The results are moisture testing is attached. The results of observa- tions indicate the OWS is operating adequately. At the May, 1997 visit, there was water leaking from the collector ditch which flowed onto the drip irrigation field. There had been settlement of soil at several distribution lines. Remedial measures were discussed and have been implemented. Rocks larger than 6 inches were removed and low areas were filled. Four samples were obtained from the drip irrigation field area. The results of the soil moisture testing and saturation of the soil is presented on TABLE I. If there are any questions, please call. E. 0. CHURCH, INC Edward 0. The purpose of our observation was to confirm Che repair was installed in conformance with our design dated November 15, 1996. The entire 7200 SF was installed, which would allow abandonment of the original trenches, but the original trenches was also retained. Access to the drip irritation field was "teed" from the pump line 17 feet.south of the lift station. Two 2 inch ball valves were installed to allow access to either the new field or the original trenches. Two irrigation boxes were installed with five distribution outlets of two inch ball valves. The drip -irrigation trenches were installed in the general conformance with the design. The length of the two south- ern section, Sections 4 and 5 were changed from 100 to 80 feet which resulted in 15 rather than 12 lines as indicated on the attached Fig. 1. The area of the drip irrigation field is 7200 SF in 3600 lineal feet of 2 inch drip irrigation line. Two items remain which are: 1, extending of the 24 inch culvert to beyond the 7_imit of the drip irrigation field in the ditch above the field, and 2. final grading to smooth the Surface of the field. We understand the final two items will be done before July of 1997. If there are E. 0. CHURCH, Edward 0. 3 copies sent h`"a4•• please call. a0 0. C'•_c' N 1 .F. Base line soils data would be obtained at OWS construction. The test- ing would include moisture and density of the native soil. A minimum of 5 soil moisture samples would be obtained and tested dur- ing May of each year. One sample must be from a drip irrigation sec- tion which is open and one may be from the section which is closed. The three remaining samples would be randomly obtained from trench areas based on a random number generator system. The samples would be obtained from a depth of 12 to 30 inches using a JMC BACKSAVER SOIL SAMPLER or AMS SOIL RECOVERY PROBE. Based on the soil moisture test- ing a report indicating: 1. location of tests, 2. moisture/density and 3. percent saturation will be reported. If the percent saturation exceeds 90% in two of the three samples and there is no evidence of surfacing, additional samples will be obtained in August. Any evi- dence of surfacing would first require closing of that section of the field and monitoring. if there are any questions, please call. E. O. CHURCH, INC. Edward 0. I 130 SOUTH GALENA STREET • ASPEN, COLORADO 81611-1975 • PHONE 970.920.5070 • FAx 970.920.5197 Printed on Recycled Paper Dear Mr. Habermann, Per telephone conversations with you and Nancy MacKenzie of the Pitkin Countv Health Department, we are providing this letter to clarify conditions. The three question include: 1. a statement of whether there is an odor for the drip irrigation system, 2. whether a filter will be required at the pump, and 3. defining of wet conditions for installation. Per a request from the Starwood Homeowner's Association with respect to odor, there should be no odor different from a typical operating septic system. Any noticeable odor would be at the time the septic tank is pumped and should only be for an hour. No ongoing odor should be noted. Because there was an existing pump system, we did not require the installation of a screen filter at the pump. Apparently the Pitkin County resolution requires the installation of the screen filter. We recommend the installation of an Orenco ES 1548 Effluent Screen. The screen can be installed when the new two inch service line is install- ed to the drip irrigation field. We recommend the installation of a 4 foot section of Orenco Riser above the screen filter and the exist- ing risers be installed at the first tank. Ms. MacKenzie asked whether the drip irrigation could be installed at this time because of her concern about "wet" conditions of the soil. Based on the conditions found at the time of the percolation tests last week, the wet soil was confined to the upper 3 to 6 inches of soil in the field area. We believe the drip irrigation field can be installed yet this fall. If there is snow, snow should not be mixed with soil to backfill the trenches. With installation of drip lines in trenches, the trenches will only be open for short periods of time and should not create a problem. If the weather forecast indicates snow, only limited amounts of trench should be opened. It is our understanding the owner, Mr. Wise, has decided to install the entire 7200 square feet of drip irrigation field. We recommend the existing trenches remain connected to the system and used when there is limited occupancy of the residence or on a backup basis. 