Septic permit approved per compliance with the engineer design and specifications dated April 24, 2000 and
Clarification Letter dated May 4, 2000. Any changes must be approved by this department and the design
engineer prior to them being made. This department and the engineer design require that no work can be
done under this permit until ground water level is confirmed during the months of highest runoff and
ground saturation.
Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the Pitkin
County ISDS regulations. The engineer has stated that the setbacks from the irrigation ditches and well can be
reduced and contamination by the ISDS will be prevented.
The design is for one 2000 gallon two-compartment concrete tank with a pump in a biotube vault. There are 3
trenches with'14 gravelles chambers in each trench for a total of 93 chambers.
This department does not endorse any brand of products.
The engineer must do a final inspection of the installation and submit an as -built letter to this department. This
department must also be called for an inspection with a minimum of 48 hours advanced notice.

As requested, we have evaluated the possible installation of a washer and dryer, to be placed in a
proposed caretaker unit on the subject property. We understand the caretaker unit will be using the
existing onsite wastewater system (OWS) installed in the early 1980's.
The existing OWS is 1 197 square feet (SF), and is a 'standard' drain field with 4" PVC pipe and gravel.
The existing OWS was excavated in April, 2000 in two locations and appeared to be functioning
properly.
The loading of a laundry washer is 19.5 gallons/per/day per person. A two-bedroom residence would
bring the loading to 78 gals/day, The existing OWS (tanks and drain field) can handle the additional
loading from a laundry washer place in the caretaker unit. We are only evaluating the addition of a
laundry washer.

Hi,
I just spoke to Janet Schoberlein 923-2801 who lives in the Woody Creek area.
She wants to replace her current 4 bedroom home with a new one. Her isds was installed around
1980, she is not sure exactly. I told her we might have a permit, but could not guarantee it. She
wanted to do a perc test before April 15th, but I told her we wanted to wait until after that date
because of cold nights and days that might effect the test results.
She is not sure if she needs a new system or not. Her old one has been working fine according to
her. She has pumped the tank regularly.
Janet will be calling one of you (probably Nancy) to search for her old permit.

As requested, we observed the installation of the onsite wastewater system (OWS) for the subject site on
August 1, 2000. The system was designed under our Job No. 12220, dated April 24, 2000.
The system includes the installation of a 2000 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with
an effluent filter on the outlet, followed by a 1000 -gallon single -compartment precast concrete septic tank
with a pump. Three chamber -trenches were installed, as indicated on Figure 1. Each trench had one row
of 12 chambers, for a total infiltrative area of 558 square feet (SF). An as -built drawing is included as
Figure 1.
The pump and effluent filter were in place and wired at the time of our visit. The installation foreman, Jinx
Stone, may activate pumping system at his discretion. The components of the OWS were installed in con-
formance with our plans and specifications.

Dear Ms. MacKenzie,
This letter is to clarify errors in our OWS design for the subject site, dated April 24, 2000. The
percolation rate for the proposed OWS is 7 minutes per inch (MPI). The area that is required for a drain
field with a percolation rate of 7 MPI, four bedrooms, and a total square footage (SF) of 3500 SF, is 741
SF. Using a 301/6 reduction, we proposed three rows of I 1 chambers, for a total of 511.5 SF. All other
recommendations in our OWS design should be followed.

Dear Ms. Schoeberlein,
As requested, we have investigated subsurface conditions at the site and designed an onsite wastewater
system (OWS) for the proposed residence. Subsurface conditions were investigated April 18, 2000. Our
firm conducted a Soil and Foundation Investigation for the subject site, and is presented under a separate
letter.
SITE CONDITIONS
The site is in a rural residential area of Pitkin County, Colorado in the Woody Creek area. There is an
existing 2- s, on the southern portion of the lot that is utilizing an 1197 square
feet (SF) drain field. Due to the bunk beds, we are designating the cabin as based on three bedrooms.
According to Pitkin County regulations a three-bedroom residence having less than 2000 SF and a percola-
tion rate of 8 minutes per inch (MPI), requires 446 SF of drain field. The existing drain field, as indicated
on Figure I is 1197 SF in area and appears to be functioning properly. The drain field is presently exposed
for county inspection. The existing tank configuration is sufficient to serve the existing 3 -bedroom resi-
dence. The proposed drain field area has relatively no slope and a moderate cover of native grasses.
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
A four-bedroom residence with living area of between 2000 and 6000 square feet (SF) is proposed at the
location presented on Figure 1. We have sized the OWS based on four -bedrooms and 800 gallons per day
(GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department (APEHD) loading of 100 gallons per day per
person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 1400 GPD. This loading includes washing
machines and a garbage grinder.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
We performed a subsurface investigation by digging 4 percolation holes, 41 to 33 inches deep, and one
profile pit at the location indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions in Profile 1 consist of 6 inches of a
sandy root zone; underlain to 2.5 feet by sandy, silty clay; underlain to the maximum depth explored of 8
feet by silty sand with gravel and -14%e cobbles. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 5 to 10 MPI.
The average percolation rate is 9,W. . Percolation data is presented in Table I .

