I would also like to note that I have based the well setback on the State's calculation of design flow (1650 gpd) rather than Pitkin County flowrate. The State setback of 152' is more than adequate to ensure the well will be protected from contamination by the ISDS. Under separate cover, updated percolation testing results completed by HP Geotech will be provided. As stated in earlier project correspondence and the original design drawings, design percolation rates were recently verified during the initial construction of the system. The leachfield location was staked and partially excavated on site. Percolation test holes were located in each corner of the proposed field. The percolation results were favorable and we will be using a design percolation rate of 30 minutes per inch. The contractor is using Infiltrator "Quick 4 Standard" chambers, the design allows for 9.2 s.f. per chamber. Applying a 30% reduction factor for gravelless chambers, there will be 257 units required for the bed configuration. It is suggested that a bed consisting of 11 rows of 25 chambers be constructed (roughly 33' x 100', 275 units). Using the new perc data reduces the depth of the field, however, burying a bed that deep is unconventional and I would like assurance from the manufacturer that the technology will work at that depth. I will need the following... • New profile hole at least 4 feet below the depth of the installation to ensure groundwater or bedrock is not encountered. This department will need to be called to look at the profile hole. • Map from HP showing location of the new perc tests and more data about feasibility of the peres done prior to April 15. • Letter from Infiltrator confirming burial depth below 4 feet in a bed configuration will function properly. • A new as -built drawing and letter reflecting appropriate calculations and indicating depth of burial. HP is researching that boring. If neither of those work, we n have Aspen Earthmoving dig a profile hole outside of the the new bed footprint. HP will prepare a map showing the new perc test location (basically 4 corners of the proposed bed). The !!! temperature at the time of testing ranged from 36 to 37 degrees, adequate for perc testing. ✓lThe bed will be at an increased depth, however the grading above the bed will be adjusted to provide no more than the recommended cover (42" from bottom of bed) over the infiltrator units. Dear Mr. Eroncig' As requested by Crystal Barriscale of Barriscale Design Studio, Hepworth - Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc., perfotrned percolation testing at the subject site. We previously conducted a subsoil study for design of foundations at the site and presented our findings in a report dated January 23, 2002, Job No. 101 803. A profile pit and three shallow backhoe pits were excavated on May 23, 2002 at the The test holes (nominal 12 inch diameter by 12 inch deep) locations shown on Fig were band dug at the bottom of shallow backhoe pits and were soaked with water one day prior to testing. The subsoils exposed in the percolation holes are similar to those exposed in the Profile Pit and consist of about 1 foot of topsoil overlying medium stiff to stiff, sandy to very sandy clay and silt to the pit depth of 8 feet. No free water was observed in the pit and the soils were slightly moist. 1000: P. 02/05 Percolation testing was conducted on May 24. 2002, by a representative of Hepworth - Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. The percolation test results are surant ri7ed on Table 1 The percolation test results indicate an infiltration rate of 60 minutes per inch. Based on the subsurface conditions encountered and the percolation test results, the tested area should be suitable for a conventional infiltration septic disposal system. The project site is shown on Fig. 1. The purpose of the study was to develop recommendations for the foundation design. The study was conducted in accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to James J. Eroncig dated December 6, 2001. Interim findings of the subsoil study were presented in a letter dated January 9, 2002, Job No. 101803. A field exploration program consisting of exploratory borings was conducted to obtain information on subsurface conditions. Samples of the subsoils obtained during the field exploration were tested in the laboratory to determine their classification, compressibility or swell and other engineering characteristics. The results of the field exploration and laboratory testing were analyzed to develop recommendations for foundation types, depths and allowable pressures for the proposed building foundation. This report summarizes the data obtained during this study and presents our conclusions, design recommendations and other geotechnical engineering considerations based on the proposed construction and the subsoil conditions encountered. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION The proposed residence will be a one and two story wood frame structure over a partial basement/partial crawlspace. The attached garage and basement floors will be slab -on -grade. The remaining floor will be structural over the crawlspace. A tall single story wood frame barn with a dirt floor is proposed to the north of the proposed residence. Grading for the structures is assumed to be relatively minor with cut depths between about 4 to 12 feet. We assume relatively light foundation loadings, typical of the proposed type of construction. 