The subsurface investigation was performed April 14, 2004. SITE CONDITIONS The property is located in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has an approximate 3% slope to the south and a Rill cover of native grasses Water will be provided to the site by an onsite well located 100+ feet from the proposed drain field. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION 04 J`� ' (/ A barn having 5 horse stalls, 2 sinks, 1 toilet, and 1 washing machine is proposed at the location presented on Figure 1. The OWS was sized using Pitkin County Environmental Health pepartment (PCEHD) loading of 50 gallons per day (GPD) per horse stall, 5 GPD per sink, 25 GPVper toilet, and 20 GPD per washing machine. The average loading is 305 GPD with a peak loading of.53 GPD using a peaking factor of 1.75. If additional horse stalls and/or fixtures in unfinished areas are possible, it is suggested that the OWS be constructed to handle the additional loading. The installation of a properly engineered OWS to serve future build -out can be cost effective. SUBSURFACE A subsurface investigation was performed by digging three percolation holes, 30 to 36 inches deep and one profile pit at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface materials in the profile pit consisted of 11 feet of slightly gravelly, clayey sand, underlain by cobbles and small boulders in a clayey sand matrix to the maximum depth explored of 12 feet. Ground water was not encountered. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates ranging from 18 to 32 minutes per inch (MPI). The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 305 GPD and a percolation rate of 26 MPI. The installation includes one 1000 -gallon, two-compartment, concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet and two chamber -trenches, each with 1 row of 9 chambers for a total of 18 chambers and 279 ftz of infiltrative area A flow splitter basin, or equivalent, is required to distribute effluent to the fields. Vehicle movement over the trench area during construction should be kept at a minimum to reduce compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of chambers. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. A native seed mix should be sown at the trench area to revegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years or more frequently if needed. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping or as needed. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other non -biodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized to reduce the frequency of pumping. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet can use in excess of 1000 GPD. An additional 1000 GPD loading may flood and irreparably harm the system. We caution against the installation of a water softener. The hydraulic loading from the backwash of a water softener is detrimental to an OWS and a separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. No landscaping or plastic can be used over the field, which will reduce performance of the field. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. The design of the OWS is based on the treatment of domestic sewage only. No industrial or hazardous wastes should be introduced into the OWS. LEW]CATIONS A contractor who is experienced in OWS installation should install the OWS. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evahrate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion ofthe OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations.