RECOMMENDATIONS
The OWS includes one septic tank with a pump, and three chamber -type drain fields installed at the
locations presented on Figure 1. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 800 GPD and a
percolation rate of 8 MPI. We recommend the installation of one 2000 -gallon, two-compartment concrete
septic tank with a pump in a biotube vault, as indicated on Figure 3. A pump is required due to elevation
differences between the tank and the drain field. The air field requires the installation of three chamber -
type trenches, each trench having one row f i2 chambers. distribution box is required to control effluent
flow to the fields. We recommend a design ftow rate o -gallons per minute and a total dynamic head of
18.9 feet. Pump details are presented on the pump curve.
Based on subsurface conditions, topographic positioning of the well and irrigation ditches, and the casing of
the well, we believe setback distances can be reduced. The setback distance from the irrigation ditches and
the well can be reduced to 50 feet and 100 feet respectively. The resultant flow from the drain field will be
away from the well and the irrigation ditches and contamination of these by the OWS will be prevented.
An eight -foot test pit is required during "spring runoff' and prior to OWS installation to confirm
ground water and soil conditions. The county and our firm must be contacted to observe the test pit.
Movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to prevent
compaction of the receiving soils. We recommend the bottom of the bed be scarified with a pick,
shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers.
We recommend the surface of the fields be seeded after installation of the fields. We recommend using a
native seed mix available at seed stores. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to
15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of
and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, we
recommend the septic tank be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applic-
able, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or
other nonbiodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized.
The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed
for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas
should not be introduced to the OWS.
LIMITATIONS
A contractor who is experienced in OWS installation should install the OWS design. Our investigation,
layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably
different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on
the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to
evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon
completion of the OWS

As requested, we investigated subsurface conditions utilizing test pits dug at the subject property on
February 22, 2000. The purpose of our investigation was to evaluate subsurface conditions at the bearing
level of the proposed residence.
The site is a 1.75 -acre parcel located in a rural -residential area in Woody Creek, Colorado. There is an
existing residence with a partial basement in the location of the proposed residence that will be demolished
prior to new construction. The proposed residence will be a 2 -story structure with a full basement and
wood frame construction. Relatively light loads are anticipated.
Two test pits were excavated using a rubber tire backhoe, as indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions
in Test Pit 1 (TP -1) consisted of 6 inches of topsoil, underlain by very silty clay to 4 feet, underlain by sand
with cobbles and gravel to the maximum depth explored of 9.5 feet. Subsurface conditions in TP -2
consisted of 6 inches of topsoil, underlain by very silty clay to 4 feet, underlain by sand with cobbles and
gravel to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet.
The results of laboratory testing are attached as Figures 2 through 4. The hand drive taken from TP -2 was a
sample of silty clay and exhibited a 2.6% consolidation wetted under a surcharge pressure of 1000 Pounds
Per Square Foot (PSF). The hand drive taken from TP -1 had a moisture content of 4.01/o. A bulk sample
was taken from TP -1 at 8 feet and had a fines content of 14 percent.
The results of our observations and laboratory testing indicate a spread footing foundation system is
appropriate. Spread footing supported by sand and cobbles should be designed for a maximum allowable
bearing pressure of 2500 PSF. Footings should bear on the native undisturbed sand and cobble, beneath the
silty clay zone, at minimum depths of 4 feet. Areas in which material is disturbed or where existing
foundations have been placed, must be excavated to native soils. The sand and cobble have nil expansion
potential. We believe four feet of frost protection is necessary. We recommend an exterior foundation drain
be installed around the basement foundation to discharge into a sump pit or to be daylighted away from the
residence. A detail of the subsurface drain is presented on Figure 5.