925 East 17th Avenue • Denver, Colorado 80218-1407 P.O. CHURCH, INC. -ENGINEERS & GEOLOGISTS November 11, 1996 TODD HABERMANN CONSTRUCTION P.O. BOX 1210 Basalt, CO 81621 Subject: Repair Onsite Wastewater Lot 14R, Starwood 0269 North Starwood Drive Pitkin County, Colorado Job No. 8052 Dear Mr. Habermann, System Design As requested, we have observed subsurface conditions in test pits, performed percolation tests, and reviewed subsurface data and the Onsite Wastewater System (OWS) recommendations by Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., (Nelson) dated October 11 and 12, 1994 and as -built plans. The purpose of our review was to evaluate subsur- face conditions and to design a repair OWS. SITE CONDITIONS - The lot is an approximate 4 acre lot in a rural area of Pitkin County, Colorado. The location of the existing residence, profile pits and percolation tests are presented on Fig. 1. The slope at the proposed field area is 15% to 26% to the west\southwest. The ground surface has a moderate cover of native grasses and sparse cover of scrub oak. The site is not in a confined drainage area and has moderate to good solar and wind exposure. EXISTING CONSTRUCTION - A 4 bedroom residence exists as indicated on Figs. 1 and 2. The OWS for the residence is sized based on the struc- ture having greater than 5000 square feet (SF), actual 7000 SF. The sewage loading for a 5000+ SF 4 bedroom dwelling is 1040 gallons per day (GPD), based on 2 people per bedroom and 130 GPD per person. The design loading includes a garbage grinder, dish washer and washing machine. Water is provided by public water service. Discharge from any water softener, spa or pool should not be directed to the OWS. The Individual Sewage Disposal System (ISDS) permit for the house was issued 11-1-94 and the permit was finaled by Pitkin County 12-6-95. We understand the house was occupied in December, 1995. The existing drain field consists of 7 trenches of 12 infiltrator chambers with an area of 1.484 SF, which is equivalent to 2968 SF of gravel drain field. EXPERIMENTAL DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM - The proposed drip irrigation OWS has been authorized as an experimental OWS in Pitkin County. As a part of the authorization, there will be conditions of the permit which are not typical of a permit in Pitkin County. The conditions include: 1. the applicant must commit to follow recommendations of the department and the design engineer, 2. a backup system design is required, 3. monitoring of soil saturation will be required and must be reported 925 East 17th Avenue • Denver, Colorado 80218-1407 P.O. Box 2869 • Evergreen, uotoraao bU4J/-?.bby (303) 832-9692 FAX (303) 832-3517 (303) 674-0660 FAX (303) 674-0813 r 2 for 5 years, an annual report of the soil moisture will be required for 5 years, 5. the site must be reviewed for solar and wind exposure to wind, 6. the Department will allow design without a 1.5 peaking factor, and 7. you or your installer will be required to post a bond for the installation of the system, with release of the bond with approval of the installation by the Department, the design engineer, and the provision of an as -built drawing. The primary condition which will affect you is having a bond posted for installation. With respect to the remaining conditions: 1. you must agree to the terms of the permit; 2. a backup design is a sand ETA design in the same area; 3. monitoring as described later in this letter will be required which will include an annual report as described in Item 4; 4. the site has been reviewed as described under Site Conditions and found suitable for installation of a drip irrigation OWS; 5. the Department will allow the construction of the OWS without a 1.5 peaking factor; and 6. requires the bonding of the installation cost. Another drip irriga- tion system has been installed in Pitkin County, so we r!o not expect any problems with installation or performance of the OWS. Two other drip irrigation systems have been designed with one installed this fall and it is anticipated the second will be installed next summer. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS - Subsurface conditions were investigated by ex- cavating 2 test pits at the locations indicated on Fig. 1. Subsurface conditions consist of 1 foot of dark gray silty topsoil underlain to 2.5 to 5 feet by stiff grayish brown sandy clay underlain by reddish brown clay to depths of 6 to 9 feet. No free water was encountered nor was observed 1 day after excavation in the profile pits. Percola- tion rates ranged from 60 to 120 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate of 90 MPI. A summary of subsurface data is presented as TABLE I. RECOMMENDATIONS'- The repair drip irrigation field is proposed to the north-northwest of residence as indicated on Fig. 2. The drip irriga- tion field will be accessed through the two existing septic tanks with a pump in the second chamber of the second tank. The first existing septic tank is a 1500 gallon single compartment precast concrete sep- tic tank and the second is a 1000 gallon two compartment concrete tank. There is 2100 gallons of septic tank capacity in the existing tanks. The septic tanks and pump from the original installation meet 1996 Pitkin County