Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System
Design for a Tract of Land in Lot 15, Section 9, Township 9 South, Range 85 West
of the 6th P.M., numbered as 0044 Doc Henry Road, Woody Creek, CO 81656
Dear Don,
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a
soils study and percolation tests to design a septic system for the proposed
residence on property owned by you. We conducted this study in accordance with
Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations on Individual Sewage Disposal Systems
on Tuesday, April 26, 1994. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface
conditions encountered. We will furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin
Environmental Health Department to obtain a permit to construct this individual
sewage system.
Existing and Proposed Construction:
There is a small existing log house already on the property. It is served by an
individual sewage disposal system, repaired in 1981 when the septic tank was
replaced with a new 1000 -gallon concrete tank.
The new residence to be constructed on this property is to be a two bedroom, two
bathroom, log house. There is an office in this house that will be considered
a third bedroom for purposes of the on-site sewage disposal system design.
Site Conditions:
The property is approximately 2 1/2 acres in size. The drinking water is
Provided from an individual well already drilled on the property.
The building site is in upper Woody Creek. It is a flat site with a large
irrigation ditch traversing the property as shown on the site plan.
The ground surface which appears natural throughout the proposed area of the
absorption field, slopes rather gently to the Northwest at less than a 5% grade.
The vegetation consists of sage brush and native grasses.
Subsurface Conditions:
A soil profile pit, adjacent to the proposed absorption area, was excavated to
a depth of approximately eight feet below the existing grade. No groundwater was
encountered and bedrock was not present within eight feet of the surface of the
ground. There was some gravels and cobble intermixed with the soil matrix from
two feet down, with diameters ranging from two -inches closer to the surface to
two feet in the deeper portions of the profile pit excavation.

The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test
procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were
excavated prior to our arrival at the site. The subsoil in which the percolation
testing was run, consisted of silty sands and cobble rocks to a depth of fifty-
seven inches. These reddish brown and tan sands were well consolidated, and
showed little tendency to swell. There was a considerable portion (over 50%) of
fine soil material in the shallow percolation test holes.
Percolation Testing:
Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption area northeast of
the building site. Three shallow holes were hand dug in the bottom of a backhoe
excavation to a depth of approximately fifty-five inches. The percolation holes
had been excavated earlier. We pre-soaked the percolation test holes by added
water approximately six hours before beginning the percolation test and keeping
the bottom of the holes submerged. There was no water remaining in any of the
percolation test holes after each of the initial presoaking periods.
The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results
indicate the silty sands have an average percolation rate of 7.6 minutes per inch
and are acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on-site sewage
system.
Limitations: This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted
practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The
conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data
obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some
Possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils
across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and
may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different
from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations
as soon as possible so we may reevaluation of our recommendations.

Dear Don,
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., has performed
a soils study and percolation testing for the design and construction of a septic
system for the proposed residence at the subject site. This letter details our
design recommendations.
Existing and Proposed Construction:
In our opinion, the site does not present any significant limitations to the
construction of an on-site sewage disposal system. The ground surface, which
appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field, slopes gently to
the Northwest at less than a 5% grade. There are several irrigation ditches
apparent on the property.
There is a small existing log house already on the property. It is served by an
individual sewage disposal system, repaired in 400! when the septic tank was
replaced with a .
The new residence to be constructed on this property is to be a two bedruom, two

a third bedroom for purposes of the on-site sewage disposal system design.
This site is in the Woody Creek area of the Roaring Fork River Valley several
hundred feet above and about 1/4 mile from the river and Woody Creek.
Minimum Pitkin County Requirements:
The oercoiation rates measured in the silty sand subsoils were measured at an
average of 6 minutes per inch.
The minimum Pitkin County requirements for the installation are based on a system
flow of 450 gallons per day. This flow would require a septic tank of 1000
gallons minimum volume, and a minimum of 645 square feet of standard absorption
bed, defined as follows:
A standard absorption bed is an excavation more than three -feet (3') wide
and containing a 4 -inch (4") perforated distribution pipe placed on six-
foot centers within the excavation. A minimum of six -inches (6") of 1/2
inch to 2 1/2 inch diameter gravel is placed under the distribution pipe
network. A sufficient amount of additional gravel is placed around and
over the distribution pipe and to bed and cover the pipe with a minimum of

two inches (2") of gravel.
Recommended On-site Wastewater Disposal Design:
You should consider the use of the "Infiltrator" graveless leaching chamber
system to construct the absorption area. Use of "Infiltrator" leaching chambers
permits a rYNanirubiw in standard absorption bed area under County regulations.
This reduction is based on manufacturer's claims and on an approval of such a
reduction by the Colorado Department of Health, water Quality Control Division,
and results in a minimum seepage bed size of 387 square feet.
Therefore, the suggested design incorporates the alternative listed above. We

It is required that the bed be excavated as shallow as possible, but to a depth OAC
of at least two feet below existing grade on the downhill edge. The bottom of the
bed must be level. Further, it is advisable to use a distribution box to
equalize the flow to each of the three lateral sections of leaching chamber
within the bed excavation. The distribution box would be placed between the
septic tank and the leaching chamber laterals and connected to the head end of
each forty-four foot section with a piece of solid PVC pipe.
The use of low water use toilets, flushing on 1.6 gallons or less, is also
recommended to reduce the wastewater flow to the system.
Particular care should be taken in crossing the irrigation ditch to ensure that
no water enters the effluent line from ditch seepage. A twenty foot section of
Schedule 40 PVC pipe should be used to traverse the ditch and at least one other
section of this pipe should extend back toward the tank and toward the bed area.
