It indicates that this department inspected and approved the construction of this system before it was placed in operation. A visual inspection of the premises indicates that the sewage system is apparently functioning satisfactorily at this time. However, we wish to emphasize that this letter is not to be interpreted as implying any warranty regarding this sewage disposal system. As a part of this inspection, the septic tank was pumped, receiving the maintenance required every two years by County regulation. Water to this residence is supplied from a well and community water system. Samples collected each month meet standards for coliform bacteria established in the Colorado Primary Drinking Water Regulations. The Colorado Department of Health performs an annual inspection which indicated that the system is in compliance with requirements for adequate treatment. The average percolation rate was 47 minutes to the inch and that portion of the lot where the proposed system is to be installed was relatively level. therefore, it is the conclusion of this L•epartment that a conventional septic task - absorption field cats be installed in compliance with the Pitkin bounty Indlvla,al Sewage Disposal Regulation. It is suggested that the absorption field be located to take advantage of the improved percolation of the gravel stratum located on the southeastern Port"5n of Lhe lot. Box 97 Edwards, Colorado 81632 Re: On-site Wastewater Disposal System Design for the Dance Lot described as A 1.09 Tract of Land in Section 34, Township 8 South, Range 86 West of the 6th P. M. (Lot 12, Block 1, Filing 1 Gateway to Snowmass Mesa Subdivision) Dear Mr. McNeil : We have completed our review of the engineering design for the referenced property which we received from Craig Dance on January 14, 1991. As you are aware, under Colorado State Law (C.R.S. 25-10-101 through 112) and the Pitkin County Regulations on •Individual Sewage Disposal Systems, the site is considered unsuitable for conventional sewage system designs due to the steep slope, the shallow, fractured shale bedrock and the lack of developed soils. Normal on-site sewage disposal techniques do not offer an acceptable solution for the construction of a septic system for the single-family house proposed for the property. The engineering alternative, as you have proposed in your design dated December 11, 1989, are generally acceptable. Based on this design, a permit for an on-site wastewater sewage system could be could be issued by this department. However, we would recommend several possible design changes or alternatives with the potential to improve the performance and system longevity.. These techniques include the following: 1) Using a dosing chamber to intermittently and sporadically load the sand filter. 2) Use narrower trenches to avoid deep cuts and backfilled areas (for example to use trenches, each perhaps 55 feet in length) 3) Utilize smaller diameter (1" to 1 1/2") Schedule 40 PVC water pipe with perforations of 1/8 to 1/4 -inch diameter spaced at distances of about three feet along the bottom of the bed or in each trench. The goal is to achieve a minimum operating head of two feet at the distal end of the distribution lateral lines of the absorption area. We refer you to Section 5-5 of the basic Pitkin County specifications. 4) The substitute underlying fill material is not specified, as by particle size distribution. We assume a fine sand or sandy loam is to be used. Either fill will provide an effective filter for adequate treatment of the septic tank effluent. 5 - 130 South Galena Street Aspen, Colorado 81611 303/9e0-6070 0 0 Dance Engineered on-site Sewage System Plan Review January 21, 1991 Page 2 This parcel should accommodate each of these suggested modifications in compliance with County regulations. Please let us know what you think of these design changes, once you have had time to consider them. We remind you that Section 3-8.4 requires you to certify in writing to this Department that construction and installation of the system has been completed in accordance with the terms of the sewage disposal permit and your design plans and specifications.
