We conducted this study in accordance with Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations on Individual Sewage Disposal Systems. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. Please furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at your earliest convenience to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Proposed Construction: The residence is to be a three bedroom, three and 1/2 bathroom house with a detached studio/workshop. There may be a future caretaker unit added to the workshop building. Site Conditions: The property is approximately 5 acres in size. The drinking water is to be provided from the subdivision water system. The building site is on a lot located behind the W\J Ranch in Woody Creek. About 50%,of the lot is covered with oak brush, sagebrush and grasses. The lower part of the lot is irrigated hay field. The ground surface of the upper and lower benches, which appear natural throughout the proposed area of building and within the site of the absorption field, slopes to the Southwest at a 20% grade. This slope rises about 60 feet above the driveway area in this area, and is about 400 feet in depth. There are several irrigation ditches in the area. Some of these are proposed to be rerouted and lined. The cutting and filling of the rudimentary access drive has begun. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile pit, within the proposed seepage pit absorption area, was excavated to a depth of approximately ten feet. The profile excavation was done about twenty feet above the access road. No groundwater was encountered and bedrock was not present within eighteen feet of the surface of the ground. There 7 P.O. The top five feet of the excavation was primarily a clay which exhibited smearing and compaction from the earthmoving equipment. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedure at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test hole was excavated by hand in the bottom of the profile pit. The subsoil in which the percolation testing was run, consisted of sandy clay and gravel. These sandy clays were well consolidated, and showed little tendency to swell. Percolation Testing: Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench area southwest of the building site. The shallow hole was hand dug in the bottom of a backhoe excavation to a depth of approximately 137 inches. We pre-soaked the percolation test hole by adding water approximately four hours before beginning the percolation test. There was no water remaining in the percolation test hole after each of the initial presoaking periods. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the sandy clay subsoil has a percolation rate of 16 minutes per inch at a depth of approximately 10 feet. This soil is considered acceptable for a conventional infiltration seepage pit design for the on-site sewage system. Limitations: This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may reevaluation of our recommendations. If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the office. Sincerely, A;, Robert F.
