If approval takes longer than 6 hours, a rate of $55 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit; second, before final approval of the ISDS permit. The system was designed under our Job No. 11686, last revised June 24, 2004. The system includes the installation of 2000 -gallon, single -compartment, concrete septic tank followed by a 1250 -gallon, two-compartment, concrete septic tank with a pump in a Biotube® pump vault at the main residence and a 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, plastic septic tank at the barn. A gravelless chamber - trench drain field was installed in seven trenches, each with one row of 11 chambers for a total of 77 chambers and 1193.5 ft2 of infiltrative area. A concrete distribution box with a baffle was installed to distribute effluent to the drain field. The 2 -inch pumped sewer line from the main residence to the distribution box had not been installed as of the latest site visit. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1. The components of the OWS design were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications. Final electrical connections must be made by a licensed electrician. The revisions are based on the addition of a bam and regulations changes allowing for a larger drain field reduction for gravelless chambers in a trench configuration from our original design, dated November 9, 1999 under Job No. 11686. All previous designs should be discarded to avoid confusion. The subsurface investigation was performed on November 2, 1999. SITE CONDITIONS The lot is in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, Colorado. The proposed drain field area has a slope of 10% to the northeast. There is a heavy cover of native grass and scrub oak at the proposed field. Water is provided to the site by a well, located 175+ feet east of the proposed drain field area. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION A five -bedroom residence with a living area greater than 6000 ft2 and a bam with a toilet and a sink are proposed at the locations indicated on Figure 1. The OWS design is based on 5 bedrooms, 1 toilet, 1 sink and an average daily loading of 1330 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (PCEHD) loading of 130 gallons per day per person per bedroom, 25 GPD per toilet, and 5 GPD per sink. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 232This loading in- cludes washing machines and garbage grinders. vv If additional bedrooms in unfinished areas are possible, it is suggested that the OWS be constructed to handle the additional loading. The installation of a properly engineered OWS to serve future build -out can be cost effective. SUBSURFACE The subsurface investigation was performed by digging four percolation holes, 24 to 36 inches deep, and one profile pit at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 15 to 40 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate is 26 MPI. Percolation data is presented in Table 1. RECOMMENDATIONS The installation must include three septic tanks, an effluent filter, an effluent pump, and a gravelless chamber -trench drain field at the locations presented on Figure 2. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 1330 GPD and a percolation rate of 26 MPI. The installation must include a 2000 -gallon, single -compartment, concrete septic tank followed by a 1250 -gallon, single - compartment, concrete septic tank with a Biotube® pump vault on the outlet at the main residence and a 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet at the barn. Pump specifications for the main residence are included as Figure 6. If can gravity flow from the septic tank at the barn to the distribution box cannot be attained, our office should be contacted for pump specifications. Seven chamber -trenches must be installed, each with one row of 11 chambers for a total of 77 chambers and 1193.5 ft2 of infiltrative area. The trenches may be modified to conform to topography and to preserve as much vegetation as possible. A concrete distribution box is required to distribute effluent to the field. Based on..soit conditions`, elevation difference and evaluation of risk of contamination of surface water and ground water, it is not necessary to add 8 feet additional distance for each 100 gallons of wastewater�er c�av of desljgn flow over 1000 gallons per day as specs 1 1n a table to prevent contamination The 175 -foot separation between the proposed absorption area and the well to the east is appropriate to prevent contamination,--- Movement ontamination.__Movement over the drain field trench during construction should be kept at a minimum to minimize compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of each trench must be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers. The surface of the drain field should be seeded after installation of the system. A native seed mix from the area available at seed stores should be used. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the field. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service and must assume the responsi- bility for maintenance of the OWS. The system is relatively maintenance free, but the owner must have the septic tanks pumped. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped and the effluent filter cleaned every two years. There are daily considerations, such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable material into the OWS. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a tanning toilet can consume in excess of 1000 GPD. A loading of 1000 GPD could flood and irreparably harm the OWS. The loading from the backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. Hi • . Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health depart- ment modifies this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. All construction is to be in accordance with PCEHD ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations.
