The revisions are a based on a change in location for the drain field, dated May 17, 2002, under Job No. 14702W -A All previous designs should be discarded to avoid confusion. The subsurface investigation was performed on April 16, 2002. SITE CONDITIONS The property is in a rural residential area of Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has an 8% slope to the southwest and a moderate cover of native grasses, sagebrush, and scrub oak. The residence will be served by a well located 202+ feet from the proposed drain field. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION A residence with an attached guesthouse having a totalf five bedroormg and a living area greater than 6000 square feet (SF) is proposed at the location presented 2. The OWS was sized based on 5 bedrooms and 1300 gallons per day (GPD) using Pitldn County Environmental Health Department (PCEHD) loading of 130 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 2275 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and garbage grinders. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS A subsurface investigation was performed by drilling nine percolation holes, 33.75 to 38.5 inches deep, and two profile holes at the locations indicated on Figure 2. Subsurface materials in Profile Hole 2 consisted of gravelly sand to the maximum depth explored of 10 feet. No ground water was encountered. Percolation tests performed in the area of Profile Hole 2, indicate percolation rates of 6 to 13 minutes per inch (MPI) with an average rate of 10 MPI. Percolation data is presented in Table 1. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 1300 GPD and a percolation rate of 10 MPI. The installation must include one 2000 -gallon, single -compartment, precast concrete septic tank followed by one 1250 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent pump in a Biotube® pump vault and two chamber -beds. Bed `A' must have 3 rows of 11 chambers each and bed `B' must have 4 rows of 8 chambers each for a total of 65 chambers and 1007.5 SF of infiltrative area. A 1.25 -inch PVC lateral must be suspended within chambers with 3/16 -inch holes on 5 -foot centers facing upward, every fifth hole should face down. An automatic distributing valve is required to distribute effluent to the trenches. A pump with a total flow rate of 42.1 Gallons Per Mmute (GPM) and a Total Dynamic Head (TDH) of 37.8 feet is required to pump effluent to the field. The pump should be set to dose 150 gallons per cycle. Pump specifications are included as Figure 5. Based on our design utilizing pressure distribution and the evaluation of risk of contamination of surface water and ground water, it is not necessary to add eight feet additional distance for each 100 gallons of wastewater per day of design flow over 1000 gallons per day, as specified in the table to prevent contamination. A 50 -foot separation between the proposed absorption area, surface water or ground water is appropriate to prevent contamination. Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to minimize compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix should be sown at the drain field to revegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbio- degradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmU to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIMITATIONS An OWS design should be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the change on the proposed OWS. If the health department modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS.
