Dear Mr. Herman: As requested, we performed percolation testing at the subject site for design of an infiltration septic disposal system. Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. previously performed a subsoil study at the residence for the proposed additions, reporting our findings under Job No. 196 506, dated September 11, 1997. An on-site Infiltration septic system, located to the south across Little Woody Creek Road, is planned for the new construction. One profile pit and three percolation test holes (P-1, P-2 and P-3) located as shown Fig. 1 were excavated with a backhoe by the client on October 8, 1997. The subsoils exposed in the Profile Pit consisted of about I 1 feet of topsoil overlying silty sand and gravel with scattered cobbles and occasional small boulders extending to the pit depth of 10 feet. No free water was encountered in the Profile Pit. Test holes about 12 inches in diameter and 12 inches deep, had been hand dug in the bottom of the backhoe pits and soaked by the client. The subsoils in the percolation holes were similar to the Profile Pit. Percolation testing was performed the following day, October 9, 1997, by a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. The test results, presented in Table I, indicate an percolation rates of from 15 to 20 minutes per inch for the natural granular soils with an average percolation rate of about 18 minutes per inch. The percolation rate was based on the last two interval readings. Based on the subsurface information and percolation test results, a conventional infiltration system based in the natural granular soils should be feasible at the site. I Will go ahead and issue a septic permit based on the percolation rate of 10 mpi which was used on the 1983 permit and forward the building plans to the appropriate department. Later this spring, the owners will be responsible for obtaining a new percolation test and profile hole excavation in the area of the existing leach field. Once I have received the percolation report, I will adjust the septic permit to reflect the 'report's finding, if necessary. Please keep in mind that it is possible that a design by an engineer may be required if the percolation report indicates a perc rate that is faster than 5 mpi or if groundwater or bedrock are found within 4 feet of the bottom of the leach field's bed.
