The fee for a ISDS application is $330 for a permit that takes 6 hours or tIFss for the department to approve. If approval takes
longer than 6 hours, a rate of $55 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time
of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the t(me of issuance of the ISDS permit; second, before
final approval of the ISDS permit. 1

RECOMMENDATIONS - We believe using the existing OWS can serve the proposed remodeled home.
The only change we recommend is to replace the existing "cleanout" to a location outside of the proposed
addition. We believe the tank capacity and field area are suitable for the proposed residence improvements.
Observation of the site indicates there is adequate room to add drain field area, if needed in the future.
If additional bedrooms in unfinished areas are anticipated, we recommend the OWS be constricted to serve
the additional loading. This OWS design will serve a four-bedroom residence between 2000 and 6000 SF.
For greater than four -bedrooms, the septic tank can be upsized 438 gallons for each additional bedroom.
Each additional bedroom would require an additional 335 SF of field or 27 gravelless chambers.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE - The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer
service, and must assume the responsibility for maintenance of the OWS. The system is relatively mainte-
nance free, but the owner must have the septic tanks pumped. We recommend the septic tank be pumped
and the effluent filter be cleaned or "hosed off' every two years. There are daily considerations, such as not
putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable material into the OWS. Water use must be monitored so toilets
are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet can consume in
excess of 1000 GPD. A loading of 1000 GPD could flood and irreparably harm the OWS.
We caution against installation of a water softener. The hydraulic loading from water softener backwash
may be detrimental to OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash, if a softener is
installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced into the OWS.
LIMITATIONS - An OWS design requires installation by a contractor who is experienced in its
installation. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If
subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should
be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to
this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS.
All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements,
septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to
the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of
the APEHD ISDS regulations and requirements.

As requested, we have evaluated the existing conditions at the site. The evaluation was done based on the
request that a design of an onsite wastewater system (OWS) be prepared for the residence, which is being
remodeled. As a result of our evaluation, the existing OWS appears to be adequate and the only thing that
need to be done is move the location of the "cleanout", where the sewer line exits the existing home.
SITE CONDITIONS - The lot is located in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, Colorado. There is an
existing 3 -bedroom residence, a well, two concrete septic tanks, and adjusted deep -gravel 1440 square feet
(SF) of absorption trenches as indicated on Figure 1. The drain field area has relatively gentle slope to the
southwest and has a good cover of native grasses. The existing system was permitted in 1986 under Permit
No. 86011. The components of the system were confirmed during site visits, including a visit with
Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department (APEHD) personnel. The observations pipes at the field
were monitored, and no evidence of effluent ponding was noted in the trenches.
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION — The existing residence will be renovated into a 3 -bedroom residence
having 2870 SF. The average sewage loading for a three-bedroom residence is 600 gallons per day (GPD)
using APEHD loading of 100 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75
is 1050 GPD.
This loading includes a dishwasher, garbage grinder, and washing machine. The residence is served by an
onsite well, which is located 200+ feet from the existing OWS.
Using the original percolation information from APEHD on May 13, 1986, 1007 SF of absorption area, and
1313 gallons of septic tank capacity is required. Presently the OWS has 1440 SF of absorption area and
2250 gallons of septic tank capacity, although the when the pumped volume is subtracted from the 1000
gallon pump chamber, the retention capacity is estimated to be 1750 gallons, which exceed the required
1313 gallons.