33 H -P GEOTECH -2- 0 If building loadings, location or grading plans change significantly from those described above, we should be notified to re-evaluate the recommendations contained in this report. SITE CONDITIONS The site was vacant and covered with about 6 inches of snow at the time of our field work. An existing gravel pit is located to the southwest of the proposed building area. An existing irrigation ditch is located to the northeast of the proposed bam site. The ground surface slopes gently to moderately down to the southwest at grades up to about 6%. The terrain becomes steeper to the southwest of the building area at grades of about 20%. There is about 6 to 8 feet of elevation difference across the proposed residence footprint. Vegetation consists of grass and weeds. A few cobbles are exposed on the ground surface. FIELD EXPLORATION The field exploration for the project was conducted on January 4, 2002. Three exploratory borings were drilled at the locations shown on Fig. 1 to evaluate the subsurface conditions. The borings were advanced with 4 inch diameter continuous flight augers powered by a truck -mounted Longyear BK-51HD drill rig. The borings were logged by a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. Samples of the subsoils were taken with 13/8 inch and 2 inch I.D. spoon samplers. The samplers were driven into the subsoils at various depths with blows from a 140 pound hammer falling 30 inches. This test is similar to the standard penetration test described by ASTM Method D-1586. The penetration resistance values are an indication of the relative density or consistency of the subsoils. Depths at which the samples were taken and the penetration resistance values are shown on the Logs of Exploratory Borings, Fig. 2. The samples were returned to our laboratory for review by the project engineer and testing. H -P GEOTECH 3q 0 -3- SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS Graphic logs of the subsurface conditions encountered at the site are shown on Fig. 2. The subsoils consist of about '/2 foot of topsoil overlying stiff to very stiff sandy silty clay. Relatively dense, silty sand and gravel with subangular fragments of siltstone/sandstone up to cobble size was encountered beneath the clay at depths between 21h and 12 feet down to the maximum depth explored, 21 feet. Laboratory testing performed on samples obtained from the borings included natural moisture content, density, Atterberg limits and gradation analyses. Results of consolidation testing performed on relatively undisturbed drive samples of the clay and silty sand soils, presented on Figs. 4 and 5, generally indicate low compressibility under existing moisture conditions and loading and a minor expansion potential when wetted under a constant light surcharge. The sample from Boring 3 at 2'/2 feet showed no expansion and moderate compressibility upon increased loading after wetting. Results of a gradation analyses performed on small diameter drive samples (minus 1 V2 inch fraction) of the natural coarse granular soils are shown on Fig. 6. The laboratory testing is summarized in Table I. No free water was encountered in the borings at the time of drilling and the subsoils were slightly moist. DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS FOUNDATIONS Considering the subsoil conditions encountered in the exploratory borings and the nature of the proposed construction, we recommend the building be founded with spread footings bearing on the natural subsoils. I would also like to note that I have based the well setback on the State's calculation of design flow (1650 gpd) rather than Pitkin County flowrate. The State setback of 152' is more than adequate to ensure the well will be protected from contamination by the ISDS. I am lacking well water quality/quantity information that should be forthcoming within two weeks. I will forward that information to you once we have received it. Figure 1 shows the general location of the property and the approximate location of the Well. A pump test of Eroncig well was conducted on February 8, 2002 by Samuelson Pump Company utilizing an electric submersible pump and a generator. The well was pumped at a continuous rate of 16.5 gallons per minute (gpm) throughout the test. It was pumped continuously for a 4 hour period at this rate. The drawdown and time data collected during the test are presented in Table 1. We have plotted the results of the test in a drawdown vs. time curve as shown on the attached Figure 2. The maximum drawdown during the 4- hourtest was measured at 56.75 feet. The well displayed continuous drawdown with time. Projecting the drawdown rate, the well would be able to pump continuously for several days. At all times during the test the water level stayed well above the pump intake at 140 feet. Recovery data for the well following the pump test were collected for a 30 minute period after the pumping stopped. The recovery data are also summarized in Table 1. The recovery plotted as residual drawdown is shown in Figure 4. Based on the residual drawdown curve, the well displayed normal recovery characteristics. The pump test indicates thatwill probably be able to operate for extended periods at the rate of approximate yl�h12 gpm nd will be adequate to serve a single family residence. It is our under � g that the well will be used to serve a single family luxury lot with up to 14,250 square feet of outside irrigation. The proposed diversion and consumptive use estimates for the property are contained in Table 2. A water sample test will be collected Monday, February 11, 2002 and delivered to the Snowmass Sanitation District for independent analyses for bacteria.
