We conducted this study according to Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations on Individual Sewage Disposal Systems on Monday, October 24, 1994. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. You should furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Proposed Construction: The new residence to be constructed on this property is to be a four bedroom, four and one-half bathroom, house of approximately 6500 square feet. Site Conditions The property is 6.535 acres in size. The drinking water is provided from an individual well to be drilled on the property. The building site is in lower Woody Creek on a bench above the Roaring Fork River. It is a flat site with a small irri ation ditch traversing the property on the east side as shown on the site plan. There is also a irrigation ditch takeou o the West of the building site at the toe of the slope and on the river. The parcel is bounded on the West by the Roaring Fork River that is one hundred feet from the building and septic system sites and approximately fifty feet lower. The ground surface that appears natural throughout the proposed area of the absorption field, slopes rather gently to the Northwest at less than a 5% grade. The vegetation consists of native grasses and weeds. P.O. No groundwater was encountered and bedrock was not present within eight feet of the surface of the ground. There were some gravels and cobble intermixed with the soil matrix from two feet down, with diameters ranging from two -inches closer to the surface to four feet in the deeper portions of the profile pit excavation. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were excavated before our arrival at the site. The subsoil in which the percolation testing was run, consisted of reddish silty sands and cobble rocks to a depth of fifty inches. These reddish brown and tan sands were well consolidated, and showed little tendency to swell. There was a considerable portion (over 50%) of fine soil material in the shallow percolation test holes. Percolation Testina: Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption area northeast of the building site. Three shallow holes were hand dug in the bottom of a backhoe excavation to a depth of approximately forty inches. The percolation holes had been excavated earlier. We pre-soaked the percolation test holes by adding water approximately six hours before beginning the percolation test and then keeping the bottom of the holes submerged. There was no water remaining in any of the percolation test holes after each of the initial presoaking periods. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table 1. These results indicate the silty sands have an average percolation rate of" 19 minutes per inch and are acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on-site se6 age system. 1. -1 Limitations: This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluation of our recommendations.
