The system was designed under our Job No. 15333W, dated October 15, 2002. The system includes the installation of a 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet, and two chamber -trenches with a concrete distribution box. Each trench had 1 row of 8 chambers, for a total of 16 chambers and 248 square feet of infiltrative area. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1. Jessie, with Aspen Earth Moving, was instructed to `bed' the four -inch PVC sewer pipe from the house to the tank to achieve proper support of the pipe, prior to backfill. The components of the OWS were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications. Sincerely, CHURCH & Associates, Inc. ,. rlt Timothy R. ENGINEERS & GEOLOGISTS October 15, 2002 Jack VlWilldeBuilders, Inc do Deanna Raso 20 Sunset Drive, Suite 3 Basalt, Colorado 81621 Subject: Subsurface Investigation and OWS Design, Proposed 2 -Bedroom Unit 909 White Star Drive, Pitkin County, Colorado Job No. 15333W Ms_ Raso, As requested, we investigated subsurface conditions and designed an onsite wastewater system (OWS) for the proposed 2 -bedroom unit. The investigation was performed on October 1, 2002. SITE CONDITIONS The property is in a residential area of Pitkin County, where OWS are required. There is an existing resi- dence served by an OWS presently. A 2 -bedroom unit is proposed north of the existing residence, which will utilize a separate OWS. The proposed drain field area for the 2 -bedroom unit has a 20% slope to the south and has a moderate cover of native grasses. The proposed structure will be served water by the local water district. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION Ec tpc,r✓` A9w beikeem uai with a living area of 995 square feet (SF), is proposed at the location presented on Figure 2. The OWS was sized based on 2 bedroom, which requires a 300 gallons per day (GPD) average loading using Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (PCEEiD) loading of 75 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 525 GPD. SUBSURFACE A subsurface investigation was performed by drilling four percolation holes, 13 to 27 inches deep, and one profile hole at the locations indicated on Figure 2. Subsurface materials in the profile hole consisted of 1.0 feet of topsoil, underlain by clayey sand to 3.0 feet, underlain by slightly sandy clay to 7 feet, underlain by clayey sand to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. No ground water was encountered. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 16 to 27 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate is 20 MPI. Percolation data is presented in Table 1. RECOMMENDATIONS The installation requires a septic tank and two chamber -trench drain fields at the location presented on Figure 2. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 300 GPD and a percolation rate of 20 MPI. The installation includes a 1000 -gallon, two-compartrnent, precast concrete septic tank with an DENVER 4501 Wadsworth Boulevard Wheat Ridge, CO 90033 303.463.9317 Fax: 303.463.9321 . Sub# Investigadon andOWS Design Job No. 15333W, 10-15-02 Z ($ I to C" Page 2 effluent filter at the outlet and two chamber -trenches. The trenches must have 1 row of 8 chambers for a total infiltrative area of 248 SF. A flow splitter basin or distribution box is required to distribute effluent. If gravity flow cannot be achieved from the septic tank to the drain field our office should be contacted for pump specifications. Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to minimize compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of the chambers. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix should be sown at the drain field to revegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbio- degradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIMITATIONS An OWS design must be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the change on the proposed OWS. If the health department modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of the PCEHD ISDS regulations and requirements. If there are questions, please call. The project engineer for this site is Tim Petz.
