Four cottonwoods and one spruce tree are being requested for removal. They are overcrowded, have been damaged by snow plows, a risk during fire or combination of the three. I have met with Parker Lathrop with the City of Aspen Fire Dept. and have attached an email correspondence outlining our discussion. In addition to these trees four aspen trees that are above code size are being requested for removal. These trees have been damaged by the feeding of elk in the past and more than 50% of the cambium tissue has been damaged. This damage has weakened these trees allowing cytospora canker to enter the trees through the damaged disuse. 1. 17" diameter cottonwood leaning over road and damage by snowplows. Tree is leaning over road and a concern for fire truck access in case of fire. 2. 10' diameter cottonwood tree leaning over road. Tree has a large wound encompassing approximately 30% of the trunk. Tree is a concern for fire truck access in case of fire. 3. 18" diameter cottonwood tree leaning over road. Tree is a concern for fire truck access in case of fire. 4. 12" diameter cottonwood tree leaning over road. The Gromis' are concerned about fire in the neighborhood because the house had burned down previously and because of the fires in California where they have their primary residence. You agreed that removal of the four cottonwoods that are closest to and leaning over the road would be beneficial to remove to reduce potential obstructions to fire crews if the trees were to fall. In addition to the four cottonwood trees there is a 10" diameter spruce tree on the south side of the property. This trees is growing between two other spruce trees and close to a furnace for the neighbors snow melt. With the tree being over crowded and close to the furnace we agreed that removal would benefit the remaining two spruce trees and also decrease fuels on the hillside below the house. I plan on submitting a tree removal permit with Pitkin County Community development for the removal of these trees and wanted to confirm our conversation for their records.
