Gentlemen:
As requested, we performed percolation tests at the Miller Residence in Pitkin
County, Colorado. This letter presents the results of our tests.
We performed percolation testing on May 13, 1996 in percolation holes
prepared and saturated by the owner on May 12, 1996. Test results are presented
on the attached Figures 1 through 3. We recommend a design percolation rate of
30 min/inch.
The percolation rate determined for Hole No. P-3 is inaccurate due to large
cobble encountered. We recommend the excavation for the new percolation field
be inspected to confirm that suitable soils are exposed.

Dear Betsey,
I am writing this letter to accompany our leach field expansion application and
survey for our proposed Caretaker Unit located at the above address. There are still a
few possible variables with the design. The most important is the expansion of the
leach field itself. This design assumes good perk tests in the area we plan to expand
into. We should have perk test results within the nest two weeks.
After talking to our excavator, Durais Excavation of Carbondale, it was
suggested that we tap into the existing leach field on the opposite side of the existing
point of entry. He pointed out that when he replaces saturated leach fields that
invariably the saturation is worst closest to the point of entry and best on the opposite
side of the field. Tapping into the opposite side of the leach field would even out the
saturation and would also makes back flow into the existing tanks not an issue.
We have drawn in a grinder pump outside the Caretaker Unit garage to get the
waste up to the septic tank. If ground water is low enough the excavator thought it
would be possible to have a gravity feed line (1/4" per foot drop) to the tank.

NOTES:
I. Exploratory boring was drilled on May 19, 1987 with 4 -inch diameter continuous
flight power auger. Existing backhoe pit was excavated by others prior to our
field work.
2. Locations of exploratory boring and backhoe pit were determined by pacing from
the building corners which were staked in the field.
3. Elevations of exploratory boring and backhoe pit were measured by instrument
level and refer to the Bench Mark on Pig. 1.
4. The lines between materials shown on the exploratory boring log represents the
approximate boundaries between material types and transitions may be gradual.

not become evident until excavation is performed. If during
construction, fill, soil, rock or water conditions appear to be
different from those described herein, this office should be
advised at once so reevaluation of the recommendations may be
made. We recommend on-site observation of excavations and foun-
dation bearing strata by a representative of the soil engineer.