septic tank regulations. The drip irrigation field area is based on 1040 GPD loading for a 4 bedroom home, 32 inches of lake evaporation per year based on the US Department of Commerce Weather Bureau Technical Paper No. 37, and at- tached water balance design, Fig. 2. The area of field required is 7,200 SF, as presented on Figs. 3 and 4. We recommend the field be installed in five sections with three sections of 1600 SF and two sec- tion of 1200 SF as indicated on Fig. 3. With the three 1600 SF sec- tions, there would be two manifolds of 8 lines in 4 trenches. With the two 1200 SF sections, there would be two manifolds of 6 lines in 3 trenches. The final drip irrigation field configuration can be modi- fied to fit the topography with approval of our office. The trenches should be backfilled to reestablish the original slope. An alternative utilizing the existing trenches is possible. The exist- ing trencher would be credited as 1200 SF of field, resulting in the 3 requirement of 6000 SF of drip irrigation field. The drip irrigation field would be installed in two 1600 SF sections and two 1400 SF sect- ions as indicated on Figs. 5 and 6. Based on the performance of the existing trenches, they may not recover and additional drip irrigation field may be needed. Two additional valves should be installed to allow installation of sections of drip irrigation field. With the five sections of drip irrigation field, we recommend the operation of the OWS with 4 of the 5 sections at any time. The fifth section can be allowed to "rest". The resting section should be switched annually. If the owner is anticipating finishing of additional bedrooms in un- finished areas or additions, we recommend the OWS be constructed to handle the additional loading. The installation of a properly sized OWS to serve future buildout can be cost effective. The existing sep- tic tank configuration will serve up to a 4 bedroom residence of 5000 SF. For greater than 4 bedrooms, the septic tank must be upsized to 500 gallons per bedroom. Each additional bedroom larger than 4 bed- rooms would require an additional 1800 SF of drip irrigation field. We recommend the surface of the evapotranspiration and absorption (ETA) field be seeded after installation of the system. A good native grass cover will promote evapotranspiration (E -T). We recommend a pasture seed mix available at seed stores. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the field. The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must assume the responsibility for maintenance of the sys- tem. The system is relatively maintenance free, but the owner must have the septic tanks pumped. We recommend the tank be pumped every 2 years. There are daily considerations, such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable material into the system. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, a running toilet will consume in excess of 1000 gallons per day if allowed to run. An excess 1000 GPD loading could flood and irreparably harm the field. We caution against installation of a water softener. The hydraulic loading from the backwash of a water softener can be detrimental to OWS and a separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a water softener is installed. No landscaping or plastic can be used over the field, which will reduce evapotranspiration from the field. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced into the OWS. As a part of the Permit, there will be conditions imposed by the Pit- kin County Health Department. One condition which will be different from normal installations will be the requirement for bonding of the installation of the drip irrigation system. This is required because of prior poor experiences in Pitkin County with experimental systems. A drip irrigation system was installed in Pitkin County and there have not problems with the installation. Seven of the eight conditions will have been met with completion of the installation and only an annual reporting of soil moisture conditions and performance of the system 1 4 e will be required. We anticipate the annual reporting requirement -for 5 years and is estimated to cost $125.00 per year. If the drip irriga- tion OWS performs as the existing system has, we would apply to have the monitoring period reduced to 3 years. LIMITATIONS - An drip irrigation design requires installation by a contractor who is an experienced installer. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should evaluate the effect of the changes on the proposed OWS. If modifications to this design are made by governing Health Departments, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of o S design. p0 RE(, If there are any _ l7tl' ease call. Drip Irrigation Onsite Wastewater Soil Moisture Testing 0169 North Starwood Drive Lot 14R, Starwood Pitkin County, Colorado Job No. 6720 Dear Mr. Habermann, f.Op i,, `'r: r: 1jjr ` r_;.•fir .1': 19 S's'Ln•t We have visited the lot several times in May 7; dune 11 and 16; and July 18, 1997 to observe the drip irrigation field, and to obtain the soil moisture samples as required by the Pitkin County OWS permit. If there are any questions, please call. i E. 0. CHURCH,, INC;16';x, Edward 0. Churcix,., P. E.
