P.02 6th _ Ltd qzo :5'1 7 Subject: Individual Sewage System Design for the Wise Residence - to be located on Lot R-14, Starwood Subdivision, Pitkin County, Colorado Dear Mike: As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., has performed a soils study and percolation testing for the design and construction of a septic system for the proposed residence at the subject site. This letter details our design recommendations. Proposed Construction and Building ite-. The planned main residence is a relatively large multi-level house with a total of four bedrooms and six baths in the house. The property is to be served by the treated water supply fumished by the subdivision. The site is a lot in the Starwood Subdivision below and to the West of North Starwood Drive. The lot is 3.929 acres. Grasses and weeds cover the lower portion of the meadow on this lot. Oak brush covers the hillside above the eastern -most ditch and in small clumps lower on the lot. The ground surface in the area of the proposed septic system appears natural and undisturbed. The ground surface slopes to the West -Northwest at a grades of approximately 15% to 25%. There are three irrigation ditches traversing the lot. The area below the lowest and most westerly of these ditches was, for the most part, saturated this Summer from water seeping from the leaks in the ditch system. We understand that all of the irrigation ditches are to be lined through the property to control this problem. Minimum Pitkin County Re irements: The percolation rates measured in the fine sandy clay subsoils were measured at an average of 60 minutes per inch. The minimum Pitkin County requirements for this installation are based on a system flow of 600 gallons per day. This flow would require a septic tank of 1250 gallons minimum volume, and a minimum of 2960 square feet of standard absorption trench, defined as follows: P.O. A minimum of six -inches (6") of 1/2 inch to 2 1/2 inch diameter gravel is placed under the distribution pipe. A sufficient amount of additional gravel is placed around and over the distribution pipe and to bed and cover the pipe with a minimum of two inches (2") of gravel. A minimum of two trenches is required for any such installation. Recommended On-site Wastewater Disposal Design: We recommend that the sewage system consist of a 1250 -gallon concrete septic tank, a pumping chamber of 1000 gallons, and an absorption field of five trenches as shown on Figure 1. A trench configuration was selected, although it is important to eliminate any difference in static head between trenches placed on a hillside and required to be separated by a minimum of six feet. The use of "Infiltrator"Tm leaching chambers, or the like, permits a 50% reduction in absorption area under the County's current regulations. This reduction is based on manufacturer's claims and on an approval of such a reduction by the Colorado Department of Health, Water Quality Control Division. This type of construction would, therefore, require 1500 square feet of shallow trench excavation_ Each trench is to be three feet wide, one hundred feet in length, and approximately three feet in depth at the low side of each trench. The trenches are then constructed by placing sixteen sections of Infiltrator in each of the leveled excavations. The suggested design incorporates the alternative leaching chamber system detailed above. The septic tank effluent is pumped to 2" distribution pipe suspended in the crown through the sections of leaching chamber, as shown on the manufacturer's specifications. To balance the flow the distribution pipe is drilled with 7/16" holes placed at varying separations for each lateral. Distribution pipes are capped, drilled with a hole in the end cap, and placed with the holes up. Two of the holes, however should point down to drain the distribution pipe between doses, and prevent freezing. The exact pressure distribution network of the manifold, distribution pipes, and perforation spacing will be worked out with an engineer to account for the differences in head and flow to each of the trenches. 10-24-1994 01:43PM FROM THC Cabinet 0 Wise Residence Sewage Disposal System Design October 12, 1994 Page 3 Ito] E 9205197 P.04 A three-inch manifold from the pump is directly connected to the distribution lines of the leaching chambers sloped to drain back to the dosing chamber. It is estimated that a pump capable of delivering a flow of 70 gallons per minute against a head of 17.5 feet. The exact head of the delivery system should be determined by establishing the elevation difference from the pump intake to the effluent lines. We have attached suggested details for the sewage system design. We also continue to recommend that the irrigation ditches above and below the absorption site area be lined at any points within fifty feet of the absorption field site to eliminate all chance that the septic system would impact the flow of irrigation water through the area. Proposed Construction: The planned main residence is a relatively large multi-level house with a total of four bedrooms and six baths in the house. Site Conditions: The property is to be served by the treated water supply furnished by the subdivision. The site is a lot in the Starwood Subdivision below and to the West of North Starwood Drive. The lot is 3.929 acres. Grasses and weeds cover the lower portion of the meadow on this lot. Oak brush covers the hillside above the eastern -most ditch and in small clumps lower on the lot. The ground surface in the area of the proposed septic system appears natural and undisturbed. The ground surface slopes to the West -Northwest at a grades of approximately 15% to 25%. There are three irrigation ditches traversing the lot. The area below the lowest and most westerly of these ditches was, for the most part, saturated this Summer from water seeping from the leaks in the ditch system. P.O. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile pit was excavated at the upper percolation test site location during the initial phases of construction in conjunction with this investigation. It was inspected in September. The profile pit was approximately 20 feet Northeast of the proposed septic system absorption area. It revealed that the soils on this portion of the lot are a shallow silty loam topsoil overlaying a clayey sand loam and then a sandy clay to a depth of eight feet. The soils were somewhat moist, and there was some smearing and compaction caused by the excavating equipment. Bedrock was not encountered and there was no evidence of a water table within the profile excavation. The upper site percolation test site was located on a convex ridge to the Southwest of the staked building site. These soils consisted of twenty-three inches of silty loam overlaying eleven inches of sandy clay. These shallow holes were dry when dug and remained dry when checked after the ditches began to flow during the Summer. The second site reviewed for the septic system absorption field has been eliminated from consideration. This site is in the meadow and its visibility and difficulty of access has prompted the Starwood Homeowners Association to request that it not be used. Further, it presented problems in preparing test . holes and establishing a percolation rate. Several percolation test holes were dug in this proposed absorption field location. Most filled with seepage water when dug to a depth of between six and thirty-six inches, and could not be used to measure the percolation rate. Percolation Testin The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate locations shown on Figure 1. In the upper group of percolation tests, the subsoil consisted of loam and a sandy clay which extended to the depth of percolation test holes between thirty-two and thirty-six inches. The percolation holes were pre-soaked the morning of testing, eight hours before the percolation test was begun. After the initial fillings, water was continuously added approximately every two hours for the immediate period before beginning the percolation test. A total of twenty gallons was added to each test hole during the presoaking period. There was some water remaining in the percolation test hole when the measurements were begun. These results indicate the sandy clay soils located in the area of the proposed absorption field had a percolation rate of 60 minutes per inch and would be acceptable for a conventional infiltration design for the on-site sewage system. Limitations: The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation. If further excavation reveals conditions different from those described, additional evaluations may be necessary.
