WORK SESSION DATE: July 26, 2016
AGENDA ITEM TITLE: Midnight Mine Improvements
STAFF RESPONSIBLE: G.R. Fielding, County Engineer
ISSUE STATEMENT: Staff received direction to bring various improvements back to the BOCC for
consideration on Midnight Mine Road.
BACKGROUND:
On May 17th Staff presented a privately funded project to add pavement and drainage features to
Midnight Mine Road. The BOCC believed this project would affect the character of the area too greatly,
however, asked to see various safety improvements and a toned down project brought back for
consideration.
Staff would handle this project through an administrative permit for work in the right-of-way. The work
proposed would include:
• Drainage improvements
o The drainage improvements would be located on either side of the bridge and included
drop inlets and culverts to direct water towards Castle Creek. These improvements would
replace the ditches that are cut in 1-3 times a year. Additionally, trench drains would be
located at both ends of the bridge.
• Asphalt apron
o The apron would be constructed at the approaches to the bridge and extend about 100 feet
in each direction.
• Safety Improvements
o Site distance improvements would be made at the intersection of Castle Creek Road and
Midnight Mine Road by adjusting some grades adjacent to the roads.
LINK TO STRATEGIC PLAN:
• This item would address the responsibly maintained and enhanced County assets success factor
from the Core Focus Flourishing Natural and built environment.
KEY DISCUSSION ITEMS:
• Does the BOCC approve of this scaled down project?
BUDGETARY IMPACT: There would be no budgetary impact to the County at this time. The
County could save money on operations in the future.
RECOMMENDED BOCC ACTION: Direct Staff to begin the permitting process with the
resident proposing the work.
